Topic by nomotog, Forground building - almost same idea. Topic by VovArK, homes in Diablo - completely same idea. In two words: My Idea, while you not in house/cave, and they don't have openings, background layer of walls just copies as foreground and hides interior of caves and houses. It always was strange for me when I played Terraria, that you can see what happens inside the building, while you're outside. I think it will be good idea just to close it with "outer" wall, while you're outside, or if room doesn't have door and completely solid. That's what we always seen in Terraria no matter where we were: It's what you will see when the room completely solid or you not in house: Or if it has window, you will see windows on the "outer" side too. This will decide Tiy how it will work, but I suppose this is still called solid, because water wouldn't exit from there, thus it will be affected by the Fog of War and internals of the room will be hidded from eye, until you breach the wall. I think, overall it will make exploration part of the game more interesting and exciting, as well as it will hide activity and secrets of your house from other people. Or another alternative is to make darkness thick enough and make for light impossible to penetrate 1-block thick walls, then no foreground layer will be needed, because light and darkness will do its job.
Well, I believe it's confirmed that you can place blocks in either the foreground, or the background. So if we utilize that system, this is quite possible. Just make the foreground walls transparent once you pass through the doorway or other entrance, and it should be easy enough. However, I don't really know how their mechanics work yet, but I imagine it would be very possible. It's also a great idea, just for immersion's sake. You see a building on what you thought was a deserted planet. You debate going inside; it might be a trap. Might be filled with hostiles. You shouldn't be able to see inside.
This. This I really like. I've got no idea how difficult it would be to do, but I like it. Having any kind of buildable 'wall' have both a back-side and a front-side (which would only be visible when you're outside the structure) would add a whole new element of mystery to exploring ancient ruins and the like. Maybe it could be as simple as having it be that whenever you're within walls, all walls on the world disappear?
I've commented on this matter of Field of View/Fog of War on some threads, I'd love to see FoV implemented ingame! It would make adventuring throughout unknown cave systems something so much more challenging that it woukd normally be! This would make digging a wall to reach another chamber more intense and would allow to mess with more lightning underground without giving away their position to the player! Falling in a hole on the ground would become scarier, since you have no idea what might be lurking on the surface waiting to strike as you climb your way out! Exploring abandoned temples or bases would give a much more immersive atmosphere, since each room may hold a deadly trap or a incredible reward! Screw casual gaming, I want to have a real challenge!
This would not only place a player in a challenging situation, but it would probably encourage the community to come up with interesting and smart (or extremely crazy) ways of dealing with this situation. If one don't want to be so careful and just mine away a hellevato to rush through the game... Well good luck on that, you may mine your way to a chamber full of magma and die.
YES! I didn' see that at first, but YES!!!! Like in Minecraft, the number one rule of mining is "never dig straight down." Terraria was based around digging straight down. However, if this were to happen, lava would have to flow much, MUCH more slowly, or someone digging normally could suddenly find him/herself being rushed by lava flowing two or three times as fast as it actually does... like in Terraria. This would allow the poor sucker to get out of the way.
Luckily Starbound will have much more hazards to make players worry about. Never dig straight down in a magma chamber area, never dig up in a oil rich soil, never use bombs and loud tools near a poptop's nest. That is, if you want to play safe. I like this aspect in games: allow you to be careful and make a safe approach in situations or just go insane for a extra amount of danger.
Mmm... I think on late stages of game, when you will have Super Power Ultra Mega Armor 9000 you will be able to allow yourself to use bombs and loud tools near poptop's nest, swim in magma and take a bath in oil... But I also think that newly discovered worlds on this stage of game will be much more dangerous then poptops trowing at you oil rich soil with magma
The devs promised that threat level 100 worlds will alway be challenging, no matter your gear. So you shouldn't worry about getting too strong and being able rush through end game worlds like its some walk in the park. I just wonder... If one is strong enough that the armor even allow the user to swim on lava and whatnot, what creature could be a challenge to that player. Hopefully some pretty cool creatures with awesome attack patterns not just a cheap mob that shoot nukes in all directions and has a million health.
It probably goes back to being hidden once you no longer have direct line of sight. That said, once you leave the room, it should go back to being cloaked.
Not really "Fog of war", but I do agree that buildings should prevent you from seeing exactly what's inside before entering... especially something like any generated buildings as well. Something I'd build for my house, I wouldn't really care. But otherwise, it'd be neat.
