We've all learned by now how much of a pain in the ass it is to dig a man-height walking tunnel underground. What I feel we need: 1. Allow us to dig a 2 wide 4 high area at a time. This is eight blocks compared to the default nine, so it's a minor tradeoff in resource gathering efficiency in exchange for MASSIVELY easier tunnel digging. 2. Allow us to mine individual blocks faster. It's a bit jarring that digging out a 3x3square takes exactly as long as removing a single brick from the side of a wall. 3. Some sort of highlight to show us which blocks we're going to affect when we start clicking, because late-tier pickaxes can destroy some softer blocks in one hit.
+1 All these seem like a really good idea. We could hold shift to go into 2x4 mining mode. It's not like we need the run speed anyway...
+1 i also hate how if i concentrate and hit only one rock by holding shift it takes just as long as it would to break 9 blocks. pretty stupid since you're focusing on one rock rather than multiple. And yeah i've broken chests and decorations by accident while aiming at blocks of wood
I'd rather they make it so that you can crouchwalk 3-height passages, and maybe even crawl 2-height passages, with appropriate movement penalties to each.
Definitely agree that mining speed should be relative to the number of blocks you're hitting at a time. If they just did that, OP's first suggestion wouldn't be such an issue, and personally I like the 3 x 3 grid because you end up with more irregular tunnels when you dig through softer material quickly.
