Title, I'm wondering what the general consensus of the community is on the implants currently in the game. Do you guys like them as is, or would you rather they be removed, replaced with something else, or expanded upon?

I'm keeping my opinion out of the OP for now to not influence opinion one way or the other. This thread is gather public opinion and is not a complaint thread.

Well, for me it's a good idea at the basis but it has evolved in a bad idea. The idea of implants for surviving in certain environments is good, but when you don't have them, you can feel yourself restricted. And I don't really like the idea of "okay you have the heat protection implant so now you're immune to cold, airless environments, heat and radioactivity". It's really too overpowered for me.

I think that each implant must protect against one thing, and that's all. The O2 Implant for airless environments, the radioactivity implant only for radioactivity, etc...
I think it could reinforce the survival aspect of the game, and it would seem more logical to me.

    Otherwise, it's a good idea.

implants? like the air, radioactive, cold, and fire protection? if so, i rather like them as is, the progressive upgrades remind me alot of metroid powersuit upgrades. it was rather cumbersome when you could only pick one at a time.

Okay, that makes sense to me.

I pretty much agree with this honestly.

To me its like "Oh you have the heat implant? As a reward, be lazy and forget about all environments with it". I don't see how protection from heat can protect from radioactive biomes or arctic conditions.

I'm not really sure how i feel about them. On one hand, like everyone said, it's really metroid-esque, and gives a sense of steady progression. On the other hand however, they are currently nothing but a way to block a player's progress, in a "You need X item to get here, get out." sort of way. I personally think environmental hazards should be avoidable without the implants (i.e : Stay underground on cold planets, Radioactive planets steadily irradiate you and when you're fully irradiated, back to the ship you go, etc.) but keeping the implants allows you to ignore fully these hazards, therefore keeping a sense of progress when you get them.

Sorta unrelated, but what if the "implant" slot allowed you to pick other techs than "Immune to X" ? Like "Natural running speed +10%" or "Super slow self regeneration" ?

Overall, implants have a crapload of potential, i'm sure the devs will improve them in the future.

Okay, that's true, but don't you feel it's a little tedious just to click one button to change heat/cold/whatever and then you're good? I mean, there's no real choice involved with it. You just pick cold for cold environments and hot for hot environments. Maybe they could have implants that offer small bonuses in addition to what they protect against? Like the radiation anti-gravity implant that makes you slightly lighter while also protecting you from radiation. Have something similar for heat and cold etc.

Well they have things like rocket boots, robots and health regeneration. I think more things like them would be good, rather than making the implants un logical.

    Just my opinion.

Maybe, what do you mean by not logical though? I think it's just about as logical as being able to travel faster than the speed of light. Maybe the implant transforms part of you into an energy or wave form temporarily which doesn't have mass to make you lighter.

By simply adding the heat protection to the other protections? There is also the whole issue with the O2 implant being nearly useless because it wouldn't be able to be used to explore for the most part.

    Nearly useless?

As soon as you unlock the next implant it is useless.

I like implants along with the star types, as they replace sectors (one sector is enough). The fact that they take up a Tech slot is pretty annoying

We could still make something like: all implants protects against airless environments in addition to what they're protecting you in the first place. So the heat/cold/radioactivity protection implant would protect you against the heat/cold/radioactivity and would also allow you to breathe in water, or to explore moons and asteroid fields.

And thus you wouldn't be restricted in your exploration of the universe, what do you think ?

It would be useless anyways because it is only used to explore underwater and to explore airless worlds, so, if it were mutually exclusive with the rest, it would still be useless because it's effect isn't as useful as protection against an effect that appears in a whole planet and can't be avoided.

Its mostly a holdover from the way they worked before. They could use a rename to be more fitting to their intended use.

    The implants themselves I like.

The only thing I don´t actually like is the simplification (compared to reality) that was made witrh regards to stars and environments
(that is, the star being the determining factor on whether all planets in the system are hot, cold or radioactive).

Also I dislike that the star type is the main determining factor on the type of planets that can appear in a system.

I would love to see something more realistic ...
with inner planets being hot and/or radioactive (with variations ... think of Venus ... where a lot of hotness comes from the atmosphere ... or some worlds that are per default radioactive)
and outer planets being cold (with a possible temperature variation between dayx and night ... especially for worlds without an atmosphere).

IMHO they should combine what I just said (i.e. keeping the environment system but making it more realistic), with some kind of "difficulty level" per planet or system (similarly to the difficulty system they had before)

I'm against full protection from anything. Hazards should feel hazardous, and protection should never be absolute. Making implants where every time you kill an enemy it refills specific decreasing hazard protections would make for a more intense survival experience. This is a fun game, but I always feel disappointed in how it doesn't seem to progressively get harder as the planet tiers rise. Even in the old heat system, as flawed as that was, at least you felt a tinge of fear as you progressed to the next hazardous environment. That accompanied by a hunger mechanic made it so you were always taking a risk by venturing too far underground as well. If you were lucky and smart the risk would pay off in more, new resources that would unlock new parts of the game. Without progressively more challenges it just feels like I'm playing Mario on world one over and over.

I guess if you just want to relax and build stuff the new hazards and the implant system is better for that.
