I'm Against Unlimited Oxygen <<<Devs please consider before 1.0

    it would be better if your ship could work on oil too but that it would be less effective, and that you have to craft oxeygen tanks and a oxeygen generator,

    5-10 minutes might not be enough to be able to dig far enough below a moon's surface to extract enough Erchius Fuel to fill their ships, but if oxygen-replenishing consumables are included (as what King Kitteh proposed), and can be crafted before having to leave their solar system (like, say, requiring an Iron Workbench and a couple Steel Bars per consumable), then players should have little problems collecting it if they stock up on said consumables. Players can also opt to purchase Erchius Fuel from the Outpost.

    Are you talking about the one from the moonbase or the one from ocean planets?

    Because if you play Nightly you now need to wear the moonbase pack to have oxygen, no air bubble tech anymore. I assume they'll do the same to the scuba tank, they might have already actually.

    Sounds really interesting, but if the devs don't do it, we can make a mod. And since this sounds really cool, I would like to see it in a mod because adding this in 1.0 could slow them down. The sooner 1.0 is released, the sooner we can work on mods for it.

    Limiting oxygen now shouldn't take much effort for them, but more importantly if it is to be in vanilla, it should be done now and not after 1.0, because it would drastically change the feel of the game and would likely confuse some new non-beta players.

    Thanks for everyones ideas! Consumable oxygen tanks would likely be one good solution to this. Otherwise, I also like the idea of building structures that emit oxygen to a room or radius. If you like these ideas, please bug a dev to chime in here. I'm interested in what they think.

    The best solution from my point of view would be if our air as a whole was way more in-depth. To be exact:
    • Atmosphere is a thing.
    • We have limited air supply once we get the tech or proper items.
    • We can upgrade that somehow and / or use additional items / armour sets (oxygen tank backpacks, space suit, etc) to get more capacity.
    • We can carry spare oxygen tanks in our inventory to be used as a consumable that refills certain amount, but also leaves empty tank to be later recharged at a station (think of this as different kind of food).
    • The above would give us classic choice of "do I take more oxygen or leave more space for loot".
    • Since mods already did this - the ability to build enclosed structures with different air inside or air at all (airless worlds). This would need some new items to produce and maintain atmosphere, as well as a working system of creating airlocks.
    • The above makes it possible to create dungeons with unbreathable air on regular planets or vice versa.
    • With all this, it would also be possible to introduce the temperature back, and make buildings / rooms actually heated. Building bases on frozen worlds woo.

    Possibly have an air purifier mask that you would use on some planets with a non breathable atmosphere (but still an atmosphere, not airless) that could give more efficient breathing time by carrieng filters. which have a longer life than air refills, (this is optoinal) but come back dirty, so you have to craft them with water and other stuff to clean them. Also be more expensive to make and refill than air capsules.

    What about being able to turn water into oxygen on the go? Or perhaps at a station. Actually you could make it so the capsule crafting recipe requires water.

    Sounds like micromanagement, needing to worry about air filters on top of O2 and everything else.

    Not really. It can simply be a lower tier of breathing devices. Or at least could be if the 3rd place we go to was not a freakin' moon.

    Either way, it really doesn't have to be a complicated mechanic. Helmets past certain tier would simply be capable of using filters and / or air canisters. That would grant players with either more efficient (per consumable) breathing time on worlds with toxic air (filters) and / or less efficient breathing everywhere, including airless worlds and underwater (air canisters).

    Either consumable could be made renewable by allowing to replenish canisters and clean filters with water (simplified version).

    As a bonus, even if we made filters be a low tier breathing devices, that still doesn't exclude going to the moon. Erchius Mining Facility mission could simply be altered to allow easier gathering of full space suit (which would have to be pointed out as an objective), which in turn could (as a set) provide extended breathing period at a cost of combat protection. Perfect solution for moon exploration.

    i'm not sure i'm totally on board with another obstacle to exploration, but it sounds like enough people could be that they could make the feature and then have it as an option that can be toggled on and off when starting a new character (like...well crap, i can't find it now, but like hunger and hardcore modes will be).

    Yeah, that would be totally acceptable. Have we heard from any moderators or developers? I'd love to hear their opinions on it.
