So, I'm here looting stuff out of random NPC's homes, and stealing the roof over their heads! And I mean this litterally, I am pulling out my pick and stealing their roofs because some of these tribes have homes that look cool to me. Their chests are full of stuff I could use or need (I leave a lot of stuff until I can sell things, I'm sure that is a feature coming soon). And their decorations? All sorts of cool things I just want on my own planet. I see guards, and the residents seem to get flustered (and this may just be me noticing things that happen in coincidence, but still) - and NO ONE IS STOPPING ME!!! I know it is hard to flag "ownership" of an object, item and much more, a tile in an area. But it just breaks a bit of immersion for me to be able to steal everything I want from these poor aliens around the cosmos - and no one will stop me! I think a simple tag/flag/variable (whichever method seems desirable) to flag ownership of a tile/object would be awesome, then alert NPCs in an area that the item/tile/storage has been taken. I'd hate to have a village after me, but if I steal the graves of their fallen - I deserve it!
I must admit, NPCs will get angry at theft but don't react hostile yet. This might be on purpose by the devs because a ownership system with NPCs would be difficult to implement without problems. What happens if you start a village after all... it would be complete chaos if you swap homes of NPCs and move decorations and etc. I would hope that the only means of ownership that the devs implement will be only for the premade towns and stuff, and even then it shouldn't go too far to be too complex.
There working on setting blocks unbrakable till you distroy a dungen totem of some sort.... so means they can do it and probly will.... just need time
I know. I am an aspiring developer. a simple bool statement (isTileNeutral) can be added to all the in game tiles and if it is part of a town (not player created), then it can be set to no, and any guards or NPCs near it can turn hostile. I just found it a bit comical that I can in fact take anything I want, with little to no consequences (I accidentally took out a home of Avians because I stole their roof, and a few birds had fun with that, but I don't think that was purely my fault...).
the problem though is finding some way of setting LoS .... that is not easy.... can the gaurds see you taking stuff? Can they see you braking things? and how do people react to there houses being torn up? do they rebuild or just sulk about it
This has been planned since they started discussing npc villages. You needn't worry about it. The real question is is it possible to steal stuff without getting caught?
This is a thought I had after seeing Let's Play videos where people just walk into a town and take everything not nailed down...and then everything else, plus the nails...all the while the NPCs issuing declarations of eternal friendship. It just felt wrong. More than that, though, it makes towns too helpful. The LPers I watched could walk in empty-handed, and walk out with a full inventory. It's a total Monty Haul, and with no risk or consequences, you're only hurting yourself by not looting.
As a Floran, very rarely I see declarations of friendship. I don't think anything I do will change what they say about me. Why not get something out of it. On the flip side an Avian told me Avian chicks dig a Floran accent so, I guess I have that going for me.
There's a problem that the only place to get some of those blocks and decorations is from pilfering them from those friendly NPCs, I don't want to murder a village of fellow Avian so I can take a chair to run through my 3D scanner to use for my base. I'd also hate it to be a do or don't situation because that removes a lot of freedom of base building and decoration, if they make NPCs and guards get mad and attack you for breaking apart the town then also add the blueprints for the items to a merchant. That way folk who don't care about the NPCs can murder the town and break it apart (or attempt some sneaky thievery) and those of us who'd rather keep our neutral friends alive can still get the items we'd like.
To add to this, since we do have "3D Printers" - Furniture vendors! These carpenters, masons and everything else can sell some of the blocks and items we cannot make ourselves (for whatever reason), and therefore, we can buy them instead of stealing them - Especially helpful for a completionist or someone who likes the look, but doesn't want to take out a town or guard or two. This will solve the problem of not being able to obtain items without "stealing and killing." We can also barter for them (I can't wait for the ability to sell items comes in, most of my new characters have hoards of items, and nothing to do but throw them in a random storage unit.... Hopefully we will see selling items in a beta soon?)
I have a suggestion for this, which im going to post right now in another topic, linking to this one. Done, i made it, here it is: http://community.playstarbound.com/...pcs-defend-their-home-from-thieves-you.54887/
