So far quest haven't been implemented yet, but I thought we'd discuss the kinds of quest we'd like to see.

I'm not above fetch quest but those can get very boring, very fast. Killing a certain amount of mobs would also be boring. So, I had some idea for quest types that I could be taking for the various games I've played in my lifetime.

Wouldn't it be neat if their were raids on NPC villages, and after protecting them an NPC would appear(walk up) with a 'quest complete' indicator? Another quest idea could be a group of Apex scientists wanting you to scan the entirely of the surface of an entire planet. The size/threat of the planet would affect the level of the quest reward.

Anyone else have any other interesting quest idea? Would kind of rewards would you like from quest? How do you think quest should be distributed? Discuss.

    Where's the 'Eat shoe' option?

I don't have any interesting quest ideas but I hope most quests aren't boring.

Hmm... I think it would be cool if quests were tied to structures. Maybe one of the villagers insists a nearby abandoned temple is haunted and demands you go clear it out, or someone tells you X miniboss has been terrorizing the town and you have to track it down in its lair.

Well I think quests might just entail a little more than e.g.
    - Do X for X
    - Kill X number of X
    - Take X to X in X
    ect...

I think our devs are clever enough to integrate something a little more dynamic while also having quests just like the above, I was thinking something like this:

A shifty looking (racenamehere) approaches you, holding a strange object in his/her hand. They or it asks you to transport said strange looking object to wherever promising great rewards if you are successful, emphasis on successful. Having this object under your watchful possession is going to bring you a lot of trouble, space battles involving individuals of (racenamehere) searching for the object (maybe it has some kind of locator in it? maybe it is a locator itself!) follows a whole bunch of side-quests and options; do you even want to do this? Do you throw it out or do you choose to unravel the mystery of this object for yourself? It is going to be a long ride if that is so.
That's what I was thinking, probably not very concise. I'm not great at explaining things.

I read somewhere that the quest were going to be procedually generally, so I'm afraid of a lot of them being "Find X number of X item" It would be pretty easy to implement quest as such.

This is the exact kind of quest that I want in this game; Something that doesn't feel plopped onto a planet, but part of the planet itself.

So instead of walking to the other side of a village with a shoe, we'd be walking around the entire planet, correct?

I like your other idea, though :)

You explained it very well with your quest prompt. A quest like this would be amazing. Even if they had a very epic quest, something on this scale should be implemented. Would add lots of excitement to exploration. Imagine that staying on a single planet for too long would signal the organization that's looking for you to beam down. You would have to stay on your toes. Great quest idea.

Hahahah. I'm the guy who actually gets a kick from walking the entire surfaces of planets. Sometimes, I just slay all the mobs while running right until I get back to my spawn.

There's a serious issue missing from the poll, is this villagers daughter hot? If she is I have a chance at some loving, if not then there better be some money in it. Either way I will probably still do it as the completionist in me won't allow me to leave it alone.

There could also be exploration-style missions. They give you some coordinates and tell you to scout out the conditions. The more information you can bring back (IE the more mobs you kills, ores you mine, etc on the planet), the higher the reward.

The villagers daughter is an adopted Floran savage who is disgusting and probably doesn't even deserve the holey shoe.

As a completionist myself, the quality of the quests is important to me. As, I'm probably going to spend a lot of time questing for the sake of completion and roleplaying.
That's a perfect expansion of the idea. This would make completely exploring giant planets more interesting. Incentive always makes things more fun.

  11. How about quests that actually reflect the results after completing them? For instance, if you get a village a stack of Iron Helmets, all guards end up wearing them. :p

That is why I don't like mmos my actions never really change anything. Because you go back the area is the same and some other person is doing that quest.

Luckily in solo player and even on servers, once a quest is done... it's done. I feel some quest should have time limitations, while others actually influence the quest planet. Or OHGOSH, imagine providing a large number of solarium rods for the Apex... However, when you turn it in, you discover that the energy source is for a powerful laser cannon and they completely obliterate one planet.

    Oh oh oh!

Some sort of "go to these coordinates to find the super secret [temple|server room|sewage dump|etc]" on a planet. The best part, in my eyes, is that this thing is no where on the surface of the planet, but indicators of it's direction might be. Or... indicators to indicators to indicators... (and so on) until you find the arrow that points straight at it.

Or even something like finding a missing human damsel(or male) buried deep in a mine by a cave in. You would have to scour the planet and find her based on the hints in the quest prompt. Then you would have to escort her back to the surface.

I feel that having indicators pointing to a quest goal destroy the point of exploration. It's a 2D-map so it's not nearly as big as it could be and I feel hints would provide a less obtrusive way to perform "Find the hidden X" style quest. Unless one of the quest givers gives you an item that is only meant to detect, lets say, a renegade Glitch you're suppose to find and annihilate.

You misunderstood my post. I mentioned quest that could change the world around you. I'm not talking about MMO quest systems as that has no place in this discussion.

Quests could be so much more than fetch quests or kill x number of y in this game. Here's a few examples I just thought up:

There's a village that needs a well dug. Dig them a well 4 tiles wide by 200 tiles down (or until you find water).

There's a diplomat that needs transportation to the planet Whateveryawant. Take her there and help her find the Hylotl settlement.

A lava flow is set to reach this village in 5 minutes. Divert the lava or the town will be destroyed.

There's a meteor headed to this planet. Beam down, get up to it, and mine away the entire thing within 15 minutes or the village (and reward-giving NPCs) will be destroyed.

A village has been destroyed because a lazy Glitch couldn't be bothered to divert a simple lava flow or destroy a meteor. Use these blueprints to rebuild it.

The crops have all been destroyed by an early frost. Plant 30 tiles of wheat for a nearby village.

The village needs to be prepared for a monster invasion. Find weapons and armor for the villagers and help them fight off 20 waves of enemies. The stronger gear you find or craft, the better the villagers do and the easier the quest will be.

Your ship's fuel converter has blown up due to a tribble infestation. You're stuck on this planet until you find a replacement part. (This world would have a dungeon with the necessary piece in it).

Those are just off the top of my head. I hope the devs listen to some of the original ideas from the community here, because procedurally-generated fetch-quests could ruin the potential of this game.

Yeah, I get that hints could ruin it - that's why I'd prefer the "trail" version more, so you don't find the ONE thing then just go right to the end.

But some sort of indicator I feel is a must - I totally disagree that planets are small enough to scour for such a relatively small object - it may be small, but unless you drill down in the relative area on a giant planet... you'll be searching a long time. Especially if you barely miss it, then start searching the wrong direction!

So while arrows might not be ideal, some sort of indicator would be great - perhaps unique to the type of quest. One could be based on some sort of in-planet coordinate system yet to be devised, one could simply be "go to the fortress on the planet - you can't miss it, it's on the surface," and another could be "find the miniboss and kill it for a map" (and the map could be a 1handed item that gives you an arrow or something, /shrug).
