So the NPCs would fight too, if the enemy boarded on my ship? I have only my doctor with me.

[IMG] I might need to rethink his gear then.

now what i had in mind at all that would be boring .-.

i want like a ship facing me and i can only see them from my ship maybe possibly fly above or below them (dooubt id be able to fly behind them effectlivly unless could use my thruster to cause damage)

Yeah that's pretty much how I imagine how the first iteration will be. Definitely hoping it's not the last iteration though. :/

When a person dies, they get respawned with all their gear intact; just a little shorter on pixels.

That said, I think this is a logical conclusion for ship-to-ship combat:

When a ship gets defeated, it gets rebuilt with all its structure intact; just a little shorter on fuel. (You don't lose any of your fueling "items", just the fuel itself.) Naturally, you also suffer the pixel loss that comes with character death, since you're on the ship when it goes. Or the character could automatically eject in an escape pod to prevent this.

But then why would you ever have more fuel than is absolutely necessary? They would need to change the fuel mechanics a bit to make this penalty effective.

True; just a thought I had.

True, perhaps classes of ships will be added, but when we have large ships and crew you don't fly like that, you move in to position and fire weapons, board etc. Would suit the turn based + real time strategy style.

Who knows what the grand scheme for ships are, I just want upgrades :D

You're ignoring the potential of boarding battles >_> It's not boring at all since unlike FTL this would all be done from a side scrolling perspective

It seems to get messy when you try to add ship combat into the game. For example if they can board you and are too powerful and you die you either have to lose your ship or be spawn camped, probably with out any items if you play on the new difficulty setting to drop everything on death.

You can, as some mentioned, have your ship be lost on death and though it would make bases more useful with is great, it would make ship upgrades useless. I think a perfect game, if they could pull it out, would let me build and bookmark bases on many planets, not just a free teleport to 1 as well as let me enlarge my ship as they have planned and furnish it with many of the things I make/find. There should be rewards to planet bases and ship bases, not just penalize one to make the other useful. This would allow freedom to build ship bases, planet bases or both...which gives the choice to the player to play as they wish, this is what open world games are all about.

IMO, Ship Combat is a big red flag for a feature thats promised but never delivered. Its essentially an entire new game, with its own rules, gameplay and balance.

That said, if it like a multiplayer FTL it should be an awesome an addicting addition to SB

You can travel either by auto-pilot (right now, peacefully and quickly) or manually. If you choose to fly manually, the starmap will open up and become the playing field. Foreign ships, friendly or hostile, are on this starmap, as well as planets and moons. At the start of the game, you don't have a weapon, or a very well-made ship, so you'll have to flee from hostile enemies. But as the tiers advance, you learn how to make stronger ship hulls and cannons, as well as more space for both.

There are a couple controls for your ship along this 2D, birds-eye view starmap. The ship is in the center of the screen. WASD is up-down-left-right, respectively. Clicking or pressing the Space button will cause you to fire. Hovering over a ship or system and pressing "X" will cause you to beam down to it. Pressing Esc. will halt the ship and return to controlling your character inside the ship.

Hull upgrades increase defense and health. Cannons can be used for dealing damage, but they're too big for a human to use them, so they're ship-mounted. Upgrades for cannon space could work, too. While flying, you consume 1 coal per 5 seconds. If your ship is destroyed or runs out of coal, it sinks and crash-lands towards the nearest planet.

TL;DR: The ship can be manually sailed, allowing you to control on the starmap, take it to ships and planets, and fend off/avoid hostile ships. You can use ship cannons and stronger hulls for damage and survivability.

i think for PvE it will work like a random interruption during the FTL travel between planets. Cutting to an interface looking just like a side view FTL (the game).

For PvP, you will probably have to go into star map and click on another players location icon. IAs long as you have the required fuel, there may be a prompt to the other player to accept the challenge or refuse. I doubt the penalty for losing would be anything more than pixel loss.

If combat is just like in FTL, you select a weapon then select a target on the opposing ship. When the weapon is ready to fire it shoots automatically. During this time you are free to move about your ship as usual. Either to prepare to fight or maybe you can man guns to make them fire faster or work your way to your own teleporter to prepare to board opposing ship.

First player to deplete other players HP to 0 wins round and % of pixels. Both player ships will be at same location of the battle after fight.

Maybe you can even give priority targets and let your NPC's operate the guns while you fight boarders and the like.
