I would like to see this as well and expected it based on the theme of the game. On one hand I do like the primitive survival feel, but crafting and upgrading pickaxes doesn't really do the Space Sci-fi theme any justice. I agree wholeheartedly with most of this thread and individual posts. I believe the concept of analyzing or feeding the MM materials to upgrade it makes the most sense.
The matter manipulator was really a selling point of the game, I don't know if they simply gave up on it, or if they're planning on adding proper upgrades, or something else.
yeah also it says, pics are so last millenium this one is made out of diamond, THEN IF ITS SO LAST MILLENIUM, WHY IS IT BETTER THAN MY MATTER MANIPULATOR, ARE YOU SAYING MY INVENTIONS ARE CRAP SIR?!?!?
Or have picks in game but early on allow players to craft a focusing core for matter manipulator, effectively upgrading it and changing beam color or area of effect later on. Can be tiered like other tools to have progression. Should be a tool that "grows" with you. Would also be an interesting 1dps last ditch weapon
I agree, there really isn't any point to a 'matter manipulator' if we have to create pickaxes and axes. Having the MM act as the equivelent of both and needing to craft upgrades to it accomplishes the same thing as using the other two tools, frees up inventory, and adds a uniqe twist. If there is some fundemental reason that we have to have the seperate tools, we should have just started off with them, like Terraria.
Yeah, the pickaxes are goofy. They should be left in the game as a joke item, but the idea that they're stronger than your matter manipulator is just immersion-breaking and takes away from the game's sci-fi feel. (And obviously I hate durability and think it's a worthless mechanic, but I'll spare you that here! I do think that trying to shoehorn durability into the matter manipulator would just come off as silly. Maybe make it cost energy instead, if you need something like that?)
Definitely agree, this has been my motto since the game came out. There's no reason this game has to have ore-on-a-stick mining tools like Minecraft and Terraria. That really needs to go. With the wipe coming soon, this is the perfect time to do it also. Get rid of pickaxes, plz and ty, plz. Also, the idea with the tiered Matter Manipulator could be that you're crafting battery packs with the ore, and some coal and pixels or whatever else, and the durability would be the battery losing juice, so you use more ore to refit it. Simple, makes sense, and fuck pickaxes...
I think it's fine starting out with crafting primitive tools, but I think as we progress up the materials our 'tech level' should go up, with industrial tech at steel level, for example. Upgrading from pickaxes to jackhammers/drills to better energy-based tools as the materials get better.
I agree with this. The Pickaxes may seem silly but it is a nice basic, staple common approach if you were stranded on a deserted planet, and your high-tech ship isn't capable of materialize the best mining device or there isn't upgrades for your Matter Manipulator. The MM definitely is still quite a useful tool in terms of construction, placing objects, torches and etc. So it gets plenty of use. If this was like a real life situation, you don't have time to complain, whatever the reason you had to be stranded on a foreign planet is a better time invested in attempting to familiarize your surroundings, setup a home or "Base of operations" to weather out natural hazards, weather and natural protection from all forms of attackers, and a place to safely store and craft your belongings. A Pickaxe is a basic device towards excavation, Primitive but its helpful even in a High tech, high-society world. But Ogre is right, once ya right Diamond Pickaxes, even molten rock, obsidian and such is still rather slow to mine. There player needs to find or be allowed to Research new devices to aid in Excavation, Harvesting, etc.
Some people have lives, school, and work. Don't be dismissive of them. On topic, YES YES A THOUSAND TIMES YES!!!! We are talking about a flipping MATTER MANIPULATOR!!! A MATTER MANIPULATOR! There should be no way a pickaxe can come even close to competing with that. Maybe say it's damaged and you need to improvise the components or something. But get rid of gold, silver, and diamond tools. They are entirely illogical. Gold and silver are far too soft, while accidentally striking your diamond pickaxe on a cleavage point means that your absurdly expensive tool is no more.
Why? We're talking about a matter manipulator. It should be more versatile than even a sonic screwdriver. Just have the player craft "Manipulation Chipsets" and use them. They would be added to the first matter manipulator in their inventory. If there is none, simply refuse use of the chipset until they put one into their inventory. The message could be something like "You need a matter manipulator to install this into."
Good idea. Besides... You are 2 wide and 4 tall so it works out, the pick just breaks more than needed
Well my thinking is that if you upgraded it, you would only ever use it. You wouldn't have a verity of tools to use in different places.
Why would you need different tools in different places? Tools should be purpose based. Breaking and placing blocks is one purpose, which is filled by the matter manipulator. Done and done. Same as wiring is filled by the wiring tool rather than using what Terraria does and needing different tools to wire and dewire. The flashlight (which some people think should be integrated with the MM, something I harshly disagree with) provides a carry-able light source while torches do the same but for a placeable light source.
Verity. I like verity. One thing I am hoping for is to have a lot of different tools (items in general) that look and feel different. I don't want to only use the matter manipulator. I want a drill with a flashlight. A gun that shoots demo changes, An ore vacuum that harvest ores well leave the blocks intact, A drilling platform that I can ride on, chemical sprayer that turns stone to gravel, A implosion charge, A heated pickaxe that harvest refined metals rather then raw ores, A tellyport bomb that automatically stores the blocks in your ship's hold, some other crazy idea that I didn't think of yet. Verity is the spice of video games.
I'm definitely of a mind that the Matter Manipulator could be made into a "wonder tool" of sorts, and be something that you upgrade throughout the game to improve its functionality. The pickaxes look goofy and feel out of place. One suggestion I saw on another forum is to make upgrades for the Matter Manipulator drop from bosses.
Well, I won't lie to you, those all sound awesome and now I want them too. I still want my Matter Manipulator to matter (ha!) though. Later updates after diamond or platinum tier towards progressively better equipment and then back to an upgraded matter manipulator would be best IMHO.
