I'd love Starbound to start from scratch.

That would kind of defeat the point. You're escaping a blown up planet, when you arrive on the space station.

Honestly, I rahter like the arriving at a space station first part. IT's a run down piece of junk and you have to make i better.

The space station thing isn't going to change, nor should it. It's apparently an integral part of gameplay and it should remain that way. That said, if it really is as run-down as it sounds and your shuttle presumably isn't the greatest for interstellar travel, it would make sense if you only had a very limited (maybe even only 1 to begin with) number of planets you could visit at the start. You'd have to use the resources from that beginning step to improve the station/shuttle enough to visit a wider range of planets. Makes sense to me and it would still sort of fulfill that sense of "starting from scratch", at least to a degree.

I agree, but the game is almost finish and realsed maybe they can do it as like updates and patches like change it up.

  6. A survival mode is something that'd be nice to see in Starbound. Once you finish the story, you can just focus on those awesome gameplay elements you love so much :3

What point does it defeats exactly? Your home planet blows up, your escape capsule lands on some random planet, you explore, build stuff, gather resources, find some clues about who destroyed your planet, find some clues about space station, fix up your capsule, go to space, find the station, continue with the rest of the story...

Nothing is effected, the only thing that is changed is the fact that now you have to experience pure survival, building and exploration of the game without any "pre made" content from the devs, which is not anything crazy for the game with focus on those three things.

I personally don't have problem with the station, its just I rather not use it from the very beginning. See my reply to Melissia ^

I'm inclined to agree with you, actually, I would prefer not to have that available to me at the beginning either, I just think it would be unrealistic to even consider them changing that, they seem pretty commited to it as a focal point of the gameplay, from the start. I just hope, assuming the station stays much as it seems to be now, that it is rather defunct and forces you to repair it before you can really do anything of substance with it.

I like the idea of starting with nothing also, well not nothing nothing, but like a stick and the cloths on my back. I want to start the game with some crappy melee weapon, a serious lack of armor, and some blueprints (or the ability to get some) of better gear to point me in the right direction. I loved the starts in Minecraft and Terraria a ton. Now that being said I don't see how starting in the station prevents you from that kind of start. From everything I've heard it sounds central to your gameplay being where you research stuff, tame pets, build ships / gear, and a hub for multiplayer. Now if all of that is unlocked at the start, I may or may not be disappointed. But I swear I read that the station is busted and you'd have to unlock those things (hopefully you don't have to unlock multiplayer, that would suck). So, if all you have is the option to research stuff (that would require resources I hope) and you'd have to get stuff to get the rest of that station working. I would be very happy.

It just really depends on the state of the station when you start the game. You can start with nothing and have the spacestation's husk as your "spawn point" where the guide roams and little rabbits hop past waiting for a green slime. And I think it would be better that way as the station is supposed to be your safety zone. And when you want to explore you find a planet and have at it. Plus, having the station doesn't prohibit you from plopping down on a planet and building your own safety zone, while you still have nothing. Though I do suppose you lose the appeal of "oh crap it's getting dark" and you blitz to finish your walls before zombies show up.

"As luck would have it, the space shuttle makes contact with an abandoned space station and an adventure begins that will take you hurtling across the universe." From the sounds of it. You're going to be starting with pretty much nothing anyways. Your clothes and then maybe the special building tool that you find on the abandoned station. So, yeah, it's kinda the same thing. You're not going to start with everything you ever needed and you're going to have to work to get the space station back in good working order most likely.

See, the issue I have with being dumped on a planet to build up everything, is that building a spaceship, is NOT easy. And with only primitive tools you can scrape together on a planet, that's nearly impossible. I know that people probably stretch the exact processes but still, it's completely unrealistic to think that someone could go down to a planet and make a spaceship with what they can find on that said planet even while relying on some tweaked logic. I mean, yeah, it sounds fun, but so does being on an abandoned station that you're supposed to build up. Plus, you're going to have to go to multiple planets to get different things if the generation is varied enough. It's not going to be as simple as plopping down on a planet and getting everything you ever needed on that one planet.

In a Sci-fi setting I think it would be possible. A rudimentary rocket to take you outside the atmosphere isn't that hard to make. I'm not talking about FTL or anything electronic yet... You don't need a flight computer to achieve lift-off. And even so, you could think of that building tool of having some form of AI to help and guide you along the way. I wouldn't want a detailed and realistic process anyway. For instance you wouldn't have to make thin copper plates and turn them into motherboards, your AI/building tool would take care of that behind the scenes.

Indeed. Though going on a "treasure hunt" to upgrade the space station isn't really going to give me a great feel of exploration. The way it looks from the gameplay vids it's just possible to teleport back whenever. The only downside seems to be that you end up at the highest ground block of the planet again. (Since that's predictable behaviour you can always make this a safe spot)

For me a great game doesn't necessarily have a long questline or techtree or whatever... but a broad one. Different ways to get the same result are something I really love. It adds more to replayability than "oh right, now i need item x again to proceed".

I'm kinda on both sides of the fence here. Mostly because eithierw ay alot of players I think will not like one option or the other. Personally I prefer to start with nothing. It's more challenging that way. Or almost nothing much like Terraria.

Something else to consider is this, the starting "space station" that you get to. Has a bunch of stuff in it, but none of it has any power, or it's all badly damaged. going through all the stuff that's in the station, your character manages to fix up the ( I dunno what it's actually called.) the transporter/teleporter. This way he/she can get to the planet's surface below, and start scavenging for materials etc. Your character may not personally have any idea how to make alot of this stuff, but the computer on your shuttle had alot of blueprints on it, and that's how you originally got the transporter working again, and you start slow from there, give the player a few "blueprints" for say the transporter, a database computer, a fabricator, and some power sources. Once they have these built and on the space station, they can access the space stations databsae, that has yet more blueprints. These go into the detail of interstellar travel, better mining tools that allow you to dig out things you previously couldn't, better lifesupport systems for a suit or something, just incase some of the caverns in the planet has toxic gases where the minerals are. Once you read through that,y ou head back to the planet yet again, dig deeper find the resources you need and inevitably, get the space station operate again, to a point it can move from planet to planet, but just within that solar system, or perhaps that galaxy. Then you can upgrade it further to do travels that are farther and farther away. This would give the game a feeling of progression, and it'd work to satisfy both the people that want to start with nothing, and those that don't. But who knows!

I am okay with station having blue prints and stuff stored on it, but I much rather prefer to go to planets and acquire technology by scavenging through caves, old temples, labs, bases etc, or by talking to different races and trading or doing quests for them for information and technology, just sounds like way more fun way to go about giving player more stuff than just getting from the computer on the station or whatever. Again, I am all about exploration, building and survive, and less we have to deal with pre made content that we are bound to (like the ship and the station), the better imo. I am pretty sure I will not even bother with station or the story for longest time, I just gonna try to explore the heck out of first planet I can get to and build stuff before worrying about progressing the story, I am just afraid that devs will try to limit player too much by tying the advancement to the story.
