So, a mechanical suggestion would be water temperatures depending on various circumstances.
    • Cold Biome would have water with ice chunks floating on top by default. (do they move? can you stand on them? Does the water slow you more than usual? Does it eat your breath meter faster?)
    • Normal temperature water by default in most areas
    • Water just above just a little lava would be warm and steamy (not dangerous)
    • Water just above much lava would be boiling and steamy (dangerous without right equip?)
    Other Water related Ideas:
    • Hot Biome (desert) could have a "you've been in the sun to long" meter, requiring you to reset it by finding shade or an oasis of non-boiling water (or wearing protective gear)
    • Jungle water could be murkier that normal water, and have some floaties like flower pads or logs (cosmetic or tangible)
    • DIY kayak...
    • I saw another thread about Geysers, but heated water could play a part in that too
    • If the water is colder than the air above it, it could produce fog. (this would require giving each biome it's own air temperature and ways it could be manipulated, like number of suns up, time of day or night, lava, ice, etc...)
    • Lunar tide? ( Extreme case )
    Example Water Temp Table:
    • -3 (-132*F) : Frigid Icy waters, chunks of icy bobbing in it (Exposure level 2)
    • -2 (30*F) : Cold Water, numbing effect that slows movements (Exposure level 1)
    • -1 (50*F) : Cool Water, refreshing
    • 0 (70*F) : Normal Water, bleh
    • +1 (90*F) : Warm Water, relaxing
    • +2 (110*F): Hot Water, tendrils of steam rise from the surface (Exposure level 1)
    • +3 (212*F) : Boiling Water, A rolling boil with lots of steam (Exposure level 2)

I'm a little iffy on the "you've been in the sun too long" meter, but I like the overall idea, and I agree that it could work very well with geysers. Confined, heated water creating more pressure, for example.

I actually like the Sun meter. It adds a touch of realism, because there's all kinds of things that can kill you from desert sun, whether it be heatstroke, dehydration, third-degree sunburn, whatever. It makes sense and gives a small extra challenge to desert biomes (easily worked around by carrying water and/or building small, temporary structures in the desert).

This is certainly an interesting concept. I am not a coder though, and I think a lot of these could be hard to implement.

For the water/lava interaction you would probably have to have a proximity ratio, I think.

    Very good ideas to all.
The programming of it would be interesting; but sided with that, perhaps it could be implemented upon the difficulty as well?
