I, for one, enjoyed the demo because it was simply people having fun with the game. Some people are obsessively progression oriented and I can see how that would be unsatisfying to watch, but for me I just enjoyed watching people genuinely have fun with the game together, explore, and enjoy the systems without taking it too seriously. In case you haven't noticed the game and the developers themselves don't always take it seriously. I personally know some people who became interested in the game through that demo.

Interesting ya mention that... i've had similar thoughts. i've pondered using Energy Guns to Mine instead of the actual Mining Tools the earliest in the game I can to dodge the Mining Tool Durability Limitedness. :sneaky: (Though this may waste my Glitch Armor Racial Bonus if I have it at that point in the game... :()

For the Topic: As of the time of this Post, i'm awaiting a chance to watch the Recording of the show, but I still see fit to remind people that when one can only sample a game instead of get comfortable with it, one cannot see the whole picture of what a game has to offer, so why worry about those that cannot understand this & try to gauge the whole of a something based on such a ludicrously small sample size? Plus, the Game will benefit from this Stress Testing from those new to the game & those who don't know how to play a game alike. ;)

Kinda like with the Mythbusters, "Failure is always an option.", & even failures can glean good useful info... thus not be any way shape or form of waste of time at all. :)

(Maybe the Noobs will help the Devs with making the beginning of the game more 'Noob Resistant' for example. :p)

  4. I 100% agree that this Stream made this game look like a Terraria RipOff (as we saw spammed thousands of times in the stream chat), not showing at all the true potential of Starbound, and with the guys playing not interesting in the game at all just acting childish making fun of stuff for laughs.

It wasn't a fail, but honestly, it could have been much MUCH better.

Yeah I thought it would be perfect time to advertise the game with devs showing some good gameplay and games full potential. The people who didn't know wtf they were doing made the game look boring imo. Kinda opportunity missed.

this topic, and countless others could have been avoided had we had a better demo run showcasing the game... a developer should have been priority pick, much like in e3, the devs show the gameplay and features, not some random douches

I don't know, it's just that... the whole thing really didn't show off what Starbound is all about. I don't think Yogscast was really the right choice. I'm sure they're nice guys, but I still think they should have chosen more serious people, whoever they may be. I mean, they just didn't get it. They really didn't. I did watch the whole thing, but parts of it really, really did bore me. I mean, I want to see GAMEPLAY MECHANICS, not a couple people destroying tents and destroying the staircases the one serious person made and consuming med kits "accidentally" when the other guy really needed them. It just... wasn't as enlightening as it could have been, and didn't really show us what Starbound could be as a game.

This post was not meant to offend anyone. Anything Starbound related is good in my book.

  9. I agree, it should have been more controlled, to show better what the game is really capable off, personally for me it makes to difference but for the thousands that saw it live got one idea of this game that is not what it is.

I found out that in every gaming community there are two camps of people. Those who like to derp around and have fun and those for whom gaming and progression and maximum stats of everything is serious business . To each his own though when the two camps clash it becomes unpleasant. A great example of that would be the Order of the Stick community (webcomic based on D&D) where even the author was so sick of all the rules lawyers and optimizers (there were arguments that a character sacrificed himself not because it was a right thing for him to do, but because he was unoptimized) that he said that he divorced himself from the d&d RAW and started to use homebrewed material.

When you have people playtesting your game, it's better that you let your testers learn the ropes on their own. However, when demoing the game to the public, it's normally important that your players know what they're doing so they can appropriately show off their game.

On that note, that's not really what the Yogscast Let's Play session was. It wasn't a developer presentation, it was just a Let's Play. The thing yesterday, an "Introduction to Starbound," was a dev presentation. When Legris wasn't able to progress, they sped things along by spawning tools and resources in so they could show off more of their game.

The point of today's Let's Play session was just to have fun with it.

I liked seeing the game played by people that haven't already gotten to explore everything, to them the smallest things may seem more significant than they do to a dev that's playing. Don't get me wrong, I love the team's demos/feature showcase videos, but it's nice to see someone fresh get to explore for once.

Anyone ever used to play old school games from the NES, Sega Genesis, SNES, & such era? Some Games had Demo Play after the Title Screen that had the Demo Characters being total Derps on purpose in a scheme to make a player feel like "Hey! Even an idiot like me can do better than that!" & wanna play the game just to show up the Demo... I know this worked on even a timid no-self-esteem person like me all that time ago. ;)

This may yet backfire & get people wanting to play Starbound for themselves just to show up these 2 bad players. :p

I'll say it again. I really enjoyed the stream. I dislike the Yogscast, but with that said they played how I would play. For fun and enjoyment. You could tell they were entertained by the game, which is what the point of it was.

It was Yogscast, what did you expect? ;)

You have to remember, it was a Let's Play, optimal strategies were off the table. Besides, what's the point of a game where you have to be 100% serious all the time?

Could they have performed better and not died so many times, sure. Would that have put the game in a better light? ... Maybe, maybe not. Remember, they have to avoid the risk of making the game seem too easy or too hard, throwing newbies into it demonstrates that perfectly. They learned, they improved, and they conquered. And, in my opinion, it was even fun to just watch.

Of course, I'm the type to actually enjoy the Let's Plays that allow for a bit of messing around. In other words, this event was literally designed to cater to people like me.

By the way, I think they mentioned last week that they're working on making the tiles under trees indestructible, so that will be out of the picture, probably before beta. As for the tent trolling, who knows. I'm kind of hoping they make the guns do a bit less block damage though. It seems kind of weird as-is.

The people playing were just frustrating to watch... I was excited for seeing Starbound being played, just not by some guys who jerked around and destroyed tents all day.

In my opinion the stream was ruined by their wacky sense of humour, they didn't even try to act professional.

  20. I don't even really like the way Yogscast covers minecraft content, but, and I might just be being biased because it's Starbound, I really liked their earnest play experience with the Starbound demonstration build. They made multiplayer look like a blast. I'm pretty pumped from the footage that I've seen.

edit: Albiet a LOT of tents were destroyed.

    R.I.P. tents.
