I wish this was also on 3DS

Skyrim requires 2Gb of ram, minimum on PC.
By your logic, Skyrim should not run on the 360 or PS3. Both of which only have 512Mb of ram.

Nintendo is great with indies. Why do you think the WiiU has over 180 confirmed indie games on the way?
They keep in touch with them, they help advertise their games on nintendo direct, they loan their dev kits e.c.t

I want to address this point.

Consoles use RAM more efficiently than their PC counterparts. When a PC game needs you to have 2Gb minimum a portion of that is always reserved for the OS and other system functions unlike consoles that have few and can focus on the game.

I want to add I'm not against Starbound on the 3DS but it does not seem possible. At least to me.

    I'm fine with the idea

Doing it is totally different, even if the 3DS can handle it, which I wouldn't know because I'M STILL STUCK WITH THE ORIGINAL DS!

Well, one could consider this true for the cartridge games, but there's been an update for one that I own and one my daughter owns... So I can't imagine why there would be no updating it.

3DS supports updating of both digital copy and cartridges.

Anyone who has owned a 3DS should have at least heard of the Mario Kart 7 update at some point in time if they have ever used the eShop.

Heck, I had to update my pokemon Y in order to do online trading.
And I downloaded the X patch by mistake. It took me a while to figure out that both games had separate updates...

The 3DS also supports self-contained (eShop not required) DLC and Updates as well
For Example: Monster Hunter and Final Fantasy Theatrhythm

I agree with everything but the controls. I find that many cite that reason as personal preference over practicality, letting their bias overrule the possibilities. (I am not saying you are)
When CF announced that Starbound was coming to PSP/PS, many flew of the handle even though it didn't affect them as PC players. They just didn't like the idea of the game crossing platforms.

There is no question that some styles of PC controls don't transfer to controller very well, RTS games and other pointer heavy games are made with mouse and keyboard in mind. You also have many games where controllers have the advantage such as fighters.
Then you have the middle ground, games that have various aspects to them and I think Starbound falls in to that category.

Aimed weapons like guns can be mapped to the right analogue stick for accuracy and the 2D platform style already easily transfers. The only aspects that provide a challenge are the inventory management and building mechanics.
Now while It's true the 3DS prob couldn't handle the game, the pen and touch screen is perfect for item management and would be so good for building. (Drawing your buildings in? As a mad builder, yes please)

As controllers begin to try different things, it becomes about how you implement it, not about how hard it is.
I have been helping a friend test the possibilities of the PS4 controller on the PC lately. He chose ARMA III as one of the games he wants to apply it to simply because of the overwhelming claim from many fans that it is impossible due to the sheer number of options and pointer reliance.
He got rid of the various movement speeds needing to be used. Most use normal speed and sprint only so the rest became useless.
The big obstacle is item management and the option drop boxes. The drop boxes were easy, the touch pad made for a good substitute to the mouse wheel and can be clicked when you highlight the option you want (Needs sensitivity options though)
Item management is a pain and will need a whole separate application to the drop boxes, but trying different things is part of the process.
