Hi, I'd like to make Mods for Starbound but I have never done any mods before where do I start any good beginner tutorials thanks
There arent a whole lot of mod tutorials for every different thing yet. One of the first things you could do is browse around the assets folder at all the different things. You don't have to really get good at lua unless you are creating anything more than a content mod imo. There are some tutorials over on the reddit, the wikis, and some modders even work on mods livestreaming. It's easy to look at a code and think you understand whats going on then later find yourself confused, videos could help that a bit.
Here's a serie that helped me out a lot. http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?threads/mod-tutorial-1-how-to-make-your-own-tool.40643/
Completely depends on the type of mod you want. I've been working on a mod that requires no LUA at all, just an understanding of basic JSON and how the game fits files together (a majority of current mods use this method, I think... it's much easier to start with). If you want to add something really new (something other than taking current game resources and mixing them together) then you'll need LUA. Honestly, if you're just starting out, you don't really even need any programming skill, just some patience.
First, you gotta start off with the basics: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=201040798 Also, don't be afraid to join the IRC channel if you need help. A lot of my questions were answered in there. ##starbound-modding
I'd like to note that this is an excellent guide on how to start modding, but it was created before a number of standards were changed. For example, you shouldn't have to modify the bootstrap.config file anymore if you're modding the correct way. This guide (link) will show you how to prepare your mods for distribution once they're ready.
That's why I also linked him to the IRC, as they taught me about the new .Modinfo file, and the new __merge options we now how, so that we can avoid touching the bootstrap.config and the player.config. It certainly makes modding easier.
Go to your friendly library or book place and buy some LUA books Or you can just follow the editing guides on the forums and that'll help you learn.
Following the guides we've posted, and hitting up the IRC will pretty much teach you what you need to know, so long as you ask. Feel free to snoop around the mods subforum, as guides seem to get churned out at a good pace.
