I still feel like races should have abilities...

The races are still relevant, even without special abilities, just for the sake of skins/costume alone. I like the option to choose what I look like, even if it's only cosmetic. Especially in games where I'll be playing with a group of 5-8 friends. I'm cool with them having racial abilities, but I'm also just fine with them not. Maybe introduce them and just allow a server option to allow racial abilities or not.

Oh, and not to mention how lore heavy the game is, which revolve heavily around the races. Take away races and look at how much lore you'd have to take away.

    This game's not lore-heavy, bro.

Oh man, if that's what you think, you'll be in for a pleasant surprise when 1.0 drops! Lore is a huge part of the game now. Hell, it's the may way you move the plot forward!

it's pretty lore heavy as it stands, if I'm not mistaken.

Nah boys, go for a title that's truly considered lore-heavy and you'll see that lore in starbound's just a side-feature.

Technically each race does get a perk
The avian that blesses you gives you a different buff based on your race.

right, that's why they spent upwards of a year solely focused on lore. even Destiny and the Souls games have lore, even if it's not shoved in your face like Halo or Dragon Age.

"having lore" and "lore-heavy" isn't the same. And please, i consider the whole pre-skyrim elder scrolls a lore-heavy universe, but by the love of the gods.. Starbound isn't lore-heavy.

I dunno man, I think Starbound is easily more lore-heavy than Skyrim. Besides, unless you've been exhaustively playing the nightlies, you haven't even seen all the lore yet???

Wait, is lore in this case considered good, or bad? Too much lore just drags a game down and makes it tiresome to play. I don't want to feel like I have to read a dozen books just before I start playing a game.

Personally I think race abilities would not be fair, as if a person likes the Avian armor, but has to play Hylotl for survival underwater it would be a pretty sad situation. It would be fun I can tell you that, but I think the way they did it currently that you have to gain specs like heat resistence via items, not tech or race abilites is pretty neat. The only thing bothering me is how wings can't make you glide/fly. Why did they even put the meteorite biome in the sky if you can't even get to it? Anyways these are just my thoughts, but if you still insist you could easily download a mod for it. It is a bit bugging that sometimes lore doesn't add up to in-game situation but balance is a bit more important.

okay, well, Kevin does have a point. the Elder Scrolls series is so lore-intensive most people don't want to deal with it, not to mention the ret-conned things. (spoiler: THE RET-CONS ACTUALLY MAKE SENSE!)

but still. for the type of game Starbound is - that is to say, a sand-boxy exploration side-scroller pixel game where you build things and see things, it has the ability to be very lore-heavy. of course, if you ignore the story and the codex, then it's about as lore-heavy as... freakin'... Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (the video game).

BTW, Novakid have a racial ability. Normally, it's not really apparent but, when you mod the game to restrict player-emitted light, Novakids still glow bright.

That is their "racial ability", even though it is extremely lackluster and has almost no effect on an unmodded game.

but still. I wouldn't say Starbound isn't lore-heavy. though, it certainly isn't as lore-heavy as other games out there.

Asthetics. It's like asking why everyone doesn't have the same colored house. They all still have the same effect but they're just different colors.

There ought to be a little more than just aesthetics when it comes to races. Especially if many late-game armors cover the whole body head-to-toe almost and all you need to do is spawn tenants to get armors from other races, that way you could have a human that looks like a floran if you buy floran armor.
