I see that some of the servers are getting great anti-grief security systems

Protected spawns, complete elimination of all grief projectiles from gases to water balloons. But what's left? stand in the spawn building and play instruments all day?

I mean yes you can travel to another planet, but if I do that I might as well do it in SP because there is literally no chance of running into anybody on a server except on the spawn planet. (Remember not everybody do or want to play exclusively with a handful of friends, there is a lot of appeal in open public worlds, like in MMORPGs.)

There is such a thing is too safe, make it too safe the game becomes a bad, standard and shallow RPG.

I think you'd have a better time playing multi with people you know; although I didn't like multiplayer myself, I didn't dislike multiplayer in starbound, since I've made some friends.

if that is what you want, you don't need any protection from the server side. Because you can just go to another planet with your friends and no griefer can touch you.

Eeyup. It's good to play with friends, rather than to have server-side mods hindering you down.

Well after joining a multiplayer server, and being spawned miles underground because of griefing, spawn planet protection seems like a real good thing to me.

What is it you want to do to the spawn that you're not allowed to do?

It's just that, to him, spawn is the best place to meet up with people; people are less likely to follow you to other planets, which means that any other place other than spawn is desolate, and are devoid of people. I believe OP wants an editable spawn, so that he may mold planets with other people, people who doesn't quite like going to other planets, even if asked apparently.

I'm not sure how having the spawn protected prevents you from meeting other people. It's a fixed location. Write down the coordinates and you can always return to it to "meet new people".
Seems like a perfect way to have a guaranteed hub that you know won't be destroyed by a griefer or troll.

If I was a server owner I would not want anyone to be touching the spawn without permission.

He can travel to another planet with a friend in the same server and do whatever.

I agree, although it might be a chore to convince a band of strangers to go to a planet with you, and to have them not grief your humble abode, or to not be a loot hog. But I don't think that's going to be too big an issue.

Spawn protection or not, you can't be serioius about
You do realize that if it wasn't protected, it would take little time for people to gut it of all materials and you wouldn't be landing on anything.

I don't understand the issue. Spawn protections were created to prevent griefers from server-jumping and mining away at the spawn (to kill other players). I can't see how this is a bad thing.

If you don't like spawn protections, play on a server that doesn't have any. There, problem solved.

I don't know what the picture in this thread has to do with spawn protection, but that is a rad tree fort.

It is showing why spawn protection is a GOOD thing. Spawning at an interesting place, instead of spawning miles underground like i have.

This thread makes no sense. The OP is complaining that having spawn protected is somehow damaging to the game's online experience. That is ridiculous. How is keeping people from completely ruining the very first planet new players see when they join the server worse than allowing them to do it? On top of that, you can go to other planets, you don't have to stay on spawn. The spawn planet is the first thing people see that represents a server. Most people like to build spawn cities that look amazing so that when new players arrive, they are given a good first impression. Something that says 'man, these guys are serious'. This is not possible if the buildings are not protected. Griefers will just level them.

If you're worried about not seeing people, make friends/allies and share coordinates. It's that easy. The main reason there isn't any incentive to join parties and care about making a base or colonizing a world is because there are no mechanics in place to facilitate those activities. No town building/protection, no assignable NPC behaviors or tasks, nothing. It's THAT reason that nobody cares to group up and settle worlds together.

Not protecting the spawn results in nothing. Literally, nothing. The ground will be destroyed and replaced with rainbow wood and people will just stand around griefing each other with rocket launchers and meteor spawning guns. We need anti-grief tools and spawn protection is very important. If you don't like not being able to edit terrain, don't go to a protected spawn planet. Go to one of the seemingly infinite number of other planets you have access to. It makes no sense to complain about something like this; something this game needs very badly is a wider array of anti grief measurements.

And, yes, people do like to stand around protected spawns and play instruments - socialize.

That's what global chat is for, no? It's not that hard to find people to play with... just party and/or share coordinates.

It seems like the OP is most angry that the tree fort is protected... I don't see why that would bother anyone doing what they want to do unless that something is to turn that tree fort into a crater. On pretty much every major Starbound server, the spawn world is pretty much mined clean anyway, and has structures covering the entire planet.

Agreed. Protecting the spawn can only do good rather than harm.

My suggestion, is that the protection should be limited to a small area immediately around the spawn location, not the entire spawn planet.

Having such a powerful protection, servers also tend to make these elaborate spawn building projects which is just over the top and completely removes all aspects of the game other than playing instruments. It should just be an indestructible medium sized house at the spawn less than a screen (50 blocks) wide. It should not be a planet city that people totally cannot play the game (you know, get some wood and iron ores) on.

    Raybrandt Jackpot!

It almost sounds like you're butthurt you can't fuck with the spawn so other people die or have nothing to teleport to, or somewhere that's unsafe so they can literally do fucking nothing.

And the other aspect of total elimination of all grief projectiles makes all explosive weapons
Because spawning into a planet that I cannot mine fuel from, only to be forced to fly to another planet with fuel that magically spawn into my inventory, and play a SINGLE PLAYER game on a MULTIPLAYER server seems more senseless than having the risk of running into one of those spawn griefers spamming meteorites.
