Starbound will now and forever be the game that I helped by accidentally finding the cause of a fairly big bug. It will have a special place in my heart.

Yes, I am taking this and running with it. Its not every day you find such things.

Is this consistently just from queries and not actual client connections? I ask because when Snowpup tested it the query server wasn't on the right version (but didn't crash it), once the query server was set to the right version (UG Update 1 at the time) the query ran successfully. Clients could still trigger this, though, so before you say it's the queries causing it, I'd test with a couple of clients as well (each disconnect seemed to be able to randomly trigger this behavior).

I tested connecting and disconnecting. A straight up port scan has consistently caused this issue. I've done this all with update 3.

I've turned my query off and TCP Scanner/restarter; it is still happening almost immediately. Literally within minutes of the game starting up.

Whatever causes it via port scanning could be linked to your issue, so I think they should still be treated as the same till at least the port scanning issue is fixed.

Yeah, we've been having similar issues with our own server ever since the latest update:

[01:24:32.031] Warn: UniverseServer: client connection aborted
[01:24:32.280] Warn: I/O error in RemotePacketSocket::receiveData, closing: (NetworkException) tcp recv error: An established connection was aborted by the software in your host machine.

We're also running a server on windows OS (windows 2008)

Any idea what's causing this and how we might fix this?

Same problems here, most recent updates didn't fix a thing except the fact that not even a server config file is generated anymore.

Lots of upset players and lots of extra work for me. By all friendliness, it's not good practice to break the windows server every few updates. Especially as it gets closer to release.

was wondering when others would start posting. must be happening to all windows users. if you need something to auto restart when it happens i made a small .bat program on page 2 that has been working grate for me!

    A. Sethjd: thank you for that .bat file, I will try it out.

    B. Is there a place where we can gather all these complaints together so that perhaps this very major problem will be patched sooner than later?

You're posting in that place right now.

I'm fairly sure the devs are aware of this, given the activity in this thread (they do look into the Support forum regularly). I believe someone already said they mentioned it in IRC to a dev. Couldn't hurt to catch someone online in the IRC though to double-check that they know it's an ongoing issue (be prepared to give info, such as logs, conditions, things tried, etc if you do get a hold of one of the devs, they'll likely need this info to trace the cause of the issue).

That is exactly the point, I don't want to assume someone will take care of it, I want to KNOW the issue is going to be addressed as soon as possible. As far as logs, coding, debugging and even coffee - I'm all game to help the devs however they deem fit, let's just get our servers back, I still have a full community of Starbounders to answer to and I'd like to be able to at least something of worth.

And, as artisticMink said earlier: I love the new updates, and I love the fact the game is being updated regularly, but it can't be that every update I have to fret that I'm going to lose the server!

Fair enough, I know it's a small dev team and they probably have their hands full with loads of other problems we probably don't know about. Just let us know how we can help and we'll do it. This is a fairly active and friendly community, luckily enough - let's take advantage of that.

    This is spot on.

So far there has been zero reply or discussion from the devs about this incredible bug. Something of this sort SHOULD be priority and worked on ASAP. When a release happens it's good to get the game-breaking bugs resolved and push a hotfix immediately.

I bet it would take a few hours, if that to track and fix this thing down. Even if it was a worse-case scenario and took a few DAYS, that would be acceptable... As long as it was being worked on! There's plenty of us that would help test and troubleshoot together with the devs to squash this... But it seems that no care is shown for it.

From the looks of it we'll have to wait another month or two until the next stable update which is... Ridiculous. My fairly large playerbase is either going to move on or quit Starbound altogether... This hurts every single one of us affected by this literal game-breaking bug and it needs to be properly addressed.

I'm not trying to be snarky or anything but... Help us out here. This update was supposedly all about server stability yet we can't even run servers anymore.

You know I thought the issue was resolved with update 4, apparently people are still seeing it, I am currently checking again on windows and will notify you shortly

Edit: Aha! the problem still exists on windows. I will fix it and release an update 5.

Edit2: The problem is not the SAME problem as was fixed in update 4, it's an unrelated deadlock that is triggered on windows by the same mechanism, but in either case it's being fixed in update 5.
