The question about vehicles though is what if you die enroute? Does your vehicle get destroyed, or will it respawn with you?

I would imagine it would just stay where it is until you retrieve it.

would it disappear over time though? or stay until retrieval?

I really really want various ways of fast intraplanetary travel. Rough possible guidelines:

    Tier 0: footwork.
Tier 1: non-automatic — basically, vehicles of all kinds, including land-, sea- and air-based ones.
Tier 2: fully automatic — trains and other means of automated travel between two or more locations. These are somewhat bulky and maybe even tedious to build (this is a good thing), because you need to construct full railway between two stops and perhaps to protect it from the enivronment. Some may be kinda slow but cheap in resources, using only common ones, while others, more advanced, may be really (but not extremely) expensive in rare materials.
Tier 3: semi-automatic — some vehicles (perhaps mostly air- and sea-based ones) can have an auto-pilot function. Player can construct one or more waypoints, small specific structures, wherever he wants. Then, if he have an access to a waypoint, he can use these vehicles to travel there automatically.
Tier 4: instant — teleportation between special structures, access-restricted, of course. Extremely expensive, perhaps even ridiculously. Also, possible item: "remote teleportation network access", both consumable (cheap, mid-tech) and permanent (costly, high-tech) flavors, which allow a player to teleport to any teleportation waypoint from anywhere in the world.

If it were a couple of decades ago I'd have said that it might disappear when the planet is left. But today? I'd say it is entirely possible for the vehicle to remain where it is permanently until retrieved (or destroyed). But I, of course, have no idea in what way the Devs plan to handle such an instance so I can't rightly say for sure which it'll be.

    Makes sense.

I like the idea of tiers, and the laziest mode of travel being the most difficult to make.

If you can orbit a blender you can orbit a train.

So who here is going to be the first to play StarBound on a train?

I don't like trains. They are slow and annoying, it's like being in a plane but without the flying or hot flight attendants.
