I hope Starbound doesn't get too caught up in block building.

It does, the developers shouldn't just copy Terraria, this game is supposed to go into a new direction!

They are going in a new direction but don't expect the building aspect of Terraria and Minecraft to be gone. They've already indicated that they will let players build block by block. Besides, they can't go too far away from Terraria or Minecraft as their primary audience are players of both games. People like me, who don't want just another RPG.

His pic doesn't change the fact that Terraria had horrible animations and kinda bland art style. Starbound's looks a million times better.

I know, I know. I wouldn't want that aspect to be gone anyway! I'm just saying, even if this game uses trusted, classical features, it will be totally new and unique! ;)

Well, you could have them add an NPC that will build stuff (not random, but to a theme and with your materials) but it won't be so customizable, block by block building is still getting my vote.

Well you can only arrive on a planet type so many times. Even if you have a 100 different environments of worlds you'll still run out of new things to happen on those worlds. As for "galactic community" I don't know what you mean there. I understand what you're saying though. Building is fun but it doesn't go very far. At least in Terraria it didn't go very far.

If the block-building is even remotely close to Terraria's, with all the other features announced for Starbound, I'll be one HAPPY panda.

I loved the idea behind building in Terraria but I, like some others have pointed out, this shouldn't be Terraria and it won't be Terraria. I think if they were to do building, which it seems like they have planned too, then they need to do it to the max. Terraria was alright with building, but it got boring quickly because there really wasn't any depth to the building. It became stagment because of its total lack of mechanics. Even after the introduction of basic wiring, it was still rather bland. It would be interesting to see a more advance iteration of building in Starbound but at the same time, I hope they really focus on the exploration factor of the game as well. :)

You guys are making too much of a big deal out of this. With literally thousands of a single thing like a rocket launcher, I don't think it's possible to go wrong with the combat/exploration bit, as long as they stay focused in improving it, which I'm sure they will. Obviously, they've also included mining AND building, block-by-block, prefab, and terraforming all in one, which is one of my favorite aspects from Terraria, as long as we're comparing it to that. I think not only do both aspects go hand-in-hand, but the devs are very aware of that fact. I, personally, would rather trust the devs and wait for them to do as they see fit, but then again, two questions arise from that statement: A, what are the forums for if not incessantly arguing and nitpicking every little thing? And B, what else are we supposed to do until the game comes out? Play Terraria? So for now, I'll join in these little skirmishes. But back on topic: Block building is awesome, but so is combat, and exploration, and I'm sure the devs know all that and will act accordingly.
