I hope Starbound doesn't get too caught up in block building.

I was just thinking, it's great and all that Starbound will have building aspects from Terraria (and minecraft).

However I hope it isn't what comes to define Starbound. If it does I will be a little let down. I have been hoping that this game will go it's own path rather than falling straight into the Minecraft genre.

Personally I would rather see Starbound focus more on the infinite universe, interacting with the galactic community (for better or worse) and having unique experiences when arriving on a planet for the first time (like in episodes of stargate)

There's no reason it can't have expansive building aspects AND everything else, is there?
Personally, I'll be disappointed if it doesn't go well beyond the building freedom Terraria had.

Why not have some pre made shapes you could tell your character to build automatically, and fill with a background of your choice? Or a click and drag thing to create a rectangle or such. Like a paint program.

In all honesty Terraria wasn't that much of a building game really. For the most part of Terraria, I did a lot of fighting and mining, but only started to build advanced buildings and such after I got board and started to make more videos of the game.
The thing is, there is only so much the game can have to offer, and having everything random will have its limits. There are 21,000 different visual designs for the rocket launcher, I don't want the ability to make them by will, I want to find all 21,000 different looking rocket launcher, now that will give me something to do. (I just got off topic). But the point is, I think that Starbound has its own limits, and can't give you to much random things. Don't worry to much, I doubt Starbound will get caught up into the building aspect, but my biggest fear of it is that it will end up as a walk and loot game, I hope that there will be tons of fighting and boss fights similar to Terraria.

People who like to get creative, like me, can't really work with that I guess. It's too limited to unnecessary boundaries. Maybe as an option that can be turned on and off, but I love to build something piece by piece, it grants the ability to add a lot of detail.

I didn't mean it to replace the block by block, but rather, to supplement it. And people who don't care for building can use it to slap up some houses in a hurry. People who like building, myself included, could use it to make a base to work off of, then go back into block mode and fine tune it. Or just start with block mode altogether.

Looking at the About page, it doesn't look like it's going to be focused on building at all.

Which is fine for me. If I wanted a Terraria clone, I'd play Terraria.

It'd be nice to have weapons that damage terrain though.

Terraria clone, pffft. I want an expansion on everything Terraria was.

OT: I don't think building will get in the way, but with spaaaaaace gear, you can't help but open up your imagination a bit.

I understand the ultracustomization that comes with being able to build your own world/base, but not every indie game has to be about building with blocks these days.

This is probably something the Devs are going to have a long think about somewhere down the line. Or have already had.

Terraria didn't rack up hundreds hours of playtime because of the exploring alone. It's a key component of the game - removing it is like removing gravity from Mario games and having him just noclip through the entire level.

Having an extensive building aspect and having an extensive exploration aspect are not mutually exclusive, and neither should take a backseat to the other when they build off each other so well.

Hmn, you may have a point and be missing the point at the same time. This game is advertised as super-exploration focused with a billion different worlds, each completely randomized. Terraria wasn't made to be focused on exploration, it was made to be building and adventure. this game seems to be focused on exploration and adventure instead.

I'm not saying that there shouldn't be any kind of building at all. I'm just saying the pickaxe-block-craft formula is definitely not what they seem to be aiming for, which seems to be what you expect.

I agree. So far, the game looks like it going for more of an action platformer rpg kind of game with sandbox elements in it, rather than a sandbox game with action platformer rpg kind of elements in it. And I am perfectly ok with that. Like Starheaven07 said, if we want to play a Terraria like game, we can play Terraria.

Damn I totally agree with op. I don't see the need to shoehorn in block-based building or voxels in every game. Some light elements are fine but the more focus is placed on it, the less I think gets focused on rich world generation and focused gameplay.

I hope it works in a way that you can place individual shapes but also buy/make blueprints to place pre-made structures. But I can see where the OP is coming from only block is very limiting on what you can really do in the long run.

As previously said, Tiy said there will be blueprints for buildings, you will probably be able to make a prefab.

Maybe you make a blueprint of a base, then you just fill it in with what you want, that would be awesome and not so time consuming when making a town.

Have you even read the FAQ???

    1) There will be MINING.
    2) There will be BUILDING
2.1) There will be BUILDING block by block.
2.2) There will be BUILDING trough already premade blueprints for things like an Weather Control Station.
2.3) There will be BUILDING trough an UFO that can make big changes to the terrain.
