I honestly believe Starbound was... A failure, to say the least?

Most of the guys points are valid complaints, assuming this was a released game. I mean why play a preleased game then complain about it being limited/buggy/not customizable? If you came into a Stage 1 beta expecting a finished game, then you really don't understand betas and should never take part in them. They even explained what Stage 1 of the beta would be. In detail. I seriously can't wait until we have 500 threads ranting about character wipes tomorrow when the patch most likely goes live.

By the way, about that "it's not fun part". Even with the current issues, it is still very fun. Many people have over 30+ hours already. If it's not fun, why are there so many people enjoying it, and why are there so many positive reviews. There's something like 3,000 reviews on steam already, and only 6 are negative. All 6 of those reviews are the same as yours too, all their complaints have already been covered by Tiy before the beta was even released. Stage 1 is for people who want to test the game while core mechanics are still being worked on, and while most of the content is unfinished or doesn't even exist yet.

TL:TR - We are helping test the game and give feedback. If we have fun while doing so, then that's a bonus. If this isn't your cup of tea. Wait... For... Stage... 2...

I dunno, I think the graphics are fine personally, I don't understand what he means about things being hard to distinguish. If I post a screenshot like this, could you point out which parts are troublesome?

the problem is that you havnt given a single piece of constructive criticism, everything you have said is coming from unfiltered and uneducated thoughts.

as university student studying IT atm i can tell you right now, making monsters "smarter" is no easy task, especially in a game where its procedurally generated and the monsters are put in all kinds of situations.

The game is very clunky and unintuitive : what does this even mean? you were confused with every piece of UI and didnt know how to start the game?

    * The interface is unhelpful and I often find myself fighting with it : restatement of your first complaint

    * The inability to change controls is tedious : BEE EEE TEE AYE

    * Enemies are less intelligent than Terraria's, a feat I didn't think was possible : AI is no simple task, especially in a procedural game, it will obviously improve with time.

    * It isn't fun : being the second most played game on steam, you are in a minority im afraid.

    * I get so many errors, crashes, and black screens - One time, my view zoomed in to what looked like 10x with the zoom option only being at 2x in the menu.: BEE EEE TEE AYE

I haven't logged this many hours in a game this quickly in a long time--me and my friends are so totally into this game. I did feel something was kinda broken with 1-shotting outside of a few levels range, so I'm glad the new system is being implemented.

I haven't had very many crashes/technical issues though; I can imagine that would be quite frustrating.

Actually there is a huge error in the title of the thread itself. "Starbound was a failure..."

Starbound was not a failure, because Starbound is not yet completed nor released.

You may say that game X released fully a month ago was a failure, but you cannot really say that of a game that has a release date in the future.

    Agreed.

The whole AI complaint I agree with, but the way some people word their complaints makes me just want to say "How about you code the AI?". They have no clue how tedious and time consuming proper AI is. For AAA games, teams of highly skilled people (larger than Starbound's entire team) work just on AI, and it still takes them an incredible amount of time. Months. We all know it's bad, and we all know it'll be improved before release, but you still can't expect AAA game level AI.

The point is to receive helpful feedback. You aren't doing that, you are just saying "it's a failure" and list off a bunch of things that are going to change anyway. Your post is misdirected, unhelpful, and pretty much is exactly why early beta releases should not be open to the public, most people just simply do not understand the nature of development.

Personally, the game is pretty much where I expected it to be, perhaps a little farther along than I expected. Just come back in four months or so and I think you will have a much better experience.

there's such a thing as being even remotely constructive with your criticism and trying to figure out how to make it better and... what this is. this is declaring the game a failure while it IS in beta, you really can't have a failure at this point. so... no, throwing the "it's beta" at this kind of complaint, because that's what this is not criticism, is really all you can do with this because it is a completely useless, vapid complaint that accomplishes nothing.

Yeah, it actually is fairly tedious to play through currently. I'm stuck in the mire that is "insta-kill central".
I can't find the necessary material to progress in the armor tier to survive getting hit by ANYTHING at the level I'm supposed to be exploring. (gold is stupidly rare so far)
It's frustrating to play without guidance, or known coordinates for weapon drops, as nothing I've found so far drops guns.

But a "failure"? No. Absolutely not. The game is unfinished, and in dire need of tweaking. But that's exactly what the Betas is for.
Provide feedback, yes, but don't go forward presuming the entire game is a failure already. Things can be fixed, refined, and changed in this stage. Things can improve.

(I totally disagree about the AI; Terraria's AI is the absolute minimal effort required. On the other hand, I've seen NPCs in Starbound who can actually traverse terrain well enough when provoked, and even shoot straight.
Granted, most monsters will still get hung up on random crap, but it's still a step up overall.)

Stage 1 will be move at a breakneck speed. This will be the buggiest and busiest stage of the beta. A bunch of unfinished features will be disabled whilst we finish them up. Updates will come thick and fast, sometimes as often as multiple updates a day.

If you choose to take part during stage 1 you should expect bugs, lots of balance changes, you shouldn’t get too attached to your character or universe as we may make changes that require you to start from scratch. You should expect the game to be broken at points as we make sweeping changes but you’ll get to enjoy exciting new content added constantly. The engine won’t optimized during this stage of the beta so performance could be poor on some low end machines.

You’ll get to see a bunch of ‘behind the scenes’ content at this stage and provide feedback during this crucial period.

DO take part in this stage if:

    - You enjoy testing buggy and unfinished code

    - You enjoy providing feedback

    - You want to leave your mark on the game

    - You just can’t wait any longer

DO NOT take part in this stage if:

    - Bugs infuriate you

    - You don’t like spoilers

    - You can’t stand losing your save

    - You want the full Starbound ‘experience’ the first time you play.

    Tiy said....

    So PLES, STFU

This is why early access is a double edged sword these days. To many people treat it as a final product thanks to the larger game developers providing a almost completed game and just try to rack in extra cash by providing "early access".

This right here is indeed early access since the game ain't finished and features are still missing so there is really no points in screaming and kicking that the game is bad.
Right now i personally am just waiting for the updates to come over the next few weeks and see where the game goes. Right now the potential for starbound are huge and that should be the exciting part.

However seeing as the OP is not the only person to jump off the fence this quickly i can understand where he and so many others are coming from.
There are a few things in starbound that i personally would have expected to be in the game at this stage of development but are either not in yet or simply not part of final feature list.

But like MC and terraria, updates will be coming after the game has reached released state, and both games became alot bigger and better during those updates so no doubt in my mind starbound will see the same thing.

As Tiy said a month ago -and a lot of people in this thread, of course-, this is phase 1 beta. You shouldn't expect a complete Starbound experience, not even close. This game is about to evolve, and the only thing we can do at this time is wait for it. And support it.

i dont know why nobody has picked up on this but saying "its not fun" is not a reason that he did not enjoy it. its not fun is not a reason, its an opinion.

I do think that Chucklefish did a poor job of reminding people of this:
    http://playstarbound.com/how-the-beta-is-going-to-work/

Many of the people on these forums have been here for a year or two so to most of us "oldies" it was obvious (as shown by many posts on this thread!), but I don't remember there being any mention of how early the beta is on the Steam store page.

I really think that people don't realize how many features are currently disabled so that they can better focus on testing different things.
Main quest, monster capture system (enabled tomorrow!) and the ability to upgrade your ship are all currently disabled.

The main quest in particular I'd expect to teach you all sorts of things.
On that note Starbound has a quest system with a quest log and what not yet only one quest is enabled atm.
NPCs are going to give you quests eventually.

Acid rain and the weather and gravity control systems seem to be disabled currently as well.
