I have a great idea!

Imagine if someone went through the trouble of creating their favorite worlds in previous video games in starbound. Every planet could be a different game world, and offer unique quests and challenges. We have seen it done in similar titles of this genre, however I think with the planet system starbound offers it adds a uniqueness that other titles can not touch.

I will give a few examples to further shed light on my idea. One world could be a platformer imitating Metroid. The player starts off in a laboratory and has to progress through a series of dungeons. Another example would be a world inspired by Doom. You begin at the bottom/top of a humungous structure and have to progress through different floors while killing everything in your way.

There are probably thousands of games that could be imitated with the help of the newly announced director system. Whatever can not be accomplished with this system can be successfully implemented through the help of mods and texture packs. The concept would work well in single player and multiplayer game modes.

What do you guys/gals think of this idea?

Feel free to add your own unique ideas below. They do not even have to be relevant to my idea.

So.. What's the actual idea? To mimic other games? You haven't really made it clear at all what you're trying to suggest here. Also if mimicking other games is your suggestion, I can't say I support that even remotely. As you pointed out, we have mods to do that, putting that in to the base game may even cause legal issues for Chucklefish.

I'm sure modded worlds with quest and whatnot would flood the internetz when the director mode is out.

    and that makes me moist.

While that sounds cool, I think the planets themselves just wouldn't work out as well due to that there is no field of vision effect in the game. So take that large building for Doom world, you would be able to see where everything was right from the get go for the most part.

That would be dependant on how you build the structure. In doom there really is no way to tell where you are due to the lack of vision whether it be to the first person aspect or the lighting. A simple way to imitate this would be making big rooms that are completely dark. The room/immediate area only lights up when you enter it.
This idea is not intended for stock gameplay. It would be community created content via just plain old vanilla creativity or mods. It is in no way meant to replace anything within the current game. It is an avenue for people to take that beat the game and are looking for other ways to enjoy it.

Riighhtt, I think I see what you're getting at. You just phrased it like a suggestion which threw me off. Personally, I agree with @MyLittleBurger in that the game doesn't lend itself to something like DOOM, Metroid however I can see being done in the future.

As he just mentioned, this isn't a suggestion for the base game, so it doesn't belong in suggestions.

I believe the suggestion forum is more for content/mechanics you want added into the original game. If in fact the suggestion forum is used for server ideas and building ideas then I would rather see the idea get more fleshed out with the help of the community before actually submitting it to that section.

I'm sorry, but I can't really see this idea working very well at all. The concept is interesting, but to make it possible to build imitations of other games inside one game, you need an incredibly robust game engine and editing system to handle that. The best example I can think of is Starcraft 2, which has custom maps that vary vastly and in many different ways from the original game, but that has the coding prowess of Blizzard behind it, and even that sounds like it would be dwarfed by what you're talking about.

It's not impossible, but I'm very doubtful that it will happen.

While going into such detail would be cool, I also think it is very difficult.

I am talking about a more simplistic tribute to the games on the planets. Like my example with doom. You make it so when the player spawns on the world make the spawn point underground. Hang a sign that explains the rules of the planet. No breaking blocks Guns only etc. It is up to the player to follow the rules and navigate the planet correctly. With the make quest system that director mode is offering it opens up even more possibilities.

As far as making the decor match the game that is simply done with texture packs. However you should be able to convey the general idea without the need for texture packs with enough thought on how to use blocks that already exist.

Actually, in doom you had a little map that would fill out the more you explored the level (though you could sometimes find a rare powerup that made the entire map visible for that level). And that idea may work to some extent, but the way the light is based/enemies notice you (I'm pretty sure they wouldn't notice you if you weren't in their sector/made noise that made its way to their sector) you would have to make every room be closed off by a door so that the enemies wouldn't see you first (which wouldn't really work out to well in that it would basically be a labyrinth of closed off rooms).
