The game should be more of "wow I need skills to do that" instead of the "I just need higher numbers to survive". I like the idea of having to obtain equipment to reach more difficult planets, but what I don't want is equipment that only shows some new DPS numbers or something. Do you guys know "Metroid"? The equipment doesn't have NUMBERS, it has FUNCTIONS. For example: Mechs should not be used to maximize damage output of the player but to make him able to claim terrains that he couldn't claim before ( how about planets with acid ground everywhere so you have to avoid touching it by sitting in a mech) or to ease things that are difficult or take too much time without (like mining obsidian or magma rocks) ... I was not very impressed by the diamond drill. I expected something awesome but only a change in speed and color is.. well it speaks for itself. And what I do want to mention is that I hate the fact that weapons become useless. When I first played the game and I reached sector beta, I really felt like a damn cool space-soldier with that human steel armor and a nice laser assault rifle I found in a high tech chest while exploring a spacelab of the apex. But the more I unlocked new sectors the more my gun became useless and I sadly had to run around with a selfcrafted crappy hammer that was somehow much stronger than my old LASER RIFLE. It was boring as hell and no guns or cool other things everywhere. This is why I hate that MMO-stlye weaponsystem made of numbers and nothing more because it doesn't matter what KIND of weapon you use, it only matters how big the numbers are. This is also a reason why Starbound feels like same difficult all the time no matter where you go, because you always have access to weapons and armore that make you as strong as you need to be for the monsters in that sector. So what I want so say: game feels the same with no feeling of progression all the time plus lvl 10 planets are just as difficult as lvl 1 planets are and this will not change as long as the weapon and armor status points system is in the game. What I really recommend is a system like the one in the Metroid series. Armors and Weapons should not have numbers, they should have skills and different functions to be able to reach new planets and environments. EDIT: This would also solve the problem with endgame content things because there is no endgame that way. No best armor means no "I don't need to look for new ones anymore". Same for weapons because they wouldn't have stats, only functions. Example: ATM my character has the impervium hammer and armor, best weapon and armor ingame. No need to search for others because no matter what I find, my hammer and armor is better. Even though I recently found a rocket launcher on a level 10 planet there's no need to use. So I quit playing. Normally I'd instantly use the rocket launcher but wtf no it's not even half as strong as my crappy hammer. See? Game forces me to use things I don't like because of the stupid stat-system. Game tells me "no Mippy you have nothing more to do here". And I really do not like hammers, especially not in space games. I WANNA USE MY ROCKETS AND LAZORS The only thing I do ATM is hanging around with some friends in our base online, playing with instruments or just chatting.
So when you go off to start gathering ores when you find gold your thinking "Yay now i can make 50 clocks and make endless powered rails that don't really help me! And don't forget those MANY potions that contain gold". I don't mean to be sarcastic but do you really search for iron and gold after getting diamonds? I know that when i get full diamond armour i have a clock and a few potions and i doubt that rails will help with the ender dragon.
So your best weapon is an impervium hammer? Not only do the 1 handed swords do more dps together if you had done some searching you would have the stuff I have including 2 2500 dps laser pistols a sniper with 3000 and an rpg with 4000 dps. And before that i had a massive death hammer with 3500 dps that damages blocks (I use it over diamond drill) The game is in beta and they need to change stuff but there are mini-bosses and dungeons so it isn't as black and white as you say
You forget that minecraft is not only about defeating the rather senseless enderdragon. It's sandbox and there are thousands of things to do and all I can say is everything candlesayshi said is absolutely right. In minecraft every item you find feels like a price you won, no matter what, because everything is usefull in every state of the game.
Well when i have stacks of diamonds and have played around with mod packs forgive me for finding gold ore a bit useless
Well, I don't care about swords with such hilarious range that you can't even hit an enemy without being hit yourself. And why more DPS if it's not needed? 2 hits from my hammer and every enemy is gone. Sure you can be proud of your two pistols but I bet they shoot so damn slow and use so damn much energy that you have to switch after 2 or 3 seconds of firing if you want enough energy to be left for your techs. And the sniperrifle ? A sniper rifle is no sniper rifle if it doesn't shoot high velocity bullets. I rather used them as Shotgun than sniper rifle because of the slow bulletspeed. The hammer you are speaking of does not work the way you describe it, drills are much better to destroy blocks plus I don't care about melee weapons that shoot ugly bones that destroy my furniture if I have laserguns which can be used safely in every area. The minibosses and dungeons look all the same. I played about 150 hours and found less then 10 different "dungeon" settings. Actually they are not even dungeons because there are no bosses or cool things to find inside (besides the hightech-chests that are damn rare) So? Beta is beta, that's right. But there are few things that really need to be changed.
Endgame makes me unhook from the game. So we can make whatever is the top tier now 4 tiers under the actual best. These 4 tiers WONT BE CRAFTABLE They are random drops. With adjetives. So you have to search for the one you want. Would it take so much time? Yes, and that's what I want. Spend my time searching for my stuff because I can't craft it.
I mean machine pistols and how many snipers have you gotten because i haven't seen a sniper that doesn't insta-hit. Also my swords go about 4 or 5 blocks and 1 hit kill everything. And the fact you found only 10 dungeons (or do you mean types because they have to make each individual one and they are pretty big)? I found 30 in 100 hours and despite the pathetic drops i still die fighting all the guys in a large prison and come back for more
I meant less than 10 types of dungeons, not the number of dungeons I found. And I've found DOZENS of dungeons. Can't see it anymore, every time the same. machine pistol or laser pistol, no matter. Don't know what kind of over-sniper rifles you did find but the ones I find in all the time I played did take 5 to 10 shots to defeat a random alien. I even found sniper rifles that shoot bullets which fly slower than the character can walk so wtf? Every gun I find on level 10 planets does about 2500 dps, no matter what. sniper, pistol, shotgun, rocket launcher, all the same dps with slow traveling bullets and this is why it's useless to search for them as they all do the same dps and act the same, except shotguns with spreading bullets. My hammer does 4000 dps (CRAFTED BY ME) does more damage than any uniqe (purple) gun that I've found in the game. The only gun that is different from others that I found is a unique grenade launcher with 4500 dmg per hit, but it has a firing speed of 0,48 or something and depletes all of my energy with one shot. I don't even have it in my inventory.
The guns were designed to be weaker because they have the advantage of range and both my swords do 3000 dps. I think you mean the missile type guns whch I have found a few of and are more meant to use before engaging a enemy so you fire a wave of bullets. They stay like mini-missiles for a few seconds then go super quick
Yep, this is what I meant. But it's a little too useless for me, I don't like it to block one of my quickslots for a gun that I only use to do the first shot, because the second one wont hit. I know that they are intended to be lower in damage than melee weapons but honestly they are way too weak. Most of the guns don't even knock the aliens back so you have to keep running backwards. This is not how a battle of Spacepirates and Aliens should be.. In 90% of all the battles when I use guns and run backwards because they don't knock enemies back, I suddenly run into other Aliens spawned behind me. That's the point where I always told myself "Nope.. that's crap. Where's my hammer?" And for now and as long as this is not fixed, all my guns remain safely in my ship locker so awesome
I know right? If someone comes up and stabs you in the chest you can survive. If someone walks up and fires a shotgun at you... I hate the missile guns although my assault riffle 1 hit kills so much stuff i have to keep it
Just 5 minutes ago I found another unique grenade launcher at a level 10 magma planet. I laughed a little bit. 1200 DPS, 300 energy per shot, firing speed 0,37. Deleted it instantly. Nothing unique about this thing.
I believe that problem with high tier stuff is that they haven't been balanced yet. As for guns, the only ones that seem to do some decent ammount of damage so that they can be used the same way that the weapons I can find on that sector are delta sector guns. Also straight projectiles don't seem to have an advantage at all atm, some other do though, like the plasma shotgun due to the bouncing projectiles, or the grenade launcher, cause the grenade act more like floating mines that explode after a while.
