Details are very nice, and in some regards they can be quite appreciable, but there comes a point where you have to consider whether or not players will appreciate detail, or content (Or in this case, availability).
Yes, the fact that walking on dirt as opposed to mud as opposed to deep snow causes a different sound is lovely, but people aren't really going to appreciate it very much considering it's simply an intrinsic property that is very easy to take for granted.

Not to mention the vast majority of details are things that could be worked on after the game is released and stuffed into patches el-masse along with small content updates.
Ultimately I feel that people will appreciate simply being able to play the game much longer than they may appreciate the numerous minute details.

I for one enjoy playing skyrim, and playing it with RCRN is great, but I only really appreciate the lack of RCRN when it's not there, not so much the details when it is (After using it for about a week).

Realistic Colors Real Nights...or something to that degree. Basically a blend of shaders (And later on in development, a lot of other visual tweaks like weather effects and so forth) that made the game a lot more interesting and beautiful/sinister depending on the location and time :p

I don't doubt people will appreciate the little things, but it's a matter of; Would you rather have the game in a month and have little details patched in over time, or have the game in 3 months and eventually have more details patched in when additional content is released?

Google is your friend, I just typed in RCRN, and the first thing that comes up? Realistic Colours and Real Nights--Skyrim Nexus. It's a Skyrim Mod.

    Edit: Damn, I was beat.

Or, or... there's also the part that when the game comes out does not affect whether or not it will exist, so if it comes out 2 months later for the "little things" you get to play it anyways.

A lot of people are honestly starting to sound extremely whiny, you cannot have both perfection and a quick release, get over it, it's done when it's done. There are hundreds of thousands of other games out there, right now.

It's OK if this game does not get released in 2012 :) I would rather get a polished game rather than a rushed game with many flaws in it that has to be fixed in future updates. They can delay it all they want. Just not too long like all the way to the end of 2014. Lol.

Hahah, yeah. What person in the world was ever like "oh man, I wanted to play this one game, like right now, then EA was all like 'here you go.' And you wanna know the best part? The game was f**king broken, and it was AWESOME!!!!!"?

Who is asking for both perfection and quick release? I'm simply pointing out that perfection is impossible and details may not be appreciated by everyone, or at least for an extended period of time.
As tiy says, the game is the sum of its parts. But little details like chests opening and closing when you open them are cool, but frankly unnecessary. I recall playing minecraft alpha where any number of minute details had not been added, and when little things were added they were interesting for a short span of time, but thereafter they simply became "a nice touch" nothing more.
I played the game for its gameplay, not its details. There were no hidden temples to find, world bosses to kill or rare resources to discover in order to create enchanted items or potions, simply a massive world to be explored and whatever you could imagine to be built.

Ultimately it's his game. His magnum opus , his dream realized, so it all comes down to him and I respect his integrity for not compromising his vision. But I would also caution him that most players are fickle and minute details however amazing will likely be lost on the masses.

I can tell you that it will not be lost on me, and I would assume I'm not the only one. It may not matter to one person, but to another it could be their favorite aspect of the game. As an Indie game, the focus is on the game, as a reflection of the developer's self, not simply a game tailored to what the community wants. Take Braid or Super Meat Boy for examples. The game he is making is the game he always wanted, the perfect game for him. Indie games have different goals than big studio production games, and if the detail is what he wants in his game, then it is what he should put in the game, because ultimately, he should not compromise his dream for the "masses" as you say.

This is exactly something I've said before. He should not compromise his vision, but do you recall how many complained about minecraft's graphics at first? Not a few, to be sure. Until the craze really started, many (ignorant) people dismissed the game on its appearance alone.

As I've quoted from tiy before "the sum of it's parts". Though not everyone has the mental capacity to appreciate each individual picture within the mosaic.

Hehehe, "seeing" and "Understanding" are two entirely different things. At least attempting to educate others couldn't hurt, not sure how much good it would do though:geek: .

Oh I see Kriegson, you were simply coming from the "people are impatient idiots" perspective.
I believe we can agree on that.

At any rate I could really care less if the angry testosterone charged 13 year olds get pissy about waiting two more weeks if it means the game is just that much better.

Well, not only that, but also that frankly I doubt many people outside the fanbase will appreciate all the work that goes into it. Say, if a date was posted on steam for the 1st of january, only for it to change to some time in march. Most people who didn't know what Tiy was doing would probably assume something overly negative, as opposed to appreciating the extra work he's putting into the game.

Gonna get it when it comes out, doesn't matter when. JEEBUS I CAN'T WAIT THO. I keep coming on here and wasting time. I really need to get back to my writing. I'll be relieved when my crazy excitement will calm down and I won't constantly think about it.

I think this is completely the oppisite of most people on this forum. Speaking for my self i crave the uniqueness of this game and its details. Its about time some one put this much into a game...

I hope it comes out last day of the year. Yay for a dec 31 birthday

Oh sure the people on the forum are probably going to appreciate the details starbound! But consider that in most games, only a tiny fraction of the populace actually participates on the forums. Likewise, I would imagine the majority of the fanbase fit within that demographic, which is to say others that will play the game will probably pick up the game out of curiosity and end up loving it, albeit without an understanding of its origins or its creator, and his vision.

There's nothing wrong with that of course, but I find that with a better understanding of the dev team comes a high appreciation of the product. For instance I love the firefall team (red5) and due to how open they have been every step of the way, and how receptive they have been to testers, I have a FAR greater appreciation of them and of firefall than say....Age of conan. Where the devs hardly spoke to us, much less acknowledged our presence as anything more than population numbers on their servers.

Every tweak they make in firefall is new and interesting, and I appreciate what the team did in creating it (Especially considering many changes were based on community feedback, and their own vision). What few tweaks there were in age of conan were incredibly minute and utterly disconnected from the playerbase.
