Yeah, but the point is, even though it took 12 years for Blizzard to make StarCraft 2, it still ended up being one of the best-selling and best games of all time. I mean, people make livings playing it competitively. So, if it takes longer, it should mean the game will be better. (I know, a lot of times it doesn't). Also, I've seen a lot more developers lately using the motto "It's done when it's done" which is a pretty good approach for video games, because a rushed game is a bad game.

Also, for a kid that young, it definitely feels like 12 years anyway.

Are you sure they actually worked on it for the whole 12 years?

I didn't say they worked on it for 12 years, I just said it took 12 years for them to finally get around to making and finishing the game.

I'm not sure, but does each race have its own story line? or quest line rather.. If so, the devs don't even have all of the races implemented yet so I think it would take awhile to implement certain quests for each race. I'd love for it to be finished by Christmas time, but I can see it taking longer, which is fine for me.

The story is the same for all races. And side quests are mostly procedurally generated. Hope this helped.

    Helps a lot, thanks.

Although I do believe they might make some post release stuff be race specific quests. At any rate, they haven't vetoed the idea. I think it'd be neat, but it won't be in the initial release.

Thanks, I guess. I want Starbound to launch as much as the next person, but threads like these are just downers. I guess in the end its my own fault for reading the thing in the first place! On the other hand, its going to be double awesome if Tiy pulls a release from under his hats and proves this thread wrong. I'm not big on optimism normally, but at this point I imagine most of the core system is done, it just comes down to content and bugs. If we don't get the game before January rolls around, not much you can do about that, but I think they've still got a shot (assuming devs are working as hard as I think they are, they seem way more dedicated than us forum goers I think.)

Mmm, Tiy said some stuff about the progress on IRC. I'm a professional Tiy stalker.
Seems most stuff is already done and they're just adding extreme levels of detail.

<@Tiyuri> It's true that the end of the year is a goal that may or may not be reached, because we are perfectionists
    <@Tiyuri> however
<@Tiyuri> the game is so far along, so many systems are done, its essentially very playable already
<@Tiyuri> theres no chance of it fizzling out
<@Tiyuri> we just put insane levels of detail into everything
<@Tiyuri> and i dont do videos on anything until that insane level of detail is realised

<@Tiyuri> to give another example of our attention to detail
<@Tiyuri> every single material in the game gives off its own footstep sounds when walked on
    <@Tiyuri> or jumped on
<@Tiyuri> a largeeeee number of objects in the game make sounds
<@Tiyuri> when someone accesses a chest, it opens in front of them, when they leave the chest screen, it closes
<@Tiyuri> a lot of objects are interactive just for the sake of being interactive
<@Tiyuri> see a gong in an avian temple? you can go and bang it
<@Tiyuri> every block and every object has a description
    <@Tiyuri> you can examine everything
<@Tiyuri> and whilst its very easy to say that these things aren't essential, just release the game already.
<@Tiyuri> I disagree, I think putting this all together gives you more than the sum of it's parts

<Arpege> Can you only beam to planets Tiyuri, or can you beam into an asteroid belt as well? Just a bunch of large chunks of rock floating about in space with rare materials in them, but extremely dangerous and difficult to move from asteroid to asteroid
<Arpege> Sort've like sky islands but in space :B
<@Tiyuri> by release youll be able to beam onto planets (done already), moons (done already), asteroids (not done, but actually very easy to do, just havent gotten around to it), and ships in flight (done already)
    <@Tiyuri> and possibly some more
    <@Tiyuri> also friends ships
    <@Tiyuri> you can go there
<WarStalkeR> Tiyuri: you said ships in flight... Then it means possibly an space ship battles too? :)
    <@Tiyuri> not for release
<@Tiyuri> but i have an idea on how space ship battles will work
    <@Tiyuri> for post release

<@Tiyuri> I need to do a video of the building system

Thank you for posting this. This gave me a lot of information I have been craving: what they are doing right now. Since they seem to be done with the core game and right now are doing severe polishing, I have hope that they will release it by the end of the year. It seems Tiy doesn't want to output and amazing game, he wants to output a game so mindblowingly epic and detailed that we will be unable to fully comprehend and appreciate every little detail put into it. I think it is great that he is adding all of these small things like being able to ring a gong or sit in a chair. Despite these actions not being necessary, they add an air of more freedom and atmosphere to the game. There are very few games that attempt to make nearly, if not all of the things in the game interactive. This is just stunning news. :proper:

I'm thinking/hoping the game comes out in February at the latest. Would be really great if it came out around christmas or new years though.

I absolutely love that you will be able to interact/examine almost everything. I love being able to do all the little things like that.

Tiy seems to suffer from the same mindset as I have before. I'm a perfectionist myself, and in my line of work I always took just too damn long to do stuff because I'd fiddle with it striving for perfection.
Here's a hint: perfection is impossible.

If they spend more time fiddling with it and constantly push the release... well... shame.

I'd really just prefer a working game with the prospect of obtaining bug patches for free and big content updates in the future for money. Bugs will be found every time software is released into the wild, no exceptions, so it's simply not plausible to postpone it that much for debugging, especially if he says it works in it's current state.

Ah well the wait continues, but passively now, as the excitement has long faded.

He's not ironing every single bug though, just adding loads of little details.
