I'd have to say I believe they are trying their best to release before the end of the year, but then again, I know if they could have it ready by next week, they would. It's all down to this: While predicting how long it is to put in features is not super hard to do, and they probably have an "I expect the game will have all the content we want in it by ____" date, debug is an uncertain process, because 1. you can't possibly predict how many bugs there will be 2. even though you could probably be decently accurate at predicting how long it will take to fix a single bug, the fix might even reveal or even create more bugs and 3. some bugs may be due to a flaw in the engine itself, and unfortunately require rebuilding the engine. 4. some bugs aren't even technically "bugs," but cases where a certain function is really eating up memory or processing time, and require clever solutions to fix the lag or crashes caused by certain circumstances. This means sitting, staring at the screen, simply toiling over "ok, what alternate way can i code this so it doesn't kill the pc, whats a more memory efficient process, or less time consuming way to calculate this." until eventually you figure out some shortcut or other optimization. Simply put, there is no way to know or predict how long any of that may take. It may take a couple of days, or it may take months.
But on the term of "no news in a while" there's a lot of news recently from twitter, its just in a much more compact, not-enough-time-for-an-article form. Its still the same magnitude as what we've seen on the main page, just stripped of all detail, because they would rather work on the game than take the time to write up an entire post.

Also, if I may post this as completely speculatory (as in don't take this as fact, or reply with "nuh uuuhhhhh")
I think all they have left is certain sets of items and the last two races and their lore. From what I understand, most or all of the code is done, and written in such a way that all the items and races they want to add simply take filling out the spritesheet and writing a config file. I think they might still be working on the melee weapon generator, but what I heard might also only mean that they have to draw the art for the generator to use. So essentially, I think that all that they have left is designing items and the last two races. The races have specific gear, so that means there's a lot of content to be designed, but as far as the code goes, I think they're finished. Tiy did say that they add things all the time, just whenever they think of something new, but they are pragmatic, and I'm sure won't push the release date back just to add more and more.
I think once they're done with those things, and have a stable, bug free build, it will be released, and anything else they want to add will come after, not before.

once again, this is pure speculation (well, speculation based on a few facts, but speculation nonetheless) so please don't respond with something like "youre wrong" in regards to this second half.
EDIT: unless you actually do know exactly how much they have left to do, and you aren't an asshole about it, that is.

Guild Wars 2 was being developed for like 5 years, and the only info they gave us for 4 of those years was "When it's ready." After those 4 years they announced it as "2012: Year of the Dragon." They announced the actual date a mere 2 months before releasing it. There was rarely any updates for the first few years about anything.

It's a cool story, bro, I know. But the main point is that they gave themselves "Till the end of the year" basically, to finish the game. It could be December 31st release date. It could technically be a Jan 1st, 2013 release date too. When it gets down to it, the difference between "2012" and "2013" can be as small as a second. Even if it doesn't come out 2012, they're constantly working on it. The longer they work on it, the better it'll be. (Hopefully) Also inb4 Duke Nukem Forever.

  15. But it's not really all that calm... Back in summer, there were big chunks of days where nothing was announced. Not even a tweet. (At least that I saw.)
Now in the past week or so, we've gotten an interview, two more possible races, and talk of melee weapons!

The fact that the devs are just starting on any kind of game content(such as the melee weapons) leads me to believe the game will not be released until next year. If it were to be released in december, all the main game content would have already been added and it would only be down to bugfixing/tweaking/balancing now.

They likely have the basic mechanics for the melee weapons in already, as they have shown some examples of how they will work.

My guess for the recent thread is that they just want to be able to generate a lot of melee weapons as they already are with ranged weapons.

The mass adding of items is probably one of the last steps. Building the engine is the hard part. From what they have said, it seems like adding items it simple and easy so at this point they are probably just churning out weapons and other assorted items and slapping them into the game. They built the framework that allows weapons to function and to be added, now they just need to dump enough weapons or weapon parts in to keep things interesting.

i was unaware that updates were a measure of how far in progress a game was.
by this account, it means most games are made in less than a couple of months.

    there's a flaw in this logic >_>

  20. We've never announced a solid date, it's just that "end of the year 2012" is currently the best estimate we can give. Sorry.

As for front page updates, Tiy mentioned making a space travel one soon and I know he wants to showcase the gravity gun building system, too. It's sort of crunch-time though. Everyone's working really really tirelessly on getting things functioning perfectly.

Some people have made handy public Twitter lists, too: https://twitter.com/Naxum/starbound/members
