I don't think the game should bury the sci-fi.

That would require a fair bit of code... the tool would need each function, and would need to detect which world object you're trying to target, to choose the most appropriate function, the proper effect field size, etc.

Why do people keep saying this? I don't understand... Your using pickaxes because it's only the first 3 tiers of the game. There are 10 tiers. There is a story line (not yet in), you are going to progress and get better tools later on in the game. Using drills right off the bat wouldn't give much sense of progression now would it?

I can't like your post more then once, so this is me quoting your post, so I can artifically like it more, because it's awesome.

I like the pickaxes, but I'm a Glitch, I love medieval things! :) There will be more sci-fi stuff later as stated, if you don't like the lore of the game, mod it so that all pickaxes are drills instead? It's not that hard to mod this game you know, take the initiative! Help all the other people bemoaning the dreaded pickaxes, because :gasp: you have a spaceship, obviously you should be mining planets from orbit, this way you don't even have to beam down and you just see nothing but your spaceship all day long.

You know, I am surprised no one has suggested race based tools yet. Glitch could get the picks, well apex get laser drills.

I don't disagree with you completely, It makes sense to have futureistic things. But I for one am a fan of how the game breaks the common mould of most games, where in minecraft, there is no higher tech, and in sci fi games, there is no lower tech. Im sure theyll add on, but this for now I like because its the first game to bridge the gap where you can have both old and new in a game

I understand that this is a beta and all, not everything is how it should be just yet. I also understand that your just starting out in the game, you're not going to have any high tech things on you to start with.

But I do agree, this is a Sci-Fi game, and we should feel sci-fiey when we play, because right now, I feel like I'm playing Terraria pre-hard mode edition without the magical goodies and the schizo tech far harder to progress on.

So yea, I know this is a beta, but when we do actually get into game, hopefully this low-tech tier thing won't last as long....

Interesting idea, but I believe the Devs are avoiding anything and everything that is racial only. :) Then again if they all operated the same way, and they just looked different, I could see that. You could totally swap weapons with someone for the look and feel of their race's choice of digging tool.

I'm fine with the melee weapons, but I agree that the Matter Manipulator should not be replaced by mining picks. I'd rather put build copper/iron/etc version of this device. Even better if there can be ways to augment it further (mining/chopping/tilling functions). I hate to say it, but using old fashioned tools in a sci-fi game seems a tad silly... It really makes it hard to tell people that the game is more than Terraria in space. I'd be fine with having to build special manipulators to replace the axe and hoe... but the MM should get more attention in this game.

Although, I'll be satisfied if the game offers me MM upgrades alongside the picks.

Some of the melee weapons have been cool, others are just old fashioned. I had a pretty cool Tesla Coil (it was basically a spear). I do hope to see more guns, especially with weapon modifiers like the melee weapons.

Well if they worked different I think that could be a good thing. It would help define the races better and help them play differently in an aspect of the game you will be spending a lot of time in. You can also buy the blue prints of other races if you find a shop.

A communist-based civilization with lazer weapons? How terrifying in prospect!

Back on topic, I think only the first tier should include crappy and primitive weapons, and pickaxes. After all, it is the tutorial sector, where everything is being introduced to you. Guns shouldn't be in it, only primitive weapons like bows and basic swords.

I'm definitely not a fan of the stone age equipment at the beginning of the game. I mean, there is low tech, and then there is ME KRUG MINE NOW. Now I'm not just complaining, I actually have a suggestion.

What if your ship had a computer in it that was the one giving you the tutorials and whatnot? It could also guide you in creating useful equipment that fits the sci-fi setting, while using the materials available. Such as a drill with an iron bit. You would bring the iron up to the ship, along with some pixels, and the 3D printer would produce a drill. That way, it's actually drills that are considered low-tech, when you would normally use high powered lasers and suped-up matter manipulators if you were properly equipped. This would still offer the sense of progression without making you feel like the most backwards space traveler in the universe.

One problem I have with not introducing guns till beta sector (apart from the topic of this thread) is that the alpha boss is flying. You kind of need a range weapon to deal with it. Yes you have the hunting bow, but that is just one weapon. Fights are more fun when you can select form an array of different weapons to try.

He's a placeholder bro, they just wanted to show off a boss battle.

and no, this man is a liar, he is a liar liar pants because I've looked over and through more planets for a gun than a Chinese phone book has Chins.

That's b/c it's a re-skinned Terraria and people are so blinded by the changes that they can't see that 90% of the game is Terraria.

I've played this game for 60 hrs and maxed out 2 characters and I've never seen an avian ship.

90% of the game is mining, crafting, and vanity.. How is this not obvious?
