I don't think the game should bury the sci-fi.

My big critic of the beta so far is that I mine with a pickaxe. The description says it'd "so last milienia" and I have to agree. It's clearly the future. I flew in with a space ship so why am I mining with a pickaxe and not some kind of jackhammer, or power drill. I would even accept a laser pickaxe. It's more then just the pick. Your also using a stone axe, stone hoe, wooden torches, a bow and arrow, you even craft your weapons on an anvil. I know things get more high tech in latter in the game, but I think that leading with pickaxes gives the wrong first impression.

Also, where the hell are my guns?
I'm finding "crappy slappers" when i kill people that have sniper rifles!

I think it's because you're a desperate fugitive. You grabbed what tech you could and ran. That didn't include a laser drill.

I believe the mid-endgame has much more sci-fi stuff.

You're someone who is on their own with little to no supplies to help you survive. You lack anything except for a few things, your ship, and the matter manipulator.

How do you expect to make an amazing jackhammer, laser pickaxe, drill, or whatever when you don't have the necessary resources to do such a thing? You're starting from the bottom and working your way up, my friend. This may be a sci-fi-ish game, but that doesn't mean we all start with 'OMG AWESOME' stuff. You're starting from the bottom and working your way up.

I don't find because of story to be that compelling of a reason. Your ship could have included a laser drill. It included a matter manipulator and a 3D printer.

The king could of also gave you a sack of gold and top tier equipment when he sent you out to save the world in that RPG.

But no, you've got a wooden sword. Suck it up and use what you did start your adventure with to eventually get the stuff you actually want.

well if im not mistaken the highest tier of pickaxe is only diamond right now. i wonder if the tools made out of aegissalt, cerulium etc will be more high-tech

The 3D printer has no saved memory. The ship is probably fresh out of the factory, by all indication. The Matter Manipulator seems to be a very basic and universal personal device. Something everyone in that era is expected to have, like a screwdriver almost. Regardless, it and the ship itself count as basic essentials, so it's not that much of a stretch for the characters to have spent every scrap of currency they had on getting said essentials and getting out of Dodge.

Pretty sure I saw in-game mention of a chainsaw somewhere. I think the higher tech tools are on the to-do list, and something you develop into.

Given that there are, basically, supposedly 10 tiers planned, and we've seen like 3 and a half (I dont think X-sector counts), aren't you basically just complaining that you want stuff thats not implemented out?

Not to mention that there is a very easy way to get guns. Just go to a damn gun vendor and buy some. Drops are messed up at the moment. Its not hard.

Also not to mention that laser swords that fire bolts of energy are pretty high tech.

As is the ability to fly because of gravity manipulation.

It's about progress yes, but that doesn't mean you need to start with a spinning wheel. You can easily have advancement moving from cheap and weak tech into more advanced and powerful tech. It's not that I think you should start the game with top tier equipment. I am saying that the bottom tier equipment should fit the setting.

I was kind of expecting the diamond pick to be a laser pick because you know diamond are used in lasers.I really hope they add in more high tech tools. Rather then a aegissalt pick we could get an aegissalt drilling platform or a cerulium mining charge launcher. It's something hope is planed.

That is a way to get guns but it's not easy I've explored a few dozen planets and only found two basic sword shops let alone a gun shop.

  13. BitHorizon

The problem isn't the starting items. The problem is that a gun designed to manipulate the very matter that an object is made of is outperformed by the first tool that you acquire, which is a pickaxe. That makes no sense. The matter manipulator is a staple of Starbound and should be able to be upgraded instead of thrown away for a "So last millennia" pickaxe.

I like the pickaxes and axes, that is all.

Agreed in full. Having the pickaxes be a filler/requirement that is upgraded, which in turn upgrades the Matter Manipulator would be ideal I think.

    ya im with ya.
Either matter M should be upgrade able
or we should get some sweet mining tools later on

    BlvckLotus Poptop Tamer

i've said this is other threads but upgrade it with what. i doubt your guy has an extensive knowledge of it's inner workings and it's probably on the same level of tech as the time period so i doubt an average intelligence man or woman could upgrade a piece of equipment he doesn't know anything about

    Athauxan Pangalactic Porcupine

I'm going to wager a guess and say once all the tiers are actually done, the highest tier tool will be a beefed up form of the matter manipulator. My guess is the progression will be something like Pickaxes -> Auto Drills -> Mining Laser -> beefed up M.M. I highly doubt we'll be stuck with just pickaxes for all 10 tiers of the game.

  19. Crosburn

    Crosburn Void-Bound Voyager

I agree completely, you start out with a handheld laser that can rip things to pieces from 30 feet away, and an upgrade is...... a rock tied to a stick?

  20. Bandethor

    Bandethor Pangalactic Porcupine

you managed to escape from something so i imagine you left in a hurry and are now using the tools that you can make with what you can find
