"Poor Discipline"? Development started almost two years before preorders started. Considering the frequency of updates has increased dramatically since then, I wouldn't say they are slowing down any time soon.

Have you ever developed a video game with a group of people full time before, where each one lived in a different country? Didn't think so.

Before you insult someone, at least get your facts straight.

I can see where you're coming from. Having been one of the few who actually followed Starbound way before when it was just announced (king penguin picture, anyone?), I can tell you with the utmost certainty that they aren't getting lazier. If anything, the rate of updates has changed dramatically after preorders. Before it was around one or two a month. Now it's weekly. But let me ask you this: after reading all of Tiy's posts (both on his twitter and on his forum account and reddit), can you honestly say you don't trust him? That man has a good work ethnic that isn't diminishing. The lack of updates from him say just that. What do you think he's doing? Mashing on his keyboard, obviously!

EDIT: neil_v, don't like my comment! I'm refuting your argument!

What do you guys think of maybe having a modular ship design? One where you could pick and choose different sections to create a unique ship. I can imagine some really cool ship layouts.

Tiers could be used to separate number of sections and more unique designs at higher levels. Could even design a dungeon around finding plans to make new sections for the ship.

I like the new designs. Even if people go ahead and mod in a ship anyways, players that don't want to mod their game can still enjoy these new ships.

Let's continue this outside. We'll settle this... WITH FISTICUFFS!!!

Great idea! Modular ship design would be hell to implement, but it would also result in an increased variety of player-owned ships, and would add even more freedom to the game. Of course, there should be some limits, otherwise soon everyone's gonna be toting around life-sized Death Stars.

Even with the standard ship size, there is very little reason to create an on-world base. I think the story needs to be changed.

It would make more sense to have the ship damaged beyond repair forcing an emergency ejection in a life-pod which will strand you on the nearest planet capable of supporting life. Once on the planet, it is your home and there is no way to leave until the first boss is defeated (the ship is not accessible at all). This would create a more 'rogue-like' hardness because you just have no idea how volatile the starting planet might be...

In addition, the quest for the first boss should be re-worked and split out into multiple quests:

    1. finding an indigenous race and village and be forced to listen to tales of a treacherous God that subjugates them and forbids technology. They will give you a seat from a ship to sit on while listening (first clue)
    2. Set up trust with the village by doing multiple transactions for things they need, like giving them food from your farm, rare metals you got while mining, animal hides / meats from hunting, etc. They will reward you with useless parts to them, but eventually you will discover that they have all the necessary parts to build a ship.
    3. Final village quest, locate something precious which will only drop from defeating a random mini-boss (they will reward you with the ship FTL core)
    4. Final planet quest, activate the ship which immediately begins broadcasting a distress signal that the first boss responds to (Kill the boss, liberating the people, and begin space exploration)

For helping those people and an incentive to keep the original home base operational, implement a diplomacy status so that for races you encounter you are judged on how helpful you have been. The more helpful, the more money you make from selling goods, etc. Once you get to a new planet, you can begin helping other races you find, and once those races like you enough... you can set the newer planet to your home.

WARNING: (Pointless) Wall of text is following that is maybe hard to read because my english Sucks ;)

I dont care about ship updates, too.
I need content that adds more various gameplay.
I stoped playing this game months ago because there is nothing interesting to do left. And the things that are in the game are NOT Starbound, they are only stupid placeholders to keep people busy and create an illusion of a game.
Ship updates will change nothing, just a nother feature to keep us longer busy.

I can dark remember me, 2 years (or more) ago, Tyu told us he want make his dream game. A dynamical Universe with random Life in it, Npcs giving quests, build up ther towns giving the player ways to grow up his own colonisation, manage resources and keep his folks happy. Trade with other factions or battle them. Be an galactic space trader, or an farmer or industrialist and sell resorces. be an adventurer, a hunter or simple live a normal life in an Npc town.
OK cut! We all know why we preordered this game and follow it for soooo long.

But the devs lost this dream and weastin time to give the playerbase giant placeholders that has nothing much to do with "Starbound the Dream"
Its not all Devs mistake, i cryed for an beta, 98% of the community was crying and the devs must give us something and they did.
But its also not only the communities failure!
Starbound is in development for how long? eh, i dont realy know. I joined this game in late 2011 (i think). I read in the forums and everywhere, peoples says things like "Starbound comes out December 2011 (or was it 12?). On youtube i watched gameplay vids from Starbound! It looks very interesting and very playable! But ther was no realease.
Same for the next year. Devs Promised that the game will "definitly realeased this year (the full game!). We saw more gameplay vids on youtube (from devs and fanmades), the whole World was talking about Starbound and i tould my friends from this Awsome game and i preordered it just to support the devs!

Now its middle 2014, Starbund is out as an early alpha placeholder (thats how it feels like). And my friends laught at me, and il be on shame for supporting CF.
There is still Hope, but progress seams to stagnate.
Moving to an new Office can take a while, but for me it feels like this Game is stagnating since end of 2013.

Its exact the same feeling like it was when EA realeased Sim city, NFS, and Blizzards D3. And all the other games that makes me hype and after realease all the promises devs mede are nothing like Hot Air.
I realy looking up to Grimm Dawn know, but i dont expect very much and i will not fall in Hype because too many indie and AAA Titels in the last years were a big Dissapointment or still early access with no progress in developmet (Folks tale, Planet explorers, Starbound,) <- thats the games i support in the moment and get nothing for it.

Oh and hate me for this, but every time i read about this Pirate game on the front page makes me "hate" CF a little more.

Maby the day will come and Starbound will be realeased, but this day seems so far away that i dont think i will play it, and if i play, it will definitly be an disapointment because i expectet ... no wait, because the devs promised way too much and cant realise it!

    2. Versioning is something handled internally by any company / group. If they want to call it a beta, they'll call it a beta.
    3. Diablo 3 was a complete and polished game when it released.

On the contrary, I see plenty of reason for an on-planet base. It's harder for someone to go on a server with a character that has the same name as your friend and rob you, since you wouldn't keep everything in a ship. Plus, as is, I run out of space in my ship quite easily and end up making it look hideous by ploping storage everywhere. Additionally, I don't like the look of splitting the base ship in half and having a storage, bed, kitchen, and crafting area all in the same room. Also, when I do add all of these things to one room, there's no space for other cosmetic stuff.

Bases on planets can be made much differently than ship bases, and can look cooler. Bases on planets can have traps. Bases on planets can be puzzles. Bases on planets can be communities. Bases on planets can have different gravity. Bases on planets can be hidden. Bases on planets can take up the entire planet.

Have not played since December and this update is not gonna change that.

At least Terraria is getting new substantial content.

Don't get me wrong tho, new/bigger ships are great, but its really just more fluff and that is all we have been getting.

    Bah,its all useless,realy.

An oficial update to ships is rather pointless, when you have comunity members with mods 78 times better(but no Solaire Interstelar Bus trip to Space Praisin has me at crossroads...)

It useless if by mods you can make yer own ship as big and with as many materials as you please,as the build your ship mod or the GIGANTIC ships that have come up.

    A f:love:ck they atleast gave,but a useless f:love:ck anyway.

I'm not at all excited; I'm a bit apprehensive. What is this update going to do to my custom ship?

As soon as I discovered the FCS, I've never looked back.

I don't care if doesn't look lore-friendly and streamlined. I care that it looks like mine.

Yes. This is one of those features that has been talked about since the beginning. Some have been eagerly awaiting this.

Exactly. Ships were so small that you could never fit enough chests, furnaces, anvils, workbenches, etc to truly call it a home. They were mostly just a mode of transport. It was such a problem that larger ship mods became commonplace. Heck, even many servers incorporate some sort of customizable ship mod (often using blocks).

It's a matter of play style and personal preference. Some want to make their ship a home. That allows us to freely change our "home planet" teleporter slot and use it as a temporary base, fuel/ore depot, coal mine, etc.

Others want to reserve one planet as their home base. And that's fine. (Do both, if you want.) Nobody is forcing you to upgrade your ship. Indeed, with a new character you won't have the resources to upgrade your ship. So, at least initially, most players will still feel forced to start with a homebase on a planet.

Personally, I hesitate to go wild with making a huge and very elaborate permanent home on a planet until I find what I consider a "perfect" planet for it. And since this usually takes a while, I prefer to have my base on my ship in the meanwhile.

A bigger ship is useful. And if it's fun to upgrade our tools/weapons/armor through time and effort, why shouldn't it be fun to upgrade our ship in a similar manner?

I don't know about you, but I can find a -ton- of things to do in-game. Though, to be fair, I usually play with one or more mods installed, so I -may- have a few more things to do, things to find, and things to build (perhaps even places to explore) than in vanilla.

Have you tried playing with a bigger ship? It can change the way you play the game. Or, at least, how often you move to and explore a different planet, how often you have to teleport, how you use the teleporter, where you grow your produce, where you place your chests, how you organize your stuff, how much time you waste looking for that stack of glass you made a few days ago, etc.

As for a starship crew, have you taken a look at the Your Starbound Crew mod? There are also mods for improvements to combat, more realistic gravity and movement, etc, etc. Starbound is still in a pre-release beta stage. But, in the meanwhile, mods can (more-or-less) hold me over.

More space, in the non-modded ships. That right there means the world to me.

Though the aesthetics are nice too I suppose.

The ship upgrades look sloppy. It feels like a lazy job done by the devs, but I could be wrong. I'll have to verify my feelings when I try them out for myself. The only thing that I've seen them do was add more similar parts to the ship and stack them up together to make it bigger and have more space. It's complicated why I'm seeing it differently like this. Maybe it's because I'm seeing too many square box-shaped parts on the ships.

Can't but bothered to read this whole thread (looks really bad honestly). New ships would be nice, it's a nice addition and mods are no longer needed. They also won't stop working on it or something, so the thread is pretty much useless.

tl;dr they are already making them, cant stop the gods
