Hype, kickstarting and expectations - why ppl run mad about release dates, beta etc.

This article was a real eye-opener for me. And after follow Starbound and the forums/daily update commentaries for a while, i see a spitting image of this in the fan-group here...

    http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/10/09/how-hype-is-killing-kickstarter

Don't take this as a critisisme of Starbound, its the other way around. But are we, the fans, the supporters, hyping expectations on release dates, beta release - and maybe even content and gameplay - to something Starbound never had intended or ambitions about becoming?

Take "daily updates" - as Tiy has mentioned several times, it has never been a promised event, yet everytime its a day or two off, loads of people start, well... Not saying too pretty things about, trolling, arguing and creating rumours and well... Hype... If we take a step back, im sure we all can see the positive in the missing postings - it simply means the crew is busy - with coding, their lifes and making progress on the game.

Also - now that funding has run as high as it has, the team has the funding to make the game they REALLY dreamed of - maybe even more then they originally planned for. They dont have to rush a release because the money is running short, they dont have to limit them selves to keep a (too) thight schedule, they have the proper time to bugfix, test gameplay, think things through and getting all the smaller tweaks and fixes in place - both for a good, proper beta release, but also for a final release.

So in reality - isn't it the community, the fans that, just maybe, has pushed the release further then otherwise - by being generous and supporting? And in all... Isn't it better with a proper release, then a hurried, unfinished one?

Im just saying... Maybe we should cool it with all the demands for release, updates etc. and let the team work instead...

Starbound will be updated after release...
whether the game is hurried or not, the game will be updated. Betas arent meant to be complete.

I actually wish there weren't daily updates. It went from a game I desperately wanted to play into an amusing but otherwise boring constant influx of surprise reducing monotony. There's no surprise in the game anymore, everything is posted as an update every day and when it comes out, 60-90% of everything in the game (notably the UI and story and classes, of which those are always the biggest and most interesting surprises when first starting a game) has been spoiled and doesn't hold that "wow" factor anymore. It's still cool, sure, but it doesn't really amaze me anymore. They could take a page from Redigit and stick to small spoilers every now and then instead of daily updates.

This is an extremely over exaggerated aspect of the community. Yes, people will demand release from time to time, but it is not common. There are literally more people complaining about complainers than there are people complaining.

Complaining about people complaining just causes more people to complain and causes me to come in and complain so I can try to explain the situation.

If you have a problem with an actual real person you see that is complaining, then talk to them about it with a quote like I am doing right now. Making a thread that is complaining about complainers just doesn't work.

its not as if the dev team is forced to look at people excited for the game's release.

I think he was just trying to get the message out there to chill out. ;)

Andry basicly nailed it. a lot of the "complaining" comes from a "loud minority" as people call it. The starbound community as a whole has always been very patient and understanding overall. You just have a few grubs and weeds here and there tarnishing it

I have not actually seen many people complain about when starbound is coming out, and I have been here since February 2012.
the community is pretty dam good if you ask me, and especially if you compare the cubeworld community with the starbound community.
but there will always be those small groups of people who complain.

To cut my response down short and sweet.

People need to lend a voice to concerns on where they could improve (such as ability to set a date and stick to it), otherwise they never will.
I mean, why settle for less, from people who you support and want to see succeed?

They aren't fragile and made of glass you know.

I can't believe all the people making demands. Creating a game takes time... Especially a complex one like this. I know of games that have been in production way longer than Starbound, yet Starbound seems to be further ahead than them in terms of a finished product. I am extremely happy with the way Chucklefish are doing things. I like seeing teasers on a regular basis, but don't blame the team at all if they are a few days short with putting up a new screenshot.

These type of threads make me sick.

Let's change the mood, I made a gun in Blender:

EDIT: And the fact that the OP said that we're "pushing the release farther" doesn't make much sense.

I did, and the amount of threads like this (just like Miss Andry said) are just people complaining about people complaining, about people complaining ?

I wouldn't really say there's any true complaining here, the general consensus of this thread thus far seems to be that the community needs to take a chill pill, yes. But I think there should always be an open discussion about things like this.
OP is merely discussing and theorizing why people are behaving the way they do on the forums.

It's true however that there are a lot of complain threads. And complain threads about complain threads. And you are complaining about people complaining about people complaining, about people complaining.

Complaining is a part of human nature.

The way he seems to mean it is that by giving them more money and support then they were likely expecting we may have caused them to decide to go above and beyond the original plan. It only make sense if you imagine their were 2 version of the game, the one that they wanted to make and the one they would have to make before funding ran out again. The problem is it's hard to tell if this happened since we have on access to an alternative timeline to see if that is true.

I agree you, I don't think the community funding makes the developers lazy, I think it only motivates them!

I believe he was implying our funding made them more ambitious not lazy, see my above post for how I read it.

True. Personally I don't believe that the funding is delaying the release of the game though. But like you said, we may never know without access to an alternative time-line. ;)
