The Hylotl seem to be a more organic race, in a sense. I thought a Dragon like mount inspired by Japanese lore would be pretty cool. While I am not as good as many other artists in the Starbound community I thought I would share a sketch I came up with. If any other talented Artist would like to make their own rendition of this be my guest. The Ryutatsu are from the Hylotl's homeword. They were domesticated from early times as a method of transportation. They are equally comfortable on ground and in water. What appears to be horns are actually external gills, much like some newts. The Ryutatsu share a tight bond with the hylotl, even going as far as defending their owner to the death.
Aren't Hylotl more or less fish people? If yes, something with a more aquatic aesthetic would probably be their animal-slave-thing of choice. Maybe a frog-ish mount?
Hylotl are actually an amphibian race. They are based of a salamander like creature. I chose this mount because it has a Japanese type feel much like the Hylotl race. So, if Hylotl's are in fact amphibians they would start their life in water but move to land as adults. Some amphibians need more water than others as adults. Although the creature they are based off of does spend the majority of it's adult life in water. Axolotl
I agree with his aspect, trying to lean more towards japanese folk lore and such. But the Hylotl being land and water capable, they might go for an amphibian mount too. Like something resembling a salamander or a newt. They're fast, agile, cute and they're amphibious. Also if you're going to come up with a mount for a single race then might as well give up now because people will want you to look at the other races instead of focusing on one.
I don't think Aquias' post was in opposition to yours, but rather in agreement; if each race is to have their own mount, it's reasonable to expect threads expressing ideas for specific mounts. In any case, I'd be down for cruisin' around on a giant newt!
Nice sketch, you could make some improvements, I suggest you scan it and use photoshop to go over the lines and color it in ^ Kawaaiiiiii (Cute in japanese)
I think the idea of hylotl mounts are awesome. The hylotl pond armor actually states that they would ride giant fish into battle. as well, the hylotl would not want to have a mount that originated on land, since themselves as a race probably originated from an ocean planet. I would say a giant salamander like creature would do as an excellent mount for this species, or maybe even a water drake of sorts?

Oh, I read your "exactly" as disappointed / defensive. Someone seriously needs to come up with a way to type tone. Anywho, pardon my assumption.
I think that your design for this creature is good. However, to give it more of a Hylotl feel you might want to add a bit more aquatic characteristics, since they are most water-based creatures. Good drawing though!
I really think it would be cool to have a lot of animal mounts, in game or mods. Although, the Hylotl are most peaceful, so I'd imagine they might just have derpy frogs! xD Cool nonetheless
