Hydroponics Bays

I propose having a placed piece of furniture that would act as a small plot of tilled land for the purpose of growing crops indoors

not all planets are good for growing foodstuffs

nor do you want to have to brave the creatures outside just to gather or plant your crops

So i say we need craftable or found Hydroponics Bays that you could plant your crop seeds in and grow them that way

A Hydroponic bay would be a bit like this below

    please excuse my poor rendition of my Floran character ^^;

(also i know corn isn't that small in game, but i was thinking a hydroponics bay would grow them slightly smaller but with the same yield...maybe?)

I like this idea. It's got mad flavor.

Well, pretty good idea, would make the game be pushed ALOT towards the sci-fi theme, i hope the devs see this idea.

So far, looking good... I guess something like this would be useful for areas where nothing can grow like the moon. I think this idea needs more fleshy details like what materials in game
would be required to craft such a useful device.

I would like to propose that in order to craft this, you would need some glass, some dirt, some seeds of some kind, iron, copper, silver, or gold frames (a frame would be crafted at a anvil), a circuit and wires (crafted at wire station)

Well, well, well. Marvelous idea in my opinion :) i would be really grateful if Devs implemented such idea in the game some day. :)
Yes it would push the game towards sci-fi theme, but i've been also thinking about lower tiers - some kind of less modern stuff, that could be used to plant crops in, like flowerpots or another containers. (still, i like the "ancient" aspects ;) )
Anyway - nice idea, and nice visualisation ;)

    I like it.
Its a cool idea that should be implemented in the game itself.
Maybe even have the plants grow a bit faster when its inside the hydroponics bays.

Or if not faster with a higher yield.

Additionally some type of light would make sense

Possibly the "cheap light" I think it is once you use the Portable Pixel Printer?

You could go all out on this and add hydroponics conditions such as humidity, amount of light, soil type, etc but that might be going a bit too far unless the growing of seeds changes all together and incorperates such parameters.

I think this is a pretty good idea, along with the proposed addition of additional yield or faster growing times.

When suggested the additional paramaters I was thinking that crops have requirements. And there are three possible outcomes of a combination of crops and hydroponics settings:

    1. Perfect conditions, crops will grow the fastest
    2. Acceptable conditions, crops will grow but not fast
    3. Unacceptable conditions, crops will not grow at all

I wouldn't suggest there is only three exact conditions but more like a 0-100% grow speed, additionally to make sense this system would have to be implemented outside of the hydroponics garden as well (otherwise it makes no sense that your crops is 'fussy' in the hydroponics but can grow in the cold, underground without light outside of the hydroponics.

[edit]: This would also create a useful need for hydroponics, as planet conditions might not always be great for every type of crops, but your hyroponic stations could be configured for each crop, well one station for each crop condition)

I wasn't referring to you, I was referring to @Alaster and @Shaggyd0g since they were the ones that suggested the additional yield or faster growing. I think adding things such as humidity and soil type would be too complex for a game like this, where hunger is a requirement. At the end of the day I don't particularly want to spend a large chunk of my time trying to grow crops when I could be exploring.

Agreed it would be too complicated and would possible take too much time (even though you would only have to set it up once).

However if crops have no grow requirements perhaps it is then debatable if a hydroponics garden has any merit beyond aesthetics (which in its own right could be a reason to add it)

[Edit] My mistake; you did list a reason: crops grow faster or yield more.

As was mentioned, they could have more yield in a hydroponics garden, which would make up for the potential investment.

I don't know if you've seen the http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?resources/starsanto.742/ mod but this would work really well with it in my minds eye.
Once the update hits I might have a dabble in modding attempting (attempting being a very key word) to make this mod. Although I have no idea how to make my own assets for a game whatsoever, editing pre-existing assets is in my skill level of almost nothing.
Wouldn't publicly upload to the community without @Onyxheart 's permission though. being his/her idea.

I'm no pixel master, but I could potentially lend my skills, I also know a little bit about the modding side of it.

The last game I modded was when DOW II came out and I messed around with that for kicks.
So it will be a steep learning curve on my end again.
But as soon as the update comes and I can take a gander at the new files and see what / if I'm capable of doing. I'm game.

Nah, this game has very well laid out assets, and modding is comparatively easy. I'd suggest having a look at it before the update comes out, that's what I'm doing anyway, since there's essentially nothing to do but wait in game now.

Like your other one, this one is a nice idea as well... And you mock up of your character isn't all that bad either. I can primarily draw objects, landscape, maps, and blueprint like stuff; but when comes to humanoidal things and some critters, I am not so well. lol

Anyway I like some of the suggests even after the initial post. Maybe this could be part of building techniques with many added items to incorporate into a design. When/if such things are added to a game. It would be a style of building that meets criteria that defines it as a Hydroponics center. This way you could make it as big or small as you wanted.

Otherwise the initial idea would be fine as a placeable object that is of fair size to hold a small amount of crops in the very least. I really don't think objects themselves should be very big, hence me suggesting that above. Either way I like the idea of adding more ways to farm, in a simply way; even if it takes a bit of initial work (the idea I suggested), but once it is setup up growing is just simply plant & harvest.

I prefer a simply approach to farming, as this isn't a intricate farming simulator; so the more simple yet effective it is, the more time to explore and do other things. :D
