Wasn't sure if this belonged in Planets & Environments or NPCs & Creatures so i've posted in both, feel free to delete if necessary.

A couple of ideas have been floating around up there lately with regards to creatures, the hunting system and the codex. so I thought it was worth posting up, see if anyone likes, agrees or can expand on it. I understand this is still early days of beta, there are much more pressing issues for the dev's etc and the following ideas are very much release-time concepts.

    Hunting

Right now [patch v. Indignant Koala] we've a very basic hunting system in place in which you can obtain leather and meat by killing mobs with Bows. I'd like to see an expanded system, with crafted weapons and armour requiring not only the raw components such as iron or copper bars but also small parts taken from animals killed such as tusks, claws, hides etc.
This would provide a bigger incentive to hunt, there could be entire armor sets based on the hides of animals, even bosses.. You could use hides and tusks to decorate your buildings and show off your kills.

    Bestiary

Following on from hunting, every animal you kill [or even just see..] would be included in a bestiary which updates as you explore, in a similar style to the creatures in Spelunky. Maybe this bestiary could include the damage they deal out in addition to their hitpoints, also any variations on the same creature [male, female, infant, boss etc..] so you know what to expect next time and can keep a lookout. After an animal is killed it's loot drops could also be added.
This woud give an added sense of immersion and exploration as your bestiary grows over time and you become more knowledgeable of the wildlife on each planet.

    Codex

Your codex could contain not only quest information etc, but also work in a similar way to the Bestiary in that as you explore it keeps track of planets you've visited, animals and creatures found on that planet, their characteristics .ie majority hostile or passive.. any NPC strongholds and villages & their disposition to you, and also the planets various biomes.
The codex would also contain the bestiary as a sub-section.. Eventually becoming a sort of self-updating Wiki that grows as you explore.

Another idea for the codex.. Any animal, creature, NPC, race, planet, biome etc that you have not yet encountered could be read about in the books that are sometimes found in NPC settlements, once the book is read its informtion is then added to the codex, in a similar style to the Knights of the Old Republic series.

Apologies if any of these concepts have been put forward before, I skimmed the Suggestion boards and didn't find much relating to it. Feel free to expand upon, critique or simply shoot down.
