    In-Depth Guide:

Chapter I: Discovery (Lower-Mid Level Recommended)
This can happen at any given time on any given planet where hostile sentient/humanoid enemies appear. It has an incredibly low chance of appearing, rare among other sidequests, and starts a decently sized chain of events that offer up a reward for mid-level and high-level characters.

The mission starts when an alien drops the item Ancient Text. Flavor text for this item states "An ancient slab of alien writings, obviously incredibly old. Known translators can't decipher it! Perhaps your Scientists can figure it out...". This urges the player to return to the lab on their space station or homeworld. Upon returning and offering it up for research, it takes a small number of resources, or a short amount of time/whatever is used to research objects. The Scientists will greet the player with:

Scientist: "Oh! Look at that funny thing! Now where did you find that silly rock? It looks like it was drawn on by a baby... wait. You want us to try to translate it? Well, I suppose we could give it a shot!"

After the research is completed, the Scientist returns the Ancient Text to you and tells you:

Scientist: "Well, it seems that this race is older than even our databanks here on the station can determine. Attempts to date this provide insanely large numbers that just can't be right.. furthermore, the tablet shows trace amounts of some sort of unidentified metal along with the clay and stone used to create it. This is very interesting indeed! Oh! But you don't care about that. Maybe if we had more samples, we could create a cipher. Perhaps the aliens you stole this from might have some?"

And so we return to the world where we found this tablet, and mercilessly slaughter a bunch of aliens. Ancient Ciphers drop with a decent drop rate (1 every 2-3 aliens) and all that's needed is to collect 5 of them. Return to the lab once more and offer these up for research.

Scientist: "Oh, more inane scribbles? Oh wow, that's quite the sample size. I should be able to work wonders from these! Sit back and watch the magic happen!"

After a short while/small resource cost/WHATEVER, the research is complete.

Scientist: "Well isn't this interesting? It's a message written in stone depicting the site and coordinates of an ancient temple world for an alien pilgrimage site. It says something about a 'metal of infinite power usable by only the gods'. I think this warrants further investigation. There are coordinates for this world at the bottom, you should go investigate!"

Scientist: "Also, we analyzed the trace metals in the tablet and we've been able to get enough metal to augment one of your weapons if you want. It might not do much, but the material is incredibly strong."

The player can choose then to put one of his items in the "Upgrade" dialog box that appears, and the item gains a permanent small damage increase as a reward.

The following text appears if the player receives this mission at a lower level:

Scientist: "Enjoy! You should be very careful though, the things in the Pyramid listed in that text seem pretty nasty. You might want to be prepared before you head in."

This is the actual flavor text/Log entry on the Ancient Starmap
Ancient Starmap: "For proving their strength and victory, they must make a pilgrimage to the Temple of the Star Walkers. Within the temple lurks great ancient evils. They must follow the Mark of the Ancient Leaders, and dig down from the left of the Mark. They are given locked safe, and must bring this to the highest point of the temple. This safe contains a metal of infinite power usable by only the gods, and the top of the temple holds a small amount of leftover power of the gods that can open and shape the metal within. This is the gift of the new War Leader.

(A set of numbers recognizable as space coordinates are listed at the bottom)"

Chapter II: The Pyramid (Mid-Higher Level recommended)

Following the coordinates listed on the text, one can travel to the Ancient Alien Homeworld where they find a mostly-empty alien planet spawned as normal with normally spawned flora and fauna. There is a randomly spawned "Mark of the Ancient Leaders" which is actually just a pile of skulls and an ancient flag that takes up a few squares. To access the temple cave, the player must dig down from the left of the mark, which is labelled "Landmark" when moused over. This will eventually drop the player in a large cave that leads further left and eventually shows the entrance to the pyramid.

Utilizing the Ancient Starmap on the Pyramid Entrance opens up the door. Inside are moderate difficulty aliens of one of the following types: Seeker Revenant, Reeking Stykaid, or Lurking Viscoid.

Seeker Revenants are spectral humanoids that take reduced damage from physical weapons and higher damage from energy weapons. They have a moderate health pool and move fairly quickly, and are able to move through walls/objects as if incorporeal.

Reeking Stykaids are mummified quadrupeds with their head located in the center of their bodies. They spit glowing acid at their target, take reduced damage from energy weapons and higher damage from physical weapons. They have a tendency to run away when hit by physical damage, have low health, moderate armor, and move fairly quickly. If the acid hits a surface, it remains for a few seconds and does light damage to anything that touches it.

Lurking Viscoids are small black blob-like creatures that create a shroud of shadow around them. They move slowly but are hidden beneath their shroud of darkness. The shroud swallows up any light, so even throwing light creating objects at them produces no light. They have a high health pool, low armor, no real resistances, and spit netherbolts at their enemies - bolts of shadow that swallow up light until they impact something. Like the glowing acid, the patch of darkness remains for a short period of time.

Within the Pyramid one can find Ancient Chests that hold one random broken or ancient item that is unusable when found. This can be taken back to the lab to be researched to provide a low to mid quality random piece of equipment. There is nothing unique about this equipment, it's just a random piece of anything. Ancient items tend to be weapons/tools and broken items tend to be armor/equipment.

Broken Item: "This piece of equipment has fallen into a state of disrepair. It's possible to restore it to its former glory but it might take some time and resources."

Ancient Item: "This appears to have been an ancient weapon or tool of some sort. It might be possible to determine what it was made of in the lab and restore it."

One Omnimetal Cache would be randomly hidden in the temple. Inside this Omnimetal Cache is an Ancient Omnimetal Shard. This shard can be taken back to the Lab to be researched to create an Augmented Item that will be listed at the end of the chapter.

Ancient Omnimetal Shard: "This piece of metal seems incredibly light, but at the same time, incredibly durable. There isn't enough to build anything out of it, but perhaps it could be used to augment another item."

Searching through the Ancient Chests and killing aliens yields the Ancient Writings items. These Ancient Writings can be combined into 5 pieces to create Ancient Research.

Ancient Writings: "These fragments of ancient writings appear much more structured than anything else in this pyramid. Perhaps they're of another source?"

Ancient Research: "This compilation of Ancient Writings clearly didn't originate in the pyramid where you found them. Perhaps the Scientists at the lab can decipher what is written here."

Returning to the lab, the player can research the Ancient Research to get Ancient Lab Starmap.

Conversation for handing in the Ancient Research:

Scientist: "Back from the temple thingy? Did you find anything neat in there? More ancient writings? Oh wow, these are much different and much more structured. I'll get to work on these immediately."

    Getting the Ancient Lab Starmap:

Scientist: "Well here you go. It appears to be notes from a race known as the Seekers, and it has coordinates to a research base on an uncharted planet. There could be a wealth of information there! However, if this is indeed another alien race intelligent enough to travel between planets and colonize worlds, entering that laboratory is probably going to be pretty dangerous. You'll need to be well prepared before you head in there."

Ancient Lab Starmap Flavor/Log Entry: "Samples of this unnamed race have been recovered and returned to Research Post S-35. Recovered technology seems primitive or unusable. Trace amounts of the strange material identified as "Omnimetal" have been detected throughout the pyramid and collected for further research. One large cache holding what can be identified as large amounts of Omnimetal has been recovered but we are unable to access it. Returning all samples to Research Post S-35 for further examination."

    Omnimetal Shard Dialogue:

Scientist: "This is the same stuff we found in that tablet! How very interesting. I bet we can use this in combination with some other basic materials to make an augmented item for you."

Options for making Augmented Items: Augmented Mining Tools, Augmented Blade, Augmented Laser Rifle, Augmented Armor Pieces (One of Chest, Helmet, Leggings, Boots, Gloves, etc... whatever the options end up being)

Augmented items mid-level higher quality items that do moderate damage with a quick repeat/swing rate. Armors provide good resistance to physical and energy damage and provide a speed boost as they are light.

Chapter III: Answers (High Level recommended)
Following the coordinates in the Ancient Lab Starmap, the player arrives on a small volcanic planet with a large laboratory on one section of it. The laboratory has four levels, the first of which is a surface level, which holds an elevator that goes down to each subsequent level. The planet is populated by higher level dangerous random non-sentient aliens. The laboratory holds even stronger versions of the surface aliens with the prefixes of "Altered" or "Experimental", making it a very difficult area to explore. Seeker Caches are scattered around the lab which hold random amounts of rarer or higher level materials used for production purposes. Prototype Caches hold random higher quality items.

On the Fourth level of the laboratory dwells a creature known as "Prime Experiment". This unique beast is a boss type creature that comes with a great number of different abilities. The fourth level itself is a much larger room with plenty of things to jump on to navigate in. The Prime Experiment is 3x larger than a standard alien. When it spawns, it gains 3 of the following abilities at random:

Shadow Storm: The Experiment lets loose a series of shadow bolts in all directions, which create fields of darkness in their wake and deal a moderate amount of damage. The fields of darkness remain for 3 seconds and the bolts dissipate when they impact a player or wall.

Fire Breath: A standard breath attack. Does moderate damage in a cone-shape in front of the Experiment. Targets hit with this attack also burn for additional damage over six seconds. It has a short range.

Laser Blast: The Experiment picks a random player in the area (Or the only player) and pauses in the position the player was at that point in time. He charges up for 2 seconds then lets loose a wide laser beam that deals incredibly high damage to any targets caught in the beam.

Vicious Claw: A short range frontal attack that claws all targets in front of the Experiment. The beast raises his claws, then after 2 seconds, ravages any targets in frontal melee range for high damage, and places a bleed effect on the target for another 10 seconds.

Blood Drink: Whenever the Experiment deals damage to an enemy, it gains back 50% of that damage in health.

Consumption: When the Experiment is damaged, it spawns "Biomass globules". The globules have low health, move slowly, but all move back towards the boss. For each globule that the boss consumes, it regains health equal to half the globule's HP. Globules themselves don't do damage unless touched, and they deal a minor amount of damage in that case.

Dimension Step: The Experiment will periodically vanish from sight for 3 seconds, then reappear and attack a random player for a moderate amount of damage. He will then take 50% less damage for 5 seconds.

Defeating the Prime Experiment yields standard boss random loot and a Seeker Lab Security Card. Behind the experiment is a Seeker Security Door. Using the card opens the door. Within, several computers exist that hold Seeker Information Logs. There are five computers with each log being named a different thing. At the back of the room is a Seeker Omnimetal Cache. Opening this reveals three items: Seeker Cipher, which is used to decode the information logs, Omnimetal Lockbox, which can't be opened, and Ancient Temple Access Rune. These can all be researched back at the base.

    Flavor Text for items:

Seeker Lab Security Card: "You're not quite too sure where the experiment was hiding this, but it seems to be some kind of security passcard."

Seeker Information Log 04A: "An encrypted alien datalog. Perhaps you can find a cipher to decrypt it nearby?"

Seeker Information Log 08B: "An encrypted alien datalog. Perhaps you can find a cipher to decrypt it nearby?"

Seeker Information Log 16C: "An encrypted alien datalog. Perhaps you can find a cipher to decrypt it nearby?"

Seeker Information Log 32D: "An encrypted alien datalog. Perhaps you can find a cipher to decrypt it nearby?"

Seeker Information Log 64E: "An encrypted alien datalog. Perhaps you can find a cipher to decrypt it nearby?"

Omnimetal Lockbox: "This strange metal box definitely has something inside of it, but there appears to be no visible way to access the contents."

Ancient Temple Access Rune: "This strange object is pulsing with some sort of unknown energy."

Seeker Cipher: "This is a small datachip that seems to have the code sequences to decrypt Seeker information logs."

    Data Logs:

Experimental Seeker Creatures: "Strange altered beasts hidden away in an ancient alien laboratory. These things seem to have escaped from their confinement cells after their masters vanished mysteriously ages ago. They are vicious, powerful versions of their previous selves with a seemingly insatiable hunger for your flesh!"

Prime Experiment: "This odd creature seems to be the most powerful of the experiments found in the ancient lab. Augmented with all kinds of cybernetic and genetic technology, this creature was indeed a monstrosity and a true threat. It's a blessing that it's remained locked down here all this time."

Upon returning to the lab and researching the items, you get the following dialogues:

    Seeker Cipher -
    Initial:
Scientist: "Interesting! This appears to be ancient alien technology... but it seems to interface easily with our own! How peculiar. We'll get right to work on logging this in our database."
    Researched:
Scientist: "Fascinating. This will allow us to translate any encrypted data this alien race might have left us! Did you find anything in that lab you explored?"

    Omnimetal Lockbox:
    Initial:
Scientist: "Well this is troubling. There's definitely something inside this box, but it's sealed tight! What's worse is that the box itself is made of that strange metal we've been finding, the Omnimetal. We'll see if we can figure out how to get it open."
    Researched:
Scientist: "Hmph! Even after running it through diagnostic scans and such we can't determine what's inside or how to get it out! Perhaps this has something to do with that old Starmap you found that lead to that old Pyramid. Was there anything in the Pyramid that looked like it could open this thing? Maybe at the peak?"

    Ancient Temple Access Rune:
    Initial
Scientist: "Oh wow. I've never seen anything like this. Is that thing even safe to touch? You should probably head to the med bay just in case. I'll just take that. We'll get right to work on it."
    Researched:
Scientist: "How very curious! This seems to be emitting a strange frequency of non-harmful energy! It matches up with inscriptions on the tablet you found before heading to that temple planet. Perhaps take it to the peak of the pyramid and see what happens!"

Researching the Seeker Information Logs provides the following research entries:
    Seeker Information Log 04A:
    "-- Seeker Datalog 04A --
Standard habitation of this planet seems nearly impossible. Natural races seem hostile but have adapted to the environment. Planet has been scanned for possible resource use via starmining. Reporting back to High Command for further orders."

    Seeker Information Log 08B:
    "-- Seeker Datalog 08B --
Initial scans of the planet yielded great data towards resources and life-form statuses. High Command transferred planet management to High Research Council for further investigation. Lifeforms adaptive techniques require further research. Requesting commission for Laboratory construction on-world."

    Seeker Information Log 16C:
    "-- Seeker Datalog 16C --
DNA processed of all life-forms on planet. No level of advanced sentience found. Gene sequences for adaptability have been recorded and are in processing for experimental application. Planet has been completely stripped of valuable resources via moderate-level starmining. Low casualty rate among planetbound life-forms reported."

    Seeker Information Log 32D:
    "-- Seeker Datalog 32D --
Suspended Life-Forms adapting well to altered gene sequences. Fatality rate is sinking below 35% with application of Volcan-Serum X27. High levels of resilience and aggression is detected among experiments but no intellect increase is recorded. Research progresses well. Further revisions will focus on stability."

    Seeker Information Log 64E:
    "-- Seeker Datalog 64E --
Experiment a success - too successful. Volcan-Serum X97 was everything we could have hoped for and more. One of the experiments has broken loose and consumed the entire batch, killing the research team. Cell has been placed on lockdown but evacuation orders have been sent. Research Base shutdown has commenced. All data has been transferred to High Research Council and High Command."

At this point, the player returns to the Ancient Alien Homeworld and raids the good ol' pyramid. At the peak of the Pyramid is a Sealed Slab. Using the Sealed Slab will consume the Ancient Temple Access Rune and open the door to the top of the temple. Inside this new room is an object at the very end that seems to be glowing with magical symbols. Using this machine unlocks the Omnimetal Lockbox - revealing a moderate amount of Omnimetal (Enough for one item), a random schematic for one recipe (Listed below), and a schematic for processing raw Omnimetal. At this point small traces of Omnimetal will populate this planet (And only this planet), the quest will be completed, access to the Seeker Lab Planet will be removed, and the player can go on his merry way for now. This quest is not repeatable, meaning the player can only ever get one schematic per character.

    Omnimetal Schematics:

Omnimetal Mining Laser: A powerful focused laser drill capable of cutting through most known materials with relative ease.

Omnimetal Vibroblade: A powerful Vibrosword that does heavy damage with a decently quick swing rate.

Omnimetal Spacesuit: Creates a full set of Omnimetal armor. This armor is lightweight, increasing movement speed, highly heat resistant, and provides a great amount of defense.

Omnimetal Mech Plating: Produces a powerful metal used to upgrade the armor of a Mech.

Omnimetal Manufacturing Tools: Increases rate of factory production greatly.

Omnimetal Hypercannon: A powerful laser cannon that fires rapidly for moderately high damage.

This isn't really a side quest...

That doesn't mean that it's not awesome or well thought out.

This would make for an awesome quest.

  3. Zolon

    Zolon Big Damn Hero

It's a longer sidequest meant to be completed for a nice shiny at the end. Right now it's only in plot format so it looks bulky but actually ends up being pretty simple and fun. :p

  4. TehEpikMonk

    TehEpikMonk Spaceman Spiff

Regardless, this would be really fun and interesting to do.

It should be quite late game though.

  5. Zolon

Sounds like a good observation - I imagine the material you get at the end will be pretty good. We're also discussing possibilities on the IRC channel.

  6. Afterscore

    Afterscore Weight of the Sky

I think this is very well thought out and definitely has serious potential as a viable side quest.

My main question concerns more so the aspect of Omnimetal and it's use in game. If it would be intended to be used for mid-tier gear as suggested then I feel some players may feel like it's a bit of a trek or long winded side-quest simply to gain average gear. As EpikMonk said, this feels like it might be better suited for late game and as a by-product of that, it may be safer to assume that the Omnimetal be much desirable and yield greater rewards in general.

  7. Wuzhles

    Wuzhles Cosmic Narwhal

I'd say that it could be used in making any item of any type.

Not to say that you could gather alot of just Omnimetal and craft thing, I mean more in a like, it's a reserve metal, perhaps you have 25 steel and 5 omnimetal but you need 30 steel to craft the item you want, then you could convert/use the omnimetal instead of finding more steel.

It's not up to me though, the creator of the thread (and the devs) are the ones in charge.

  8. Afterscore

    Afterscore Weight of the Sky

I can see how that would be very beneficial and useful, however I think it takes away from the Omnimetal being an exclusive material that you work hard to achieve - and if you're anything like I was in Terraria, you'll have steel by the bucket load by the time you reach mid-game ^^

  9. Zolon

    Zolon Big Damn Hero

The idea behind the Omnimetal itself is that it comes along with a specific schematic at the end of the quest. Researching this schematic would allow the production of an Omnimetal based item - and the cache at the end would award enough Omnimetal for one item, and perhaps a little extra.

Then comes the catch - would this be repeatable?

If so - then you can repeat this mission to uncover another schematic at a later date, and more omnimetal.

If not, then this quest could be tailored to a few things - you get one schematic from the quest, making it so you need to work with others to make other rare items. The pyramid planet would then be made permanently accessible and would have small reserves of Omnimetal ore around the planet, which could be processed for Omnimetal after finishing the quest.

    - Also, I'm not finished. I'll sum up the plot points then tackle flavor text. :)

    LadyAijou Phantasmal Quasar

This would make an amazing quest, one which I would happily complete. The depth here is fantastic, it wouldn't be just another quick 1 or 2 step quest to grab some easy cash or rewards. This is written as something that people will specifically WANT to do, intentionally wanting the end reward. Because of that they'll be willing to put time into finishing the whole thing. I think you're fantastic at this <3

  13. Zolon

    Zolon Big Damn Hero

Thanks guys! Quest is completed for now, let me know what you think of the flavor text entries and whatnot, and if I missed anything!

I decided the quest would NOT be repeatable, and that completion would yield small amounts of Omnimetal ore on the planet itself. The player would only ever get 1 schematic per character, and would have to trade with others/make more characters to get other pieces. Yes, this would end up being kind of sucky for single-players, but one isn't meant to walk around in all Omnimetal gear. It's more meant to be a really shiny, nice bonus item that you can get later in the game.

It's actually divided into 3 quests now, with each chapter being its own quest. The first quest can be completed at a low level and rewards a nice item for lower level/geared characters. The second quest is more difficult as the creatures in the pyramid are tougher to kill and the planet is a moderate threat level. Completing this awards and augmented item of moderate quality. The final quest is difficult because of the boss at the end, and the strong experimental creatures in the lab, let alone the volatile type of planet the lab is on.

Once the quest is completed, the lab planet is no longer accessible and the pyramid planet is able to be colonized, accessed, etc.
