hunger timer

Is it supposed to be like this? Seems ridiculous, a cooked steak or chicken shouldn't be something you have to eat every few minutes...

I kinda agree but you "have" to take in consideration that the minutes/hours and day/night cicles are accelerated ingame.

But yeah, I played for 1,5 hours earlier today and I found it a bit too quick

Additionally, so far early on many of the non-meat foods are next to useless, you might as not well farm them it seems.

Yeah, I was not planning to start a farm so early with my char but I just did as you need a lot of food.

Yeah of course the cycles are accelerated, but at this rate you need to farm up both a stash of roasted meat you carry on you, and a backup stash somewhere en case you die and can't recover...and take enough with you as you descend into the mine to eat every few minutes. That's really kind of silly, even if the timer was doubled it would be a big improvement, I like and want to play with the hunger mechanic, but it is out of whack IMO, at least at this early point of the game.

I started a farm and it's worthless, the only thing that is worth anything is baked potatoes, and those are still so much less than the hunted meats that it's hardly worth it. The really easy stuff like boiled pearl peas you might as well not even bother with.

Build a small farm with potatoes, I farmed around 10 potatoes every time I went back home and cooked them with various things I found, after I did that hunger wasn't really an issue.

Even so, the body can go for three weeks without food before finally starving to death. Granted, you'll be emaciated as your body will have long since digested all the fat and most of the muscle in your body and you will be delirious by that point, but you can certainly go a day or two without eating any food. It will suck sure, but it's not exactly fatal.

Exactly, it's a little silly that my guy starved to death in one or two days because I didn't grab the food in the locker, and didn't have ten steaks to eat at the time...maybe I can pretend he just has a fast metabolism:)

I mean like I said, I don't really want to play without it, I dig the mechanic but the implementation is surreal and bizarre.

It also seems to me that the hunger timer is far too short. I hardly have time to do any mining and have to be on the lookout for food all the time it seems.

If you get good enough food stuffs (rare and legendary stuff) one food item can completely fill your food bar and they can last quite a while before going rotten.

So if you are having any issues with food (im not personaly) i would recommend trying to get better food.

Also, i highly recommend conserved food from the outpost if you dont want to bother much with food. It adds a decent amount to the food bar and never spoils. Its also somewhat cheap.

Edit: Also, i just realised that raw rice stacks and dosen't rot. So if you just carry a campfire with you, you can have a huge stack of rice that you can turn into food at any time. But if you do that you might as well turn of hunger all togheter.

Personally, the huger timer seems about right. It takes ~3 days for it to deplete on planet, and it takes about 1 day worth of time to get enough food to supply it. That leaves me 2 days to mine, build or explore.

I find myself not standing around much, cause that timer keeps me moving... Don't want to waste time.

On what planet would that be? The day/night cycle is very different depending on the planet.

Just the starter planets. Most of them fall into the same range of time.

Ah yeah, the hunger timer. I forgot to mention this in my 1.0 rundown and it is kind of a big thing. My hunger bar was a little on the low side when i started the cutscene with esther at the outpost and died half way through it. I had to start a new character and get 20 more cores to see it again becasue you can go from kinda hungry to literally starved to death before someone has done explaining why they asked you to come here. It's a little much. Even with accelerated time pacing, you can still get so hungry you will die before you get to the bottom of a cave you've explored.

On the topic of food, i agree, that is why the cooking system is there. Growing a potato and munching on it shouldn't give as much as a 5 ingredient masterfully cooked meal. Totally agree with this. However the meter shouldnt degrade this fast no matter if you're eating raw corn or seared pokemon steak to survive.

I like hunger system, it makes the game more interesting. But I agree that hunger timer is running too fast. I don't like the feeling that satisfaction of hunger is the primary goal of the game. So that is why, in my opinion, hunger system is unbalanced. Not only exploration and mining, but also designing and building your colony is a big problem. You have constantly to think about feeding your character and it makes the game less enjoyable.

So I got a mod on workshop that rebalances hunger a bit and makes almost all food heal too. I like it so far, lets see.

Edit: What about cold vs warmth, any words from the devs regarding if it's gone for good? I liked it a lot back in the days.
