Well, how would it work with the current system?

Keep in mind hunger only makes the pressure to make a lot of food, not varied cooking dishes. You could get around it by cramming rice.

I'm all for it being added in as optional, but it shouldn't be forced. Many find it to actually just be an annoyance.

I would like it "back" too ( haven't lost it due to playing stable muahaha)

But it would be "more" work to make an option, no?

Still would love to see when and where it was decided and why. A Vote such as this would have been interesting!

And i say again: There are already mods out there to get invicible and have no hunger -.-

Clearly this should become a feature of Starbound.

Do you even realize how much selection bias there is on a poll like this?

    No.

In Minecraft, hunger is a CONSTANT annoyance. I timed this once. I got full hunger meter. Then, took a sprint/jump dash forward. After 30 seconds.... SECONDS.... I had to eat again. Who eats every 30 seconds? Not jumping or sprinting, I still found myself gorging on pork chops way too often. Our characters should have looked like zeppelins. All hunger meters serve to do is push the actual gameplay to a backseat role because you have to stop what you're doing and eat food or suffer some asinine penalty that makes no sense. If it gets added as an option to Starbound, then a lot of servers are going to use it which limits our choices severely if we don't want to play on a server that has it enabled.

That said, if the hunger meter can be integrated in a way that doesn't require cooooonstant upkeep and we don't need to keep stacks of food on us all the time, then sure, I guess that could work. But if I have to stop every 30-50 seconds to eat, no. Never.

I think in order to make it work - it would require a massive overhaul - and implementation of a new system.

One of the main issues is excessive food. Either my over farming or just build up in collection.

The issue is solved by having crops actually go bad after a period of time. So you can't just have infinite crop farms. The other issue then is what to do with those crops. You would need a place to sell them.

The next issue would be the food it self made - would also need to go bad after a period of time. So you just don't make and horde food.

The last part would be the food buffs it self. The best way to do it is to have buff timer which locks out other buffs. So only 1 food item can provide a buff at a time. So low class foods provide long empty buffs. So until that buff timer runs out you won't benefit from anything you eat. Even though the hunger bar continues to drop.

This would be independent of the hunger system. So you need to eat - but won't get any benefit from doing so. So you benefit from making complex foods with low buff timers if you wish too. But can easily make low class foods on the go [ cooked alien meat ] - which satiates hunger for a long time, but also provides a buff lock for a long time.

    ==
Later on have a tech slot which auto feeds from a food bag. But since it is automated it will just eat the items sequentially - hence not providing fine controlled benefit.

I'm sorry to say, but the idea of food going bad as part of mainplay would kill a lot of my enjoyment of the game. I don't play this for the "survival" in the "survival game" sense. I'm here to plunder guarded alien tombs, tear down cruel science labs, and construct large living spaces; having to constantly micromanage my diet and keep aware of freshness dates of food is kind of a major stumbling block there. What that does is make a system I already found a minor annoyance at best into a major annoyance.

I'm getting flashbacks to Brave Fencer Musashi's intrusive, obnoxious need to eat and sleep and worry if your food goes bad while in the middle of big action setpieces.

See here's the thing. The "survival game" elements need MAJOR, MAAAAJOR revamping to be more than busywork, but at what point does that expanded system clash with the action-adventure/build-stuff game CF is trying to make? How does it enhance the overall story and advancement that they wanna nudge us along? Early-beta Starbound is pretty directionless, but it's clear they've got a story they wanna tell and an overgoal they'd like us to achieve other than "exist". If an expanded hunger/survival system is getting in the way of the missiony-type story, is it worth the developers' time and effort to fully-realize it, especially if they take the suggestion of making it an optional toggle?

Basically, does it blend with the overall presentation and goal of the game, or is it best left to the world of mods?

Thats not how Hunger worked in Starbound, ever as far as I know. The Hunger bar was just based on time, I believe sleeping even stopped it from decreasing. It wasn't annoying, but I can't say there was a point to it other than realism. That being said, I did like the system and I don't see why they want to change it ... They could simply add the Food mechanics they are already adding, while keeping the Hunger System as well. Rewarding those that take the time to make better food, and those that only eat basic foods do nothing but stay alive.
