I think its bound to your character at characrer creation like press the bacon picture for hunger or the no sign for no hunger

As much as I'd think that would make sense, what about for joining online games which have it opposing on, or off? If the world creation is anything at all like Minecraft, where each map (or more likely in Starbounds' case, each "Galaxy") has its options set up prior to map creation, its possible each Galaxy the player makes might have it as such an option.

I think things like hunger and food add a dimension to the game that can increase both entertainment and excitement in the game.

Imagine, you're on a hostile planet with extremely harsh weather conditions. You finally set up a base and start exploring. However, you got caught up in the immersion and now you're low on food and starting to go hungry. You would beam up to your ship, but *gasp* there's not enough fuel to get back to a planet with a reasonable food supply. So now you're stranded on this planet and it's a race against time to find either food or fuel before death takes you!

It could also add some interesting gameplay design features as well. Think of Floran armor blueprints that allows the player with a full set to convert sunlight into food, where the hunger meter slightly regenerates while you remain in sunlight, but begins to deplete at night or when indoors/underground. Since they're already doing that with Energy, it's not too much of a stretch.

for me the hunger system is critical at the bottom of our characters roam the universe must survive for me enhances the realism and encourages exploration

I wholeheartedly support hunger as a feature, as I did so back in the day when devs were of somewhat different idea and hunger wasn't meant to be in. In fact, I suspect that given general laid-back and wacky mood of the game, hunger will be just a small gimmick with nourishment available commonly and in large quantities. In comparison with that, enjoying survivalistic element in many of my games, I may even say that I'd like option for hunger to be considerable challenge - while I'd like for it to increase very slowly, making quality food reasonably rare (on the basis that many species of flora and fauna is alien enough to be indigestible) would be a really nice thing for me - but I understand that there may be many users of different approach and views.

I'd say it's all a matter of balancing and offering alternatives. I don't think it would be too strange if player, instead of having to hunt or farm, would be just able to purchase edibles. I also don't think it would be too hard to implement custom difficulty setting per server regarding growth of hunger and so on.

I would be very surprised if things like feeling hunger and other gameplay-affecting attributes would be set player-side, though, and I don't think it would/should be in. It would lead to horrible exploits and imbalance when a group of players who set some tough, but manageable level of difficulty through need for nourishment etc would be visited by a new guy who, for the sake of getting an edge, disabled hunger altogether.

I want to starve without food. I want to be cold out there where it's cold. I want to die slowly where radiation. I want to board with poisons.

I know this is unorthodox, but I don't care if hunger is in or out. I just wish it was not optional.

Having hunger be optional seems a lot like having jumping be optional. It seems like a mechanic that has such a huge impact on the gameplay that you need to design the game around having it or not having it, not simply tack it on or let the player decide. Of course, players who want this mechanic or that mechanic could always just mod it in later.

Since hunger will be optional whether I like it or not, I really hope they go the rest of the way and allow players to turn off mob spawns and such so that they can just build and explore. It would be kinda like creative mode in Minecraft. So then you'd have Creative mode and Survival mode.

EDIT: I expect that even with hunger, Violet Rations-- Pills that provide the nutrients of a full meal-- will make hunger a non-issue. Buy them en-masse.

I somewhat agree with this, which is why I'm hoping the option remains server side and not necessarily in control of the individual players. You either play on a server with hunger enabled or play on one with it disabled. That's just my opinion though but it seems silly to me to share a world with people where I would have to eat and they wouldn't. Again though, could just be me.

I think it would be nice if I could take any of my characters onto any server freely, and if there are Hunger-Only servers then that is just one more reason for the option to be Server-side. Of course, even better would be if the server has an override that turns all characters on it into hunger-on characters while they are on the server, but turns them back when they leave.

I could have a hunger-off character, join a hunger-on server that overrides my character settings, then go back to hunger-off in my own world.

I wonder if we will be able to build a farm on our space ships. If we can, I'm pretty sure that instead of decorations my ship will only contain crafting stations and farming plots. Truthfully, that seems like what a deep space exploration vessel would look like anyway. Here's to the implementation of hydroponics and grow lamps. :coffee:

Yep! And thats perfectly fine too! Im not you, and youre not me! ^w^

Isnt it wonderful to have the option to leave it out? Although noone can deny the fact that Bacon doesnt even need a function. Its bacon for crying out loud.

  15. Hunger is going to be optional for players who want a challenge. I don't really like hunger systems in games, but if the developers integrate food and stomach emptying with the community in mind, I think it'll be well-received.
