Hunger needs to be increased.

Currently I run around a planet and... nothing. Hunger seems to be either broken or so weak its pointless.

seems pretty realistic to me. In irl i can go 24 hours without food and not suddenly take damage and die. It would be very tedius to go hungry in game every 5 minutes when it doesn't reflect realistically at all.

When you are effectively digging holes through the planet?
Not every 5 minutes but I do not see the point of a farm if I do not need to eat anything for over an hour. I can sustain my hunger without hunting or farming.

Honestly, I think that the hunger mechanic should probably be removed entirely. The ONLY time in the game that it is even remotely relevant is the extreme early game, but once you have built your table, it is all pretty much trivial. You can just plant food in your ship, and then harvest it periodically as you go up there. If you have a reasonably sized patch of dirt in your ship you'll rather quickly get more food than you'll ever be able to eat. Even without farming, though, hunting just isn't that hard and again, you can get enough meat that it lasts forever.

The solution is not to make hunger more obnoxious but to just remove the mechanic entirely because it really serves no mechanical purpose whatsoever; it is just busywork.

Or to make it actually useful.

I think that the lower it gets, certain stats should get debuffed (obviously the lower the worse, starting from some halfway point) and that the higher it is the more these stats get a buff.

Also probably make it decrease faster. Just make it more useful in general. Sort of like how heat is useless as well, since for the most part I just totally ignore ice planets.

Eh seems pretty decent to me.

By the time the plants I have tossed into the ground finish growing is just about when my character needs some food. That seems about spot on.

I have not planted a single thing. I can just go kill stuff as I mine get 1 or 2 lucky meat drops and be good for another hour or so.

you can survive 30 days without food. So seems fine to me

Has nothing to do with a game.

What use could it serve other than buffing your character while you have a high hunger bar?

Honestly I find myself running around with a stack of alien meats so I don't go hungry. If I need more I just use the hunting bow. As a mechanic it just feels like it's just some busywork that keeps me from mining or exploring, the two fundamentals of the game. If I went hungry faster than I do now I'd probably give up on playing for a little while as you already have to spend a lot of time exploring to get the resources you need.

well maybe slightly faster hunger , provided we get more basic food recipes, as anything non-human it's a pain to cook stuff :S

I also forgot to mention that a lot of planets have naturally planted plants, so I generally tend to just end up harvesting those (as well as using the hunting bow as my only ranged weapon unless I'm lucky) and ending up hoarding 60+ items of food, just sitting in my inventory.

Oh, and another way is to have each different food item actually feed you in different values, with recipes giving the most. Also food items giving different (minor) buffs per food.

I went hunting for leather to try to make a snowsuit to mine an asteroid with.

I have 250-something cooked meats. I'm good on food for a long while.

You can kill a ton of cows in minecraft too and be good to go for ages. So.. I don't see how that suggests the time on how fast you get hungery is broken. If you find you find that getting /hunted/ food is easy it seems thats a drop rate issue.. That or maybe they need to tweak the non hunting bow meat drops as well.

I would like if the bow dropped leather in a higher ratio to food. Or maybe they could drop more than one thing instead of Leather OR food. As it stands right now with my 250-ish stack of food, I have... 22 leather? I think? And I haven't crafted anything with it.

It isn't broken. It is just a pointless mechanic atm that adds zip to the game and lacks any real penalty to make me use farming or hunting.

The penalty is you die if you ignore it. This kinda of system should be easy to deal with otherwise it'd just be even more of a chore.
