Hunger IS still planned to be optional right?

Your comparisons to his argument were pointless and are apples vs. oranges. Ammo is necessary in a combat-oriented game that uses an ammo system, for one, while hunger is merely a "cool mechanic" that doesn't really need to be there, it is not necessary unlike ammo might be. And about Minecraft: I found that the balance in the hunger system just made it a nuisance. It didn't make it more fun, more real, more interesting, it was just a liability and something that held me back. While I have hopes that it's better in Starbound, it it ends up just being a pain and causes me to play in a way that I don't want to play, I'll turn it off.

Oh, and it doesn't matter if using a hunting bow is a supreme pain in the rear, or quite enjoyable and easy, it's still making the player play a certain way and I don't like that.

For me, the survival aspect of the game is what distinguishes it from other games in the genre like Terraria. Sure, its going to be hard to find the balalnce where the mechanic seems rewarding and nither destructive or pointless, but if done right, I think it adds a layer of depth to the game that I know I will enjoy.

Im kinda hoping that hunger can be turned off but if its not maybe we will see it give rise to a group of players on a server. someone sets up a hunting/farming planet and then charges loot/pixels for food. i mean if someone really enjoyed hunting or farming they could do that while others did the dungeon exploring. maybe make it a rotation too so its not always the same person farming etc.

I'm still not sure whether or not I like the hunger bar yet. Sure, it'll keep me on my toes, but do you even know how many times I'll just forget to pack food and die while mining?

If it's only bows that can get meat, and SOME of the time at that, I don't like the mechanic. If there are other weapons/ways to get it and such, it's fine.

Waiting for the mod that makes food "realistic" you know, skinning it,waitng real-time for it to cook. Etc, drying it, so it can be taken with you, so it doesn't rot in your inventory.

I'm personally sick of streamlining every last "annoyance" out of a game because people don't want to do it. I like the hunger mechanic. I also like the temperature mechanic and I'm hoping they add in the mechanic of horizontal blocks needing vertical support blocks or they crumble. Anything that adds to the realism of the game, I would enjoy. That being said, there should be an "easy" mode where it is all disabled. Or even better, check boxes you can tick or untick before starting a new game.

If they added a few more options to hunt, like traps, that would be cool. I can understand that tearing an animal to pieces with a gun wouldn't leave much meat, and neither would slicing it into pieces with a sword or axe. But, something like a one shot rifle should work too. More options for different playstyles is the way to go.

So hey, I like your idea. Like Minecraft, there's the hunger bar. But what we could use is a Creative Mode, like in Minecraft, except the entire inventory of items is there at your fingertips. :3

No, just no. That would just cheapen the game and take away all challenges.

._. It's option, you don't have to use it. But on Multiplayer serves Admins and Mods can use it but regular Players can't.

I'm fine with letting players have the option though, but not before I get server protection. I don't want someone going into creative mode, giving themselves the best gear they can, then joining a server. Sorry, that'd ruin the fun for people who actually want to play the game as the devs intend, not just to derp off hardcore.

Errr you just made his point, after he failed to do so. "Ammo is necessary in a combat-oriented game" well hunger is necessary in a survival and exploration game? You don't think so? That's nice, the GAME CREATORS do. I kind of take their word over yours in what they feel should and should not be in the game. While I completely agree the forums exsist to discuss, and I've always sided with player option over mandatory. It seems silly so many are so angry this game has hunger in it. Especially when there are known plans to have it be an option at a later point, maybe not in Beta, but I can't capture monsters yet either. As for my opinion? Here, it's not just a "cool mechanic" it's a usefull system much like Heat is in this particular game, why? Because it stops you from derping hardcore unless you're in admin/creative mode. The game was meant to be challenging, to make it so you have to be wary of your heat, of starving to death etc. That's why these mechanics were added.

It's no different then ammo in a combat-oriented game, if no one ever ran out of ammo what would happen? Well in most leagues of play, not a damn thing. Very few players are skilled enough to burn through all their ammo effectively, and most of those that do are skilled enough to keep it replenished. Worried about people holding down the fire button? Sure that might happen, but in most cases since you're lit up on the map you'll be picked off by a better player, or a sniper who isn't derping. As for Minecraft, I have a tendency to play on ruthless and cruel worlds my friends and I make, we're taking enemies that will one-shot you when you first start, if you're caught out at night. And even in diamond armor they pose a challenge, we play on hardmode, so that your hunger can kill you, so that when you respawn you respawn with only 3 hunger. That to us is part of the game, it's fun, it's rewarding to beat small parts of the game like hunger and a safe-haven etc.

This once again goes into opinion over fact. Your opinion of a nuisance and mine are very, very different. As for it making a player play a certain way? Well...yeah. That's exactly what limited ammo, and reloads do in a shooter. That's what turn-based games do in not allowing you to constantly shift your pieces as fast as you can. That's what resource gathering does in RTS games. The whole point of mechanics is to force you to play the game a certain way. I don't see how what you're saying makes any sense at all, but that's just my way of looking at things. Forgive me but your mindset of. "if it ends up just being a pain and causes me to play in a way that I don't want to play, I'll turn it off" Well sure that's one way to look at it. I mean that's why there is a creative mode in Minecraft, and a Peaceful mode easy mode etc. This way people can do as they want to. Then again, that's a difference of opinion. You say that you feel a creative mode would cheapen the game and take away all challenges? That's exactly what you're asking them to do in my opinion! "Oh I don't want to be bothered with hunger, let me turn that off." Maybe those people don't want to be bothered with gathering the materials? OR fighting period? Your posts confuse me sir. If anything should be made optional, it's durability.

Seriously, hunger isn't anywhere NEAR as annoying as item durability is. If they're going to make hunger optional, that's great and all, but they've sorta already missed the boat for weeding out irritating game mechanics. At least hunger gives you a reason to keep harvesting your garden or whatever, Durability does practically nothing but waste time, and if severe enough, non-renewable materials.

    This. This all the way.

If you want some sort of mechanic to be there for players to micromanage, It would make a LOT more sense if the animal dropped its carcass when it died and you could press down to pick it up and with the right tools harvest stuff from it. I. E. you'd need a butcher's knife to harvest the meat, and then you could either cook that as is or use something like a sausage grinder to change the type of food you get from it. You'd need different tools to make other stuff, for instance to get leather, you'd want basically some kind of tanning equipment and leather working tools.

I mean, unless you're going around blowing the animals into chunks with a rocket launcher or disintegrating them with death rays, SOMETHING usable is going to left no matter what was used to make the kill.

I feel like I may have represented my opinion incorrectly, due to the fact that I was merely offering a counterargument to the other guy - I love Starbound's hunger system (and temp system). I just didn't like Minecraft's at all (but in other games I liked it, like in Don't Starve). My main issue is stuff like only hunting bows allowing us to get meat, which seems to be a concern shared by many. But if that isn't changed, I may end up liking it anyway, and can just deal with it. Bows seem fun, anyway. I want a challenge, but we mustn't confuse being challenge with being limited. So while I do think that hunger does have the potential to be more of a nuisance than a fun challenge, I don't necessarily think that's going to happen in this game. As far as my issue of a game "forcing us to play a certain way", consider this: I play RTS and FPS games in limited amounts because I like freedom, that's just my style - I like sandbox games where I can choose to go anywhere, anytime, and see what I can pull off with minimal limitations compared to a game that has me on a track. I can stock up on ammo in Fallout 3, or I can just rush through and make due with the little that I have. I have a choice. And I like that. A hunger system is a touchy thing...it can make me hate the game, or love it. I had to mod it out of Minecraft because I hated it - remember the part you quoted where I said I hated the BALANCE of it? Not necessarily the hunger system itself. While I appreciate your thought-out reply to my comment, I feel you're missing what I'm saying - I'm not asking for a creative or peaceful mode, you're thinking very black and while/all or nothing here. I'm saying that (just like with MC), if I don't like the hunger system because it feels like it's holding me back and ends up making an otherwise enjoyable game less enjoyable, I won't use it.

This is a survival/exploration game wrapped in a nice layer of action rpg goodness. Go play Terraria if you want to run around exploring without hunger/temperature (not knocking Terraria - it's just a different game experience). There doesn't seem to me that there will be any shortage of food sources in this game as it is, and having to find/craft certain equipment to effectively explore/survive certain planet environments looks to give Starbound a sense of progression that games like Minecraft can't offer.

You should not be able to run around on an ice planet in your boxers, nor cold weather gear in a desert. The hunger mechanic gives a good incentive to build bases/farms as opposed to running around 100% of the time ingame simply looking for new loot. If that is what you are looking for that is fine but it does not seem to be in line with what the developers want their game experience to be.

Be glad there isn't a proper butchery system in place. You'd think getting a steak off of something would be as easy as just cutting the juicy flanks from the quivering, still warm corpse of the steak beast. It's not. It's really, really not. Of course I suppose you could set up the gut piles outside your camp to attract the more exotic predators to pay you a call while you sleep...you did remember to set up some sort of wall right?
