Hunger IS still planned to be optional right?

The meat can be pulverized beyond edibility, contaminated by mixing with waste (don't want your steak to taste like a po), the animal could be sick, plus you could always just throw the generic "they're aliens!" argument in there. Animals aren't just skin and bone but they're not always meat pinatas either.

And then in "heaven" he gets to farm some more on the exact same farm and in the exact same way. For eternity...

Bacteria is made up of 0% meat and is alive, I think jellyfish arn't made of meat either.

Animals don't need to have organs to live. Trees are living and they technically don't have organs.

Trees are plants, not animals. Besides, we're talking about non micro-organisms.

As far as I know, the Sandbox mode doesn't have hunger. In Beta, I don't think it'll be possible to turn off hunger just by flipping a switch in the options menu - however, there might be a way to disable it in some .ini's in the coding. We won't know for sure until we can see the files in front of us.

I honestly really like the idea of hunger anyway. It gives a sense of immersion, and that you're actually vulnerable.
I agree with a previous poster in that the hunting bow shouldn't be the only weapon that can yield meat. I mean, you can kill an animal with practically anything (spare for explosives and poisons and stuff like that) and the meat will be just fine, so why is it that we're restricted to only this bow? Perhaps if they're going to restrict it to only a certain weapon, they could add some sort of extra property to a few other weapons called "hunting" or something that would allow them to yield meat like the hunting bow does.

Or, here's another idea - Hunting efficiency. Different weapons yield different amounts of meat. Say I use a laser cannon gun to kill a creature. Obviously, I'm going to burn whatever isn't completely destroyed, so this weapon wouldn't be very efficient in hunting, and would only yield a really small portion of meat. However, if I use a modern gun that shoots a regular bullet, most of the animal will be just fine, so I'll get a moderate amount of meat. Then I have the hunting bow, which yields a LOT of meat. And then of course there's the hardcore weapons that don't leave anything left and have 0% meat efficiency, such as poisons, huge explosives, matter destroyers, etc.

    Just a thought.

There is a survival aspect to the game, and there is a 3th option the OP forgot to mention. Food doesnt deplete rapidly, and isnt hard to get, provided you spend time on getting it. Rather then wandering around looking for a mine, murdering everything along the way, and comming home with a stack of meat. Even tough you never set out to get food.

And i believe this is why you need a special item, such as the hunting bow, to get meat drops. So the player cannot just use the optimal weapon all the time, and get food from random mobs he runs into. But acquiring food has to be a concious descision.

The conversation on this thread makes me think. Do they differentiate robotic mobs from organic mobs? Can robots themselves drop meat? Also, I like the hunger system. However, I think there will come a point when hunting is either unnecessary, or just something to do for fun (hm....). Once you can get a farm up and running efficiently, food shouldn't be too much of a concern.

Another thing this makes me wonder is if domesticated animals will have a higher meat yield, or if there will be other ways to get resources from them. Imagine getting milk or eggs from this...

Personally I'm looking forward to the hunger mechanic. Even though it won't be as central to gameplay like in Don't Starve (which I love) it adds a fun amount of tension to every other action you will be taking. I'm ready to randomly generate crops on many worlds.

I'm fine with the hunting bow. When adventutjng around and slaying hordes of monsters I'd rather meat not be on the loot table denying chances of other goodies. Controlled drop item is dandy.

  11. Optional or not I will definitely be giving the hunger and temp mechanics a go right off the bat. I love survivability and this only makes it a bit more realistic. I'll also try it with it turned off though just to try it out.

No, they have to dig really really far down, to get Fossil fuel... And don't get too attached to your planet, you need to switch about ever 10 hours, due to the global warming caused by the Glitch.

Yup, pretty much this. I like the hunting bow for that reason. It makes it so you have to keep an alternate weapon on you for hunting food. Or you need to he an efficient farm going. I'm sure between my friends and I we won't have any food issues. But we'll see how it goes. I kinda figure one of us (Cough cough me...damnit cough) will be tank/melee to absorb the damage, and the others will be using bows constantly to get a hefty supply of food while the farm takes off.

Traps? Should also be able to spawn meat. But only a sophisticated refrigeration-storage equipped super-trap 9000 can collect meat while you're away from it.

I don't like the food system in a way of "eat or die" as it is interesting at start, but later it just becomes a chore and "equipment slot tax" of exploring deeper

I'd rather have something based around buffs or debuffs, say when you are hungry you get small debuff, when you eat "normal" quality food you dont get any, but when you cook something good you will get some small buff depending on recipe.

So if player wants to say prepare for exploring cold planet he can either get some warming food, craft warmer clothing, or take more fuel for campfires

Manufactured plasma is very hot, like on a scale of Nanny McPhee to Katy Perry, it would be 12 (15,000,000C). If the animal doesn't turn to dust you'll probably get yourself some grade A jerky.

Do we even know what causes our hunger bar to decrease besides the passing of time? I'm reminded of Minecraft, where time would very slowly cause it to lower, but actions such as attacking, jumping, mining, running, and sprinting each had their own "formulas" for how much they each affected hunger too. So I'm wondering what we know about this in regards to Starbound.

"Either you're given very little ammo, and gunplay is a pain in the ass, or you get a lot of it, so it's not really a big deal."
"Either I study excessively for my SAT and ace it, which will be a pain in the ass, or I don't, which is easier, but still bad as I'll fail."
"Either I get out of bed in the morning and go to work, which I don't want to do, or I stay in bed and get fired."

I'm seeing a pattern here. Seriously, guys, it's not hard to get enough food to sustain yourself, everyone did that in minecraft and it was fine. There's a reason it's difficult; to give players a challenge. Though the game obviously isn't real life, do you know how hard it is to hunt with a bow? Be glad the devs aren't going all out on this game and making it as realistic as possible.
