Hunger IS still planned to be optional right?

I know it was stated to be at some point and I hope that hasn't changed. Either food is hard to obtain and hunger is just a pain in the ass, or food is easy to get, making hunger pointless and a minor annoyance. Either way it's not really adding anything worthwhile to the gameplay.

The hunger bar as is doesn't even decrease that slowly. And you need a bow of sorts to kill game for food.

I don't much see the point of making a nonintrusive feature optional. But I THINK there is a sandbox mode where heat and hunger are disabled.

Why a bow specifically though? If you can kill it, why not just have it drop the meat?

I thought at first they wanted a system that would guarantee meat drops without trivializing the hunger meter, but even when killing with a bow the meat isn't guaranteed, so yeah, I have to also wonder why they didn't just give it a percent chance to any monster you kill, regardless of then weapon used. Except for explosions I guess.

I imagine it's there to steady your early gameplay out and stop you from rushing ahead. I imagine a few solid hunting trips to gather meat and then some good recipes to use said meat will leave you with a rather large stockpile of food to rely on for days.

It's not a bad thing at all, it's an activity to draw your attention away from just mining and exploring. The "oh wait, I'm hungry and need to set up camp for a little while and get some food together before going on this long adventure" sort've time.

As for the people asking: "Why a bow?"

Why not? Mining picks for mining, axes for cutting wood etc, the bow's another tool to collect a resource. Right now you're thinking of it as a nuisance, but consider it more of a fun gameplay addition that'll extend the life of the game for you rather.

Hunger isn't a good mechanic generally. There were a couple of threads about it and specifically how the bow would work. Its one of those things that keeps you a little honest in the beginning but then is just kinda there once you get rolling because food is easier to come by. So many different scenarios on how it might work but we'll have to see how it evolves in this game. Maybe we'll.come to like it.

Things like hunger and temperature bars keep you more alert. Often you will be doing something repetitive and it starts to
become somewhat of a brain dead task. These features may be annoying at times but they will keep you in a more alert state,
at least at the beginning of the game. They also give us an aim while improving our tech level so that we can overcome the
hunger and temperature bars easier (thermal suit, irrigation for improved farming etc)

What if I want to use a butcher knife? What if I don't want to eat other animals? What if I want to be a masochist vegetarian? Will there be fruit trees? (There should be fruit trees)

I like the hunger bar. Gives me a good reason to build a nice little farm outside my base :)
As for the bow, yeah, I don't like that the ONLY way to obtain meat is through killing enemies with a bow.
Someone somewhere once suggested a "hunting" tag that could be applied to weapons, and those hunting weapons would drop meat. I like this idea.
However, as I said, I'll have a little farm, so I won't have to look for meat so often :giggle:

Yes, there are fruit trees and crops :rainbow:

Killing game with bows IRL is about 1000x better than killing game with a sword or gun, so why not make it like that in starbound?
Bow - If hit in the right places leave blood, but the entire animal is intact, you can pull the arrow out and start skinning it for meat
Gun - guns make a hell of a lot of noise, scaring off nearby game and you have to take the bullet out of the animal, which can be a real pain in the ass.
Sword - I wouldn't want to eat anything after I witnessed it being chopped in half live with its guts spewing everywhere.

(this is coming from a person who knows jack shit about hunting, but I have read the hunger games, I am a professional!)

I'd wager that there is a weapon called 'hunting rifle' of some sort that can be used for gathering meat.
I certainly hope there will be!

Okay, in total seriousness, I wonder if we'd be able to create hybrids of trees, "new" and unique plants from breeding.

  13. If you don't wanna on singleplayer that's fine. Now on servers that is to server owners to setup so people will experience hunger or not.

Oh no! I stabbed this animal to death with a sword instead of shooting it with a bow! I guess the meat just vaporised into thin air. That'll show me not to use a sword against animals.

I like the hunger system. I've played Minecraft for so long, it would feel weird to me if there wasn't any hunger.

Why isn't meat a 100% drop though? Do some monsters not have meat? Are they literally just skin and bones? What is this?

This has always been my exact opinion on this. How are they alive and functioning if they have no organs, muscle or fat?
