Well, the setting is more than just the races and the magic, there's also the general theme or subgenre, world, history, and all the rest. Just as Elves/Dwarves/magic aren't required for something to be a fantasy setting, you also don't need to skip those things to make it unique.

unique setting? Dwarves, elves, wizards? Starbound Guns? I give to you *mixes shaker* Starbound Fantasy Mod!

  3. What if instead of planets, we have dimensions. And the aircraft would actually be a means of transportation that opens portals to other worlds out there, each new one populated by different creatures. ^^

...Why stop at visual edits when you could try making a total conversion?

A problem with a total conversion mod with a game with Starbound's scope is that it will literally take years to complete. Then again it had never stopped modders before.

Of course for a 2D sandbox game with other worlds and a more fantasy oriented theme there's always Crea. They'll be having multiple realms accessible through Way Crystals, and everything is being built around the concept of total mod support. From what I've seen so far it's shaping up fairly nicely, I think they've cleared most of the unexpected hurdles and seem to have finally hit their stride.

Still, I think Starbound is perhaps a better fit for delving into the World as Myth concept Heinlein kicked around in Number of the Beast, but I guess there aren't a lot of fans of a science fiction author who has been dead for twenty five years, but Number of the Beast is only 33 years old, and it is still an interesting concept to delve into. The amount of work it would take to mod a variety of fictional universes into any game would be staggering, but I've seen a lot of that sort of thing done, and it would be neat to be able to kill Metroids in one world, pop into another and kill the Undead in a Castlevania world, and pop into another to smack Foot Clan thugs with a whip while hunting down some elusive ooze. Also the beauty of modding the Continua device into the game is it wouldn't have to be a total conversion and any worlds could be focused on and released one at a time.

Ahhh well, I'm always amazed at what the mod community creates for games I enjoy playing, personally I found slapping together a quick and dirty mod for Dungeons of Dredmor about at the limits of my patience level. Things like Misery 2.0 for Call of Pripyat are so vast I'm not sure how they manage to bring them all together. Then again I've always got more ideas than time, and trying to figure out how to make game engines do what I want them to has never been my forte.

I was genuinely worried when I saw the thread title. But this might make a good mod, especially if it takes a steampunk twist.

Either Steampunk, or Terry Pratchett style humor. Or both...

Of course for airships, and a steampunk vibe in the 2D Sandbox style Windforge looks like an attractive option.

I'd love to see a Discworld style of mod, I'm just not sure how it would work in a 2D sandbox game. Who wouldn't just head off to the Counterweight continent and gather all of the gold they could shove into boxes made of Sapient Pearwood?

You all have good ideas, but we have enough fantasy games, I still prefer Starbound to remain scifi.

This could be a big project. If anyone does this, I will be impressed.

Sorry if this has already been said, this sounds like a job for a large modding team. And admittedly does sound very cool and something I would be interested in. So here's a simple thumbs up and I wish whoever tackles this project a lot of luck.

Not sure if this joke has been made yet but...I know how to go to my steam library and load up Terraria if I want.
