How to see underground without torches.

Those are also called Torches. It's not confusing to call these and the electric variety by the same name, we usually mean the electric sort when we say Torch, and I, personally, would say wooden torch if I meant the older variety.

If the ground is above you it is underground. Just because the layer of ground to the side isn't thick enough to break through doesn't change that.

heh! the semantics of torch vs flashlight are bad enough, I'll openly admit to that, the semantics of what constitutes being underground is definately not needed, if I picked up some dirt with my hand and held it above me, would I be underground?

Well actually it has several meanings - Flash refers to the fact that it is an instant light. This is not something you had with flammable torches or candles.

Debatable - Considering how the game is a 2D plane, you could argue that since there is a thin layer of dirt on both sides, you might as well call it above ground. By your logic "underground" would be anything from an igloo to a shed made of mud.

You can also close your eyes and feel the darkness.

    Be the darkness.

you would technically be "under" some "ground"
looking up the definition of ground: the solid surface of the earth. and under: extending or directly below.
so no, because the dirt you are holding above your head is not solid, and if it is then I would call you underground
underground: beneath the surface of the ground. so why not?

definitions are directly copy/paste from goggling the definition of them

Just combine the two and call it a "Torchlight"

Maybe we can create a second version and call it "Torchlight II"

There's also a lantern craftable tier 1. It emits omnidirectional light but is not as bright as the flashlight (or the later lantern on a stick, I think).

The lantern on a stick is nice, however it doesn't give off as much light as a torch does. Downside to everything, I guess.

In the beginning, they were not remotely energy efficient and didn't last long, hence the "flash" part of the name. There's nothing silly about a new device being given a new name. Torch and flashlight are both correct names for it. Torch fits as a general light source, so a flashlight is a torch.

  12. Not hating at all, but electric torch sounds pretty hilarious and silly to say the least.

Makes me imagine someone coming through a portal from the future and being like "BEHOLD FELLOW BRITS, THIS BE AN ELECTRIC TORCH!"

Lol duh, this is an easy question. Of course you are underground.

That begs the question, would a stick that generates electric sparks at one end along with generating some amount of light, be considered an electric torch? Though granted that would almost be sort of a literal representation of an electric torch.

I guess. I am just saying though. Too far underground, no light from backwalls.

I actually kinda wish breaking the background the way you're able to didn't exist and instead was like how Terraria handled it....on the other hand, the convenience outweighs that when it comes to building.

    Really Large Match?

That sounds more like a match to me. Or a lighter.

Except that torchlight is what we call the light that comes from a torch. It's not the torch itself. And yeah, I made a mistake calling it a "torch". I meant flashlight. I'm just used to calling it a torch. I'm Australian.

One thing you can do is pull out your matter manipulator and hover it over blocks that you can't see to find ores.

I had figured that was it, but I'm a stickler for correct wording, and Torchlight would have been straight up incorrect. :p
