I really don't understand people with the mentality of the OP. I really don't.

Why do people today take so much care and concern about how OTHERS choose to play?

They must be doing that, because otherwise they are saying they have no self control and demand features change so they themselves cannot abuse them.

Otherwise, why do you care? This is something I see all over the web lately. It's utterly destroying the Diablo franchise at this point. People who think "self found" is the only way to play, and never shut the hell up about it until Blizzard is now pretty much enforcing their ideal style of play on everyone else via Bind on Account items.

Seriously people. Mind your own business. Play how you want to play. Someone else taking shortcuts doesn't affect you. If you bring up fair PvP I suggest you play with people who agree to your ideal playstyle. Rather than trying to force this crap onto everyone else.

Not to mention that a system such as you mention is pretty much impossible anyhow. There will always be seeds. Even if they removed them the game menus, people would make apps to find them.

People are going to share seeds. If you don't like it, don't partake in it.

Don't try to force your ideal playstyle onto others.

Don't complain to change a feature just because you may lack the self-control to not use it.

I dont see the harm in the current system. If people want to take their time in an exploration based game to look up which path they should take they are ruining their own fun or they arent really interested in an exploration based game. No harm done, if thats how they like to play so be it.

There are plenty of good reasons to look up coordinates for a certain type of planet. If you are into roleplaying and really want some to take place on a desert prison planet for example. Or if you've done the early game so many times you just want to skip ahead a bit and take some easier planets to avoid the early game hassle since you dont enjoy that as much.

Letting people make this choice for themselves seems to me like a good idea, i dont see how it would harm me if someone else looks up which planet is lv10 and has a pirate ship with a gun merchant.

That's obviously not true, because it is fair. Everyone can look up public coordinate lists, nobody has an advantage.
Unless someone chooses not to look anything up, then that person has a disadvantage. But since it's a personal choice that brings the disadvantage, there is nothing unfair about it.
This is not a competitive game. And suppose it was, and suppose coordinate sharing was banned, people could still remember coordinates from their other characters.

Fact is, the coordinate system is in place the way it is, enabling you to go where friends or maybe LPers have also been, even in single player.
It also allows you to find things(techs, buildings, merchants) without grinding fuel forever, if you really need it. That's lovely, and shouldn't be messed with because of jealousy.
Especially because this is not even a glitch that's being abused, it's just the system being used very efficiently.

Could be just a setting on a server, similar to Server-Side inventory.

    Same here.

Could be. But still, why is it needed? I can't think of any reason that would justify the added amount of work to include that.
"A minority of people would like it more" is not really a good argument when it comes to adding or removing game features.

I like the current system how it is, I also like the long grind up the tiers, its why I loved Terraria so much (the top tier was too quick to get to though), and why I love this game so much.

Having the ability to share good planet seeds with the community is essential if I become REALLY stuck and just can't progress (i.e not finding any gold for days, which hasn't happened yet, but boy it sure is rare).

After reading some of the replies and taking into account the split vote on the poll, I for one would love if the devs would eventually add an option for hosted servers to become randomized as apposed to the original universe seed, a mini true random universe for private servers, and the major original navigable universe using the coordinate system, I would be happy with this as it would allow for pure fairness in that server, as well as not changing the game universe for everyone else.

What do you guys think should this be an option?

If your friends can't be trusted to not look up coordinates when you've agreed to do so, then I think that's a bigger problem than anything in a computer game.

Conversely, if your friends wouldn't agree to not look things up because they prefer to play with a guide over blind exploration, I don't think the game needs to be changed to impose your preferred play style over theirs.

Now, I could see this being a problem if someone wants to make a public server with PvP elements and have it be blind exploration only, but even there, people who choose to explore normally rather than use a guide will just progress more slowly, and be no worse off than people who joined after the server was created or didn't play as many hours each day. Also, people who explore normally might find new good planets which they can exploit freely, whereas people who use guides could wind up in heavy competition for the same famous planets (especially on larger servers, which I imagine many public PvP servers would be).

I would rather have universes be generated based on inputted seeds OR be allowed to do pure random (and run similar to Terraria, you pick a character then a universe). This way we don't have everyone having the same planets at the same spots. I thought the point of the game was to be procedurally generated, that doesn't happen when everyone has the same things.

It fixes the issue of looking up coordinates. All in all I loved Terraria's saving system and how you could use a singleplayer world online.

If I remember correctly, the beta is supposed to have the same universe for everyone for testing & bug finding, but the final game will only have about 10-15 planets that are tied to the story, the rest will be random. I remember Tiy saying that Starbound could generate around 15 quintillion star systems, just limited by your HDD space for your universe size...

A lv20 gun isn't going to be enough to kill the boss.
You need better armour and the items required to spawn the boss.

simple solution would be to make the loot random.

No, I don't believe it was intended to share coordinates only with friends.
Sharing of "seeds" is widespread in procedurally generated games, minecraft, dwarf fortress, etc. Starbound just gives the seeds an in-game explanation and promotes sharing. Limiting sharing is impossible as long as the players can see and enter these seeds, and achieves nothing whatsoever for gameplay.. When it comes to competitive gaming, it's only up to the players to regulate themselves.

Exactly. If people want to play like that, let them. If you don't want to play like that, don't. Don't worry what others are doing.

I haven't tried it yet, but can't you just change each sector's seed in assets/celestial.config? Changing the value should make the sectors different, and unless I'm mistaken about how servers work, it should make it impossible for others to use coords from a different seed in your server. People who want to share coords still can, and people who want a completely new galaxy for their server can have that; everyone wins.

I think that best option would be to leave the single player universe same for everyone, If you want to, you can look up coordinates of nice planets and progress faster, but you dont have to. For the multiplayer there could be two server-side options added:
1-universe seed number, eg. if it were left 0, you would get the same universe as the one in single player, if you use some other seed, you will get a different planets/universe/coords etc.
2-option to set inventory and ship to server-side or to client(as it is now, when you connect to server you have the same ship(and items in it, as you had in SP on this character))

Setting server, to server-side inventory and random seed would stop people from sharing the coords(at least they wouldnt be able to use the ones that were posted somewhere on internet, someone playing on the same server could still tell the where to go, but i think it is fine, what is more those planets would have been already looted by the person that gave them the coords)

They mentioned previously that there was going to be a default universal seed. But also the ability to change it, so I assume the ability to have a custom universal seed on a server will be coming at some point here.
