    RAM: Random-Access Memory.

When they refers to memory they are referring to this memory. It's also known as "physical memory". They are not referring to the storage capacity of the unit.

I know but when your RAM is really too low, your computer start to "swap" and use your HDD to compensate. So your game will run "at the speed" of your HDD (that is generally the slowest element of the computer since it is the only mechanical one)

When you have the money for a SSD, you got money for a good enough computer to play Starbound without prob, and without SSD. ^^

Just for neophytes : a SSD wont fix a "too old" computer for any game. At least not in the good way, and with a smart usage of your money. (and a SSD wont last very long with a game constantly swapping on it)

I honestly wonder why anyone wouldn't want to use Steam.

I could understand that mentality when Steam first launched, and was really horrible, but now? What's wrong with it?

I don't get it either, i specially like it for the messenger.

Oh, not complaining, just commenting. But that's one of the reasons why i downloaded 16GB of ram, no disk swap slowdowns.

DRM (that is above all greatly discutable, but not here on this forum), intrusive system (friends system that is a big implied add), constant log on internet, even for solo games (and offline mode is not really resulted), and more...

And even now, Steam is far from bug-less and need a great work of optimization (I use Steam from the very first day, and a big part of is "better stability" is simply the better computers we got)

Let me correct you there- Games ALWAYS cache onto the harddrive. Of course more RAM will mean less of it, but you're not getting rid of it. Following your logic an SSD would be superfluous if you had 16GB RAM for most games - Which it most certainly is not.

    Friends list - Optional.
Constant Log on - Optional (Log in once every month or so and Offline mode works as intended - Even for Steamworks titles)

Well I read Offline Mode was fixed recently so that you never have to go Online as long as you don't mess with the Steam files and don't delete anything important. No idea if it's true. Nevertheless, I would feel better if SB could run entirely without Steam through its launcher .exe. Just in case Steam does decide to stop working when the internet is out. Some Steam games do this, but most do need Steam to be running at least in Offline Mode.

except you wouldn't, otherwise most americans would be bankrupt / in prison for pirating music.

Saying this makes me think that you never tried to turn your swap off. (yes it is possible, and yes games still works.)
You can also considere that your installation folder is already a "cache", even more with steam)

Sometimes when I try it, steam works offline during some hours/days... and suddendly ask me to connect for... something I can't understand. (and of course, without connection, no game available until connection...)

Early steam days, you could switch to offline mode without internet. Now you need internet to switch, and if you need to switch because you lost internet for some reason, you are just fucked up.

And responding with that makes me you don't actually know the first thing about the topic to begin with. Disabling the pagefile doesn't improve performance, nor does it disable caching as such. It serves as a ... well a cache for whenever something needs to be loaded into RAM for unpacking and processing.

There's a reason why games these days use larger archives over small fragmented files - It's more efficient and faster. But it also leaves a much larger fingerprint on your pagefile.

Steam keeps a temporary validation on your computer for offline mode - You've always need to authenticate every so often for offline mode to run. At least for as long as Valve has been in the business of selling third party titles that would otherwise have their original DRM present.

It isn't infallible - Your validation may become corrupted and then you will need to log on again. This is however an issue for a minority among all Steam users. And even then it is for the most part easily worked around bridging your cell phone or a similar wireless internet solution to your computer for a quick log on.

the point is that nobody has ever been smacked for this kind of stuff, except if they're like a superpower in the pirating world

wait erm.... what? isnt the name of your thread flawed by... step one? LOL

"I just thought some people would actually like to know... kinda just hit me right now

    JUST A HEADS UP!
You still have to use steam to launch it sadly!

    Steam One!
    Launch Steam..."

strange how you think this is classed as playing the game WITHOUT steam when launching steam is the first step????

it may be 3 am and i may have been out most of the night drinking for a friends birthday, but im sat here convincing myself this still is flawed logic even if i was as sobre as a priest
