How to make structures undestroyable?

I came across an Apex station that was undestroyable until I navigated and hit two switches. I was wondering how one could go about doing that in game? I'd like to build a base and then keep it from being destroyed (either accidentally or maliciously)

In the Apex base, once I hit the two switches, there was a special generator that I turned off and it had some sort of circuit board/tool thingy, but not sure how it was done.

    Any ideas?

its simply for for the fact that you need to work your way up to the top clearing floors and then turn of the circuit station at the top witch allows you to destroy blocks. you can make your building indestructible at all in this game unless its on MP server witch you might be able to do if they had the correct addon for the server

You can't make structures indestructible. Dungeons and other randomly generated buildings filled with enemies are indestructible because of a "shield generator" which is the thing you turned off. However, it is not possible to use that shield generator for your own buildings.

This only applies to unmodded Starbound though. With mods (or plugins for a server) you may be able to make an area, or perhaps even planet, indestructible (if they have the correct plugin).

Shield generators that you find in the existing dungeons are not currently constructible. I'm hoping that they will make it in soon enough, but right now the only way you can do so is via modding.

I like the idea that the generators are still usable by anyone, so you'd have to figure out some sort of clever wiring system to make it hard for anyone else to hack with your stuff until they figure it out. It would make traps, puzzles and platforming creations more feasible. This will really make user-generated content on servers shine (or PvP arenas, etc)

Thanks for the info everyone. Seems it just isn't possible to do at the moment, unless I find a mod somewhere. I am running the server locally (so me and my roommate can play together) and we wondered if it was possible so that we can protect what we built. Mostly in case of accidental destruction. For the foreseeable future, we'll just have to be careful about it... :D

The main problem with the existing generators is that they're linked to the dungeon they're made to protect, and the dungeon is defined by specific block locations in the world file.

It is possible (using admin commands) to turn on the generator's effect for a given Dungeon Id (can be found with another command), but all the blocks outside of a dungeon fall under a couple of other Ids, which protect very unusual groups of blocks.
I assume groups are: Player-placed blocks, Natural blocks, Player objects, Natural Objects and Air; but this is a big guess on my part and still needs actual testing. I'm making this assumption based on a server where you could place blocks in open areas, and break natural blocks, but you couldn't remove player-placed blocks. Maybe you could turn on protection for all of them?

    /admin
    /settileprotection 65532 true
    /settileprotection 65535 true

Will make an entire planet or ship protected. First is player blocks and objects, second is natural/game spawned.

The numbers seem random, but they're one of the highest and the highest value of an unsigned short, which is a variable type.

I'm sure you could script the generator to work.

Quick question, does this prevent you from placing blocks too? If not, it could easily make the situation worse where you could easily trap yourself on the planet.

If you are in admin mode you can teleport away regardless of present background.
