How to fix character wipes temporarily.

Simply go to Properties/Updates for the Steam page of Starbound and disable automatic updates.
Now you have control of when the character gets wiped:
if you don't want it wiped, keep playing the old version. If you are ready for a wipe, update manually.

Right now I'm playing the pre-patch version (irritated koala) with a damage scaling fix (x/2 damage multiplier for every 5 levels of difference between armor/weapon ap/monster lvl, both up and down), and fixed ore distributions (so, far I switched platinum and titanium, not yet sure of titanium is still too rare.)
Working very well.
Especially the damage scaling fix.

It is a dumb move and it will definitely pull this game down a lot. Better for them to think about the whole system before they release a game.

 

It's one thing to be upset about character wipes. I can understand that. But character wipes are necessary, there's not really a way they can have a meaningful beta test without wiping things.

 

That is what they are doing. The game is not released yet, it is still in development. It is in beta, and is acquires through Steam's early access program. On Steam the game is listed as a beta, and Steam early access mentions that the games are under development. The point is, there should be no reason for you ignorance.

Why are there so many threads complaining about things like this, when it's been previously addressed? Until the full game is released, expect to lose your characters. If you don't like it, wait until beta is over. Or do like the OP suggests if you HAVE to play it. Beta is for testing, so it's better to update, but it's probably better to not update if it's going to lead to complaints like those.

Wow! That's a really good way to wreck one of the major purposes of releasing this Beta early. So now instead of people playing the current version of the game, we can expect complaints, bug-reports, balance issues, etc from a prior version which may well have been fixed in a more recent patch! I bet the devs will really enjoy wondering if a particular bug report is happening currently, or if the reporter has just ignored the testing side, and stuck with an old version!

 

Because it's totally not selling, and none of my friends or guild are playing...

 

All of the fucking idiots modding the old versions of the game JUST so they can keep their precious little saves: please stop. You are completely defeating the purpose of the beta. You are hindering the progress of development. You wanna bitch and moan about wanting the game in a state where they don't have to do more resets? THEN HELP US TEST AND BUG REPORT.

You people don't deserve to beta test this game. You don't deserve to beta test ANY game if this is how you treat the process.

 

whats the point of playing characters from previous versions?

a) It's not representative of what the final game will be like
b) any bugs you encounter may have already been fixed and you don't know it yet, so if you report them as bugs the devs have that extra work to do sorting through what they've already done, thus delaying the final product.
c) you won't be able to play with people who have updated on multiplayer servers
