brand new to this game. played a half-hour or so, then spent several minutes trying to figure out how to exit the game, to no avail <sigh> Task Manager works, but seems a bit severe... Is everything in the game this dense?? plain old Win 10, using steam.

Open up the menu. See that icon of the big red circle with a slash through it on the far right of the icons? Click that.
Click escape. That brings up the menu. then as shneekeythelost said, the big red circle with a slash through it will get you to the exit screen. Please be advised that the game only saves at night, so to avoid losing any information you should only quit in the mornings after waking up. -You will start the day at 6:00 am on the day you exit next time you load.
I use pc and it is the letter E to bring up you inventory and all the tabs for collection, skills, etc. One of the tabs is a red circle with a slash, this is to exit the game.
Technically it is... WHen you first start playing the very first time, when you wake up your bed it has a graphic on the left side of the screen telling you that WASD are the movement keys and Esc brings up the menu.
