I just thought about to release our server to public, but i have one question about it for now.

i remember an old stream from bartwe, where he tried some MP.
after a while the server starteg lagging a lot.
i dont know if there is something different now, but i dont want to risk it.

so, how many players are a good number? 20? 100? even more?

the server is in germany from hetzner:

    Intel® Core™ i7-4770
    Quad-Core Haswell
    inkl. Hyper-Threading-Technologie

    • RAM 32 GB DDR3 RAM
    • HDD 2 x 240 GB SATA 6 Gb/s SSD
      (Software-RAID 1)
    • Connection 1 GBit/s-Port
    • Bandwith garantiert 200 MBit/s

To play without lag, the general rule is 1 player per core (so 8 for an i7). Starbound is a CPU fiend for whatever reason. It will take everything it can get. That being said, pile more players on until the lag becomes uncomfortable. Those specs are practically identical to the specs on our server, except for 32 instead of 24gb RAM. We run 30-50 online usually WITH major lag. I haven't seen the RAM use climb above 11GB... usually running between 4-8. SSDs are amazing. You can do world backups in the blink of an eye.... which you'll need to do because of the world reset bug that is still going strong.

I've heard that starbound server on windows runs a fair bit better than linux, which is very unusual... its always the other way around. I guess they haven't put effort into linux support yet. Hopefully we'll get some major server work in the coming patches, but I'm done holding my breath.

Ive been trying to run a server with 4 people on a i-7 first gen and even with 1 person on lan Im receiving lag, so I got no idea what it takes to get a lag free server. Even with the 4 people the server doesnt top 10% cpu usage

You're hitting some other resource bottleneck first. If its linux, you can look do command 'ps aux' and look at the stats for the process. On windows, you can poke around in task manager performance tab. Whatever resource is almost completely taken... that would your problem. It could be RAM, disk, or bandwidth... but bandwidth should not be a problem on LAN. The linux version still has a bad memory leak somehow, so hitting 8GB of RAM use probably isn't unusual. It's kindof hard to judge without getting a more complete picture like what the OP posted. In OP's case, CPU will be the first thing to run out.

    Using Ubuntu12.04 and 12GB Ram.
Try to calculate 6-8% of CPU for a player. Starting from 10 or 12+ players you will see some big and long lags.
Starbound MP is just totally a mess, whats very sad...

that is huge man. I can run a minecraft server on my laptop and play on it as well with 5 others connected without lag (maybe a bit internet lag).
    my specs: i3-350m, 8gb ddr3 1066mhz, 320gb hdd (i think it is sata2). 130-300mbps connection to modem and 8.8mb down & 0.8mb up.
Starbound should get better optimized for old hardware, I play 40-60 fps on my laptop, but on a 1 gen older laptop it lags. (and minecraft runs fine on that old piece of crap)
