How frequent are meteors landing?

Excited to check out the new content with a few of my friends, we landed on a planet and started to make our home. About an hour into it, a gigantic meteor plummeted into our building and wiped an entire half of it out (including destroying the materials/possessions) and destroying a large portion of the land around it.

It was amazing and funny, kind of a "I'M SO DONE WITH THIS GAME" way but a bit more humorous.

ANYWAY, how often does this happen and are there certain things that trigger it to happen more frequently on some planets rather than others? It's got us a bit spooked and hesitant to build another base seeing as it whiped it out. :(

Holy crap, I want to see that. I guess you should consider underground bases. xD

It was pretty epic, it just came plummeting down and destroyed everything in it's path. We were building INSIDE of our fort at the time and we just saw it come down and wipe it out.

What? That happens now? That thought really makes me not want to build on a planet at all... Might just be a lot easier to install a ship enlarging mod and live like a space nomad...

  5. Try building with higher tier materials and report your findings! I'm interested in this, and I'm sure a bunch of others are too!

We only had Small Stone Brick that we had plundered from surrounding buildings for what we were making the fort out of.

  7. I started a new world and within 5 minutes was pelted by small meteor showers that were destroying the terrain all around me. Once it stopped another 5 minutes in it started again and the destruction continued.

I have not seen a lage meteor drop yet, but I can only imagine no one is safe from it's destruction.

I just want to know how frequent it is, cus one every now and then is whatever, but if it's bugged and has some abnormal timer where every hour it happens or something, that's gonna bite.

Is there an asteroid field in that system?

Nope, it's by itself. Just one jungle planet.

  11. My planet didn't have an asteroid field either.

I played for more than 2 hours and didnt see a single meteor... so its probably just your good/bad luck. Condolences to you if you were building an important project and it tore your base in half

Wow... well I don't find that right at all... I could understand that if there was an asteroid field, but any planet at any time?

I think it should also be reserved for hostile planets... like magma, volcanic and moons... sounds weird that meteors would just start falling and destroying a tranquil jungle only after you land on it :/

I've only seen a couple meteor showers, none of them enough to cause destruction. They basically amounted to a pretty lightshow.

Currently on a Threat 1 Forest World.

Meteors don't confirm the biome type of a planet before setting course for it. =)

And if large / destructive meteors are super rare, they aren't much of a game feature.
If they are so rare that nobody "plans" for them (like on our world), they might as well not exist. Just once in a while they completely wipe out a player's possessions.

Anything that is supposed to be a game feature should at most be "uncommon". If it's "super rare" it's impossible to balance.

So there is even less reason now to buid planet bases.
Did they fix farms at least? So they could grow when you far away.

I get that, but I hate the idea of anything I build getting destroyed like that... and what Dot said:
2 terrain destroying meteor showers in 10 minutes? That doesn't sound too great... not at all... so I hope that that's just a product of a new feature that will be balanced out better so I don't have as much fear of my stuff getting destroyed...

I've had more than 2 on my world, they happen about every 10 minutes. I was even inside a generated metal building and they blew through that and destroyed me.

  19. Yep, way to close together imo. Until it get rebalanced I don't think I'll be building anything too important, above ground anyways. The way I see it they probably made them common to test the feature out.

Well, it is a brand new feature. Did you seriously expect balance? =)

In fact, it's very likely they increased the occurrence so they could test the new feature more easily.

I'd be more curious about what kind / thickness of Asteroid Shield you need for protecting your base...
Does an asteroid "impact" when it hits the first pixel?
Then layered but thin lines would work...
