How Does Wiring Work

I would have thought this has been asked before, but a search returns little of value.

How do you wire up items? I have control panels and doors and 3 spools of wire. But for the love of Kleux, I can't figure out how to interact with any of it.

For that matter, how do you get more wire? I'm pretty sure I found mine somewhere, but it can't be replicated in 3D printer, which suggests it's craftable.

  2. I have a feeling it's not in game at the moment.

No, I think it may be. Right after I asked the question, I looked carefully in the robotic crafting table and found an entry for a wiring tool!! Never noticed that before! Requires a shizz-load of gold, steel, and iron, and 20 titanium panels. Not sure I've ever seen one of those. Not craftable that I can see. Is it something that has to be scavenged?

It is. And it works. There's not a lot to wire together yet, so far, doors and buttons, haven't found anything else.
When you unlock the recipe, you have access to planets on which you can find titanium. One bar makes 3 panels (on the other crafting station)

Also, you don't need Wire (the item) to use it, the tool makes its own wires.

Sweet! Thank you for that. I had all the materials I needed to make one. Expensive little bugger, though. So it appears that controllers have red connection points, and controllable items have purple. I'm going to experiment with what I can do with this now!!!

actually, the purple and red dot means "input" and "output" respectively. stuff connected by theire red dot to something will send an "activation" signal when interacted with while things wired to theire purple dot will "activate" when receiving an external signal.

so per example, a level with a red dot will be wired from there to a door's purple dot. push lever, red dot sends output signal to the doors input purple dot.

Some have both. A door for example can be connected to another door to control it as well (it will have the opposite state, though).

Haha, so check this out. This is either a bug, or I'm just a wiring n00b:

When I wire the doors (as below), the bottom right door opens automatically. Then, when I go activate the console, the bottom right door closes, the upper left door opens, and the console DISAPPEARS!! Activating it again reverses the effect.

That console does that even if it isn't wired. I'm like, 68% sure it isn't supposed to disappear :p

Wiring it like THIS (below) causes both doors to open and close as expected, and the console still disappears :)

A door in 'closed' state outputs 'on' which opens the next connected door. I'd think it would be reversed (which would, incidentally, make placing a trap door in front of a door much more fun). But not a huge problem.

Careful with wiring though guys! You can wire a door's input to it's output, causing it to spaz out, opening and closing very rapidly whilst making an ungodly racket.

Not seeing a problem here. :p

While we're on the topic of wiring. Is it possible to have a door respond to more than one switch? I can't seem to get it to, or I'm not wiring things to the correct thing.

Yes. I just tested it, though it's a little wonky. See pic below. A convoluted mess, I know, but both outdoor fingerprint scanners are attached to both doors, AND I've attached a third controller (computer) to the door on the right as a third input, but it would not allow me to connect the same computer to the top door on the left. Oddly, I was allowed to connect it to the BOTTOM door on the left. So there may be a limit of 3 controllers per device controlled? Not totally tested, but it seems a plausible explanation.

To make it work, make sure you are standing physically close to each connection point when you click. The line is always red, unlike the matter manipulator, and it won't work from much of a distance. To connect those far doors I had to click the connector on the source controller, then WALK across the room to the door, and click the connector again on the purple circle on the door.

That pictures is indeed quite the convoluted mess. I know that you have to actually be close enough to link an object to another. But I just can't get it to work.

For example, what I want to do is have a knight statue that opens a hidden glitch door which leads downstairs to the science lab. The science lab door is then opened with a hand scanner. What I would like to happen is when that hand scanner is used, the trap door then closes again. But I can't seem to figure out how to get it to work in such a manner.

You'll need some logic gates (either not in yet or just inaccessible? I think.)

Ugh, alright thanks. At least now I can stop slamming my head into my table.

Probably so, PLUS, there appears to be a bug. Using my convoluted mess as an example, if I open both doors by using the hand scanner on the left side of the building, I CANNOT close them again by using the hand scanner on the RIGHT side of the building. I HAVE TO use the one of the left side to close them again. This means that while I can open 2 doors with the same switch, I can't CLOSE either of the doors with a different switch.

If I understood your glitch statue example correctly, it's not NOT working because you did something wrong, it's not working because you can't open your trapdoor with one switch and close it with another. This means your glitch trapdoor is also a glitched trapdoor :) Probably should be addressed and fixed by devs. Hopefully they read these forums. Gawd how I would love to see a bug tracker implemented.
